I'm Nobody

We knew Dolly Parton was a good songwriter, but we didn’t expect to be as moved as we were with “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”. It’s the song we needed to hear, hold and sing right about now. 

Here’s how it came to be: Early in her career, Dolly spent seven years as the co-host of the PorterWagoner Show. Although a successful team, their  relationship became increasingly volatile as her popularity rose and eventually eclipsed Wagoner's. Dolly’s progressive decision to break their creative partnership and branch out on her own did not sit well with Porter. Arguing late into the night, she left their last meeting in tears. As she drove home in the pouring rain near dawn, Dolly was distraught, still crying and re-evaluating her career decision. Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds seemed to part before her as the sun rose. The phrase "I can see the light of a clear blue morning" popped into her head and she wrote the rest of the song on that drive, firmly believing her future was full of new possibilities. Dolly’s song of hope and resilience keeps us looking to that horizon, too. #DollyParton

During my final semester in college, I was invited to attend a church service just outside of Wooster, Ohio – my first experience with what is now my chosen faith, Unitarian Universalism. It is also the smallest worship service I’ve ever attended, both then and now. Sitting in a circle in a barn, twelve congregants gave their full attention to a soft-spoken layperson, who gave a thoughtful meditation entitled “Cherish Your Doubts,” inspired by a writing by Robert T. Weston.

Twenty years later, I remembered how powerful that experience was. Would it be possible, I wondered, for a gospel choir to praise not only the awesome power of faith, but also the spiritual journey of doubt?

In 1568, during a period of intense religious violence in Europe, King John Sigismund III of Hungary issued a decree granting unprecedented religious freedom to his country’s people. Imagine a group of women spreading the news to everyone in their village, quoting from this historic decree, the Edict of Torda. Sung in Hungarian and crafted in the style of Eastern European folk music, "Jó!" — meaning “it’s all good!” — carries a joyful message of tolerance that is still as relevant as ever.

"Preachers shall propagate the Gospel in all places, according to their own understanding, and if the community is willing to accept, that's all well and good; if not, no one is allowed to press them to adopt it in spite of their not being reassured in their heart; but they may keep a preacher whose teachings they like.  And no one...may persecute them for this; no one is to be denounced or disparaged at on account of religion...  For faith is the gift of God, which comes from listening — listening to the words of God."

Alvez T. Barkoskie IV is a native of St. Augustine, FL and recently completed his Master of Music degree in Composition with a second concentration in Organ Performance at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied composition with Donald Grantham, Yevgeniy Sharlat and Dan Welcher, and organ with Gerre and Judith Hancock. His composition "Pedals, Pipes and Percussion," was recently broadcasted on the Nationally Syndicated Program "Pipedreams," hosted by Michael Barone. In Fall 2012, he will attend The University of Oklahoma on a full tuition Graduate Assistantship to study for his Master of Music degree in Organ Performance.

Musical activities in the Austin area include accompanying vocalists, teaching piano, subbing at local churches and serving as Organ and Church Music Intern at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church. At St. Louis he plays organ for several masses; directs “Magnificat,” an all female choir; sings in the Sanctuary choir; sings, accompanies and co-directs the all male, compline choir and plays in the handbell choir.

In May of 2009, Barkoskie graduated, with honors, from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance as well as in Theory and Composition. There he studied composition with Sydney Hodkinson and Manuel de Murga and studied organ and harpsichord with Boyd Jones. He also studied piano with Michael Rickman.

Upon completion of his first year at Stetson he was named a 2004-2005 Outstanding Freshmen in the School of Music. In the spring of 2007 he was accepted into the National Music Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda and in the spring of 2009 his choral composition “Far in the distance the majestic mountain sighs” received an Award of Excellence from the Stetson University Touchstone 2009 Literary Journal.
