my cover of oh comely by neutral milk hotel! 

i've loved this song and sung it all the time since i was a teenager first figuring out trans stuff. i recorded myself singing and playing piano for it multiple times! 

when i came out in my early 20s, one of my goals was to one day record a version of it that was in my deeper voice after starting hormone treatment. i tried a couple times in the years since, but i just couldn't make it work the way i wanted it to.

then last week i chucked the instrumental for this together and recorded it on my laptop with a tiger blanket over the laptop and my head. it was a bastard to mix so by the time i felt done with it i needed to take a couple days away from it so i could come back and fix anything i needed to.

i listened to the full song for the first time yesterday while walking to the bus and i was thrilled!!! this is exactly what i wanted it to be, and exactly what i've always felt it needed to be. it's intimate and imperfect and it has my heart in it, in a way that i've never been able to feel before.

i feel like i've achieved that goal that little baby me had, even before i actively made the decision to aim for it, way back when i first discovered both neutral milk hotel and the existence of transsexuality and transgender people. it means a lot to me that i've been able to reach this point - something i've loved and thought about and worked on for years in my head and my heart has finally reached the world. it's not all that much to listen to, but it's important to me. :)
