Dr. Jemima Pierre is a Black Agenda Report contributing editor and a Professor of Global Race in the Institute of Race, Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice (GRSJ) at the University of British Columbia. She joins us from Vancouver to discuss the October 2nd United Nations Security Council vote which approved yet another occupation of Haiti which will begin on October 9. There were 2 abstentions, from Russia and China, while the 13 other nations all voted yes. The Security Council voted to approve, but the occupation is not a UN mission. Dr. Pierre will explain the implications of this arrangement.

Aaron Bushnell's Death Can't Rightly Be Called An Act Of Suicide

Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Wayne State University. She is the author of Black Scare Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States.  She joins us from Detroit to discuss this political moment as Donald Trump again takes office. How does he differ from other presidents? How is he the same? Are we living under fascism, and what does that mean? Dr. Burden-Stelly provides analysis.

This was recorded in a converted Chicken Coop far from the main highway, in temperatures of over 100 degrees, with birds crowing from the rooftop, a giant black dog throwing its body against the door, and the sounds of a chainsaw from somewhere off in the distance. The engineer, Bob Hall, had to fend off the dog (something between a St. Bernard and a Mastodon), go outside, and climb the roof with a mic stand to ward off the black birds. The guy with the chainsaw, you could see him sometimes. All of Anton's fast food ice cream treats melted.  

A live set-up, Johnathon Crawdaddy Crawford pretty much laid down the beat on this one, providing lots of space for Anton and me to romp around instrumentally and lyrically. Craw had a couple of crates of machine parts, brake drums, plastic saxophones, hair brushes, and what-not, and was generally poised to create a virtual flying circus given a nod and a wink. Subsequently during out-takes we often sound like a combo of Einsterzende Neubauten and Captain Beefheart, only Anton there to veto the pulling out of the plumbing and electrical fixtures and other things this building needed in order to retain its drunken posture.

The song itself I cobbled together from whatever diet of spiritual trap doors I happened to find at one time or another, combined with concrete images from where I grew up, replete with the sounds of sirens and mattress springs, the scraping sound of matches being struck, dice against the wall, and what-have-you. I tried to stay out of the way of it like it were a headless horseman bearing down on me, which seemed to grow on its own out of a crack in the pavement.
