In 1973 she started having hallucinations while praying and felt convinced she was damned and the devil was inside her.

Neither doctors nor priests could handle the behaviour that followed.

Anneliese reportedly licked her own urine from the floor, stripped naked, ate insects and coal.

She also began avoiding religious items, and as priests thought she was showing signs of being 'possessed by demons' they performed an exorcism after requests from her parents.

Over a 10 month period, she went on to have 67 hour long exorcism sessions where clergymen tried to extract the six demons they believed were inside her body.

They were believed to have chained her up and held her during these exorcisms, and after her death in 1976 an autopsy showed fractured teeth, bruised limbs and black eyes.

In 1978, the priests and Anneliese's parents were found guilty of negligent homicide, were fined and given prison sentences.
