I have become irritated lately in always being tied to my computer in the studio. I recently bought a Zoom R24 as a way to just work with my machines without the computer. I looked at some Tascam units, but this recorder does so much, is portable, has built-in mics, is a sampler/sequencer, has a drum machine, is a USB audio interface, etc. Another big plus is it is small and fits on my workstation surface very well.

 I am finding it very freeing to just have a multi-track recorder powered-on in a few seconds and getting to business. There has been a large learning curve, but I'm figuring things out ;) I have nuked many tracks without meaning to, but that's in the learning process.

This is my first attempt to do a sound design on the Zoom R24, including doing the mastering on the unit. All the sounds and effects you hear are from the Korg Minilogue XD, which is a wonderful little synth.

If you get this far reading, please let me know if this sounds anywhere near OK :)

Zoom R24  One (First Recording - No DAW)

This is my second recording using the Zoom R24, and in my quest to get back to basic recording. I did this piece last night in about two hours, and I'm so impressed with how easy it is to stay focused on a project, just using the hardware in front of me!!!

The R24 has a Swap function, so I can leave the synth connected to paired inputs 1 and 2. You can then "Swap" the tracks by moving them to another paired set of inputs, including all attributes related to them. The R24 can record eight tracks simultaneously, so I'll be moving towards a fuller setup with multiple units recording together. For now, I'm just learning and enjoying the freedom this gives me ;)

As in the first piece I put up, all sounds and effects are from the Korg Minilogue XD. I think I'm going to explore recording using the Korg Wavestate next, should be yummy!!!

This is my third attempt at DAWless recording using the Zoom R24. The freedom this is giving me is inspiring, and the speed of the workflow is excellent.

Staying The Course

This is a new sound design. All sounds are done using the DSI Pro 2, which is an amazing synth. The recording was done using the Zoom R24 multi-track recorder and I mastered using the R24 as well ( something I'm still learning about). I think I'll remix in Izotope Ozone 9 to see if I can get a better mix that way, but wanted to put up the original just done on the Pro 2 and R24.

This is my second experiment of doing a track just using the Yamaha MX49. I introduced some noise into the mix somehow, but everything you hear is just the Yamaha with compression added during the rendering in Ableton Live 9.

Slow Spin

This is the first track I did using the Roland System-1m. This is a great sounding synth and I plan to do all kinds of interconnects with it across some of my other synths. I used the Roland SH-201 as a midi controller for this module and used an arp from the 201.

Roland System - 1m First

This is a new sound design in the Atmospheric Series. I was ignoring my wonderful Minilogue for too long, so I've started using it again. Everything you hear is the Minilogue, with effects provided by the Eventide H9 Max pedal with compression done at the end of the chain.

Stumble (Korg Minilogue)

I was very fortunate to actually get one of these beautiful analog synths this week!!!!! Some are saying they have to wait until October due to demands, so the early bird does get the "Moog" ;)

This piece tries to show some of the sounds that can be generated from this semi-modular beauty. If you aren't aware of what this really is, do some research and you'll see that this is a keeper and is flashing me back to the late 70s and early 80s ;) The real spring reverb is wonderful and sounds amazing. I used my new DigiTech Obscura Altered Delay for some repeats and vibe.

Moog Grandmother - Second Encounter

I got a Behringer Deepmind 6 for my birthday and have just started to use it. As I often do, I'm creating some tracks just using this new synth. Everything you hear is done on the Deepmind 6 and I did some mild compression in Ableton Live, that's it. I'll be doing some ambient tracks and some drifting tracks as well. I love this synth and want to do many deep dives with the Deepmind ;)

Droid Rock 1 V.2

I ordered my Poly D on 3/23/20. I finally received it on 5/23/20. I was able to spend a few hours with it yesterday and created a sound design to explore more of the ambient side of this synth. I did use a DigiTech Obscura and a DigiTech Polara to add echo and reverb to the sounds, and also used the Roland Chorus that is standard with the Poly D. There is no compression or mastering done, this was just run through an Audient iD14 into Ableton Live 10. I did a portable setup and introduced noise into the mix, but oh well ;)

I want to do more of a Berlin/Techno piece next, but so far I'm very impressed with this amazing synth and now after I stupidly sold my earlier two minimoogs, I have a mini minimoog ;)

Behringer Poly D - First Encounter (Sound Test)

This is my second sound design using the Korg Wavestate wavetable synthesizer. This thing is a sound designer's dream, be assured!

I'll do a more peaceful and spacial design next, but this Motions piece was fun and I think it sounds pretty good. All sounds are from the Wavestate and I used Ozone 8 to do some compression on the mastering.

TakeOut Music -Electronic Sound Designs to Take You Out, best listened to with good headphones or earbuds.

TakeOut Music is the result of 35 years of experimenting with sound (including lots of listening ;) ). It started in San Francisco in the 70s, including recording loads of electronic music, playing live with a notorious punk band (really miss the Octave Cat/RE-201/Flanger combo), and being a member of several experimental electronic bands. During a period of "musicus interruptus", I completed an EE degree and got a day job in Silicon Valley for 20 years and my energies went to product designs and the music creations stopped.

In a state of burnout in 2002, I filled my basement with classic analog gear and got back to what I love and probably increased my lifespan significantly. I would build live songs by programing each synth/device, running them all through a huge mixing console, and then recording onto a DAT drive (still have 17 120-DAT tapes to go through to hear all the music made in this period). In a quest for a peaceful environment, left the large house in the Boulder suburbs to live in the amazing Rocky Mountains. My huge collection of vintage analog gear had to be scaled down, and that made a lot of EBayers very happy.

This new collection of music here on SoundCloud is a result of the redesigned studio using computer-based software tools. I didn't totally lose my mind, my beloved Korg Radias, DSI Pro 2, Wavestation EX, Moog Sub 37, Korg MS-20 mini, Eventide H9 Max, TC Electronics M-350, Arturia Beatstep Pro, Arturia Microbrute, Arturia Keystep, Arturia Drumbrute, Yamaha MX49, Korg Minilogue, Roland SH-201, Roland System-1m, Novation MiniNova, and Alesis SR18 populate my new space as well as all the MANY virtuals and emulations, etc. TakeOut Music is a concept I had in the 1970s, for "Music To Take You Out'. It relates to various states of consciousness, energy, vibration, and frequency. I mainly define the categories as: Atmospherics, Holding Patterns, and Motions.

My wish is that these synthetic sound designs bring enjoyment to others!! This is the first time I've felt compelled to share these with others and hope they are taken with the love in which they were created.
