OCTVS: It was Jeremy (aka JPLS) who turned me onto the RAZOR plug-in from Native Instruments which, when running thru the different patches on a channel strip with some heavy side chain going on, i came across the "Broken Jetpack" sound and it was instant. It sounded like a rave siren, a call to arms sort of thing with peaks and lows. So yeah, sometimes the hook/music comes before I've worked out what I want to do with the drums or bassline. At the time I was starting to play the classic "Doppelwhipper" by Gabriel Ananda in my sets again and it had this sort of "pimp" or "bling" thing going on that I'd always loved so that helped shape my ideas about the kind of vibe and groove OCTVS should have. The reaction to the record was interesting as quite a few DJs reacted more positively to the mellower b-side, "Debris." But I like to evoke strong reactions with my music or DJ sets so I was nevertheless happy with this release and it certainly rocked the club:-)

Debris: Coming from a dub background during my early acid jazz/hip-hop days in Washington, DC, I'd always wanted to do something in that vein production-wise; something King Tubby or On-U Sound mixed with my long-time love of what Mark and Moritz from Basic Channel were doing with their Rhythm & Sound project. This is me just having fun in the studio with effects and getting outside my comfort zone a bit by doing something aimed straight at the mellower DJs and dancefloors . The feedback was far more positive than I'd imagined so guess I'll have to explore more of that territory with future singles. - Dubfire

Dubfire - OCTVS

Dustin Zahn makes his album debut in March 2014 with the release of Monoliths on Adam Beyer's Drumcode label. Gestating over a period of a four years during break from releasing original solo material, Monoliths sees the Minneapolis native capturing the full breadth of his production style in the long-player format for the first time. Having become a mainstay of the Drumcode line-ups for their Berghain residency and beyond, the challenge was set for the Berlin-based Zahn to build upon the reputation he has established in the past decade-and-a-half since he first arrived on the scene, during which time he has also given a platform to artists such as DVS1, Minilogue, Psyk and Truncate via his Enemy Records imprint. 
"Adam Beyer has supported me since day one and almost all of my output has found its' way into his sets since the beginning. Aside from being a champion of my music, he has also become a good friend and has been a big help to me when times were tough. Drumcode was a major influence on me when I first started getting into techno. Getting the opportunity to do an album for an inspirational label with a massive following made choosing them an easy decision." 
The bracing retro-futurist synths of 1984 tease what's to follow: epic, ambitious, raw real techno - as imperious as the album title implies and impeccably designed for the tallest speaker stacks. When the record is at its most dancefloor-focused each cut is an amalgamation of classic techno elements that encapsulate the genre at its most uncompromising, though Zahn's skill as a producer shines through in his ability to demonstrate the range contained within this aesthetic. Whilst embodying the genre's purity of purpose, Monoliths is still able to find and explore different sonic palettes. 
"The overall tone is noticeably a bit more industrial and colder since it was written over a brutal winter in Berlin. It also marks my return to a heavy emphasis on hardware for a more raw sound. A lot of producers try to show their range on albums by writing music that isn't necessarily their strong point. In result, you get a lot of albums with mediocre 'listening' tracks and a couple of token 'club bangers' that should have just been destined for an EP anyway. I decided that I was going to focus on my strengths and write a full-on techno album that sums up my career so far."

02. Dustin Zahn - District of Light - Drumcode

<p>Sweden&#8217;s influence on modern Techno can never be overrated. Over the past twenty years the ever growing band of dedicated artists emerging from the country have each played a huge part in the global growth and development of the sound. Stockholm&#8217;s Joel Mull is one of the key and original members of the country&#8217;s musical militia. Known for his dynamic and often marathon DJ sets and his impressive releases for the likes of Music Man, Cocoon, Kanzleramt and Drumcode, the DJ/Producer is steeped in Techno history. Today though he again proves his eyes, and ears, are looking firmly to future with his latest work and debut release for Nicole Moudaber&#8217;s MOOD imprint. </p>

<p>The Three track Wind It Up EP again highlights Joel&#8217;s love and skill for crafting atmospheric and harmonic techno. The Waiting&#8217;s powerful kick drum is governed by its beautifully intergalactic breakdown, before Wind It Up&#8217;s marching groove is bathed in swirling synths. The EP is closed by the industrial roller Geodesi, with its ethereal guitar riff.</p>

More commonly known by his stage name Dubfire, Ali Shirazinia is an Iranian American house and techno DJ and producer who, as well as running his own record label SCI+TEC, maintains a unique position at the top of the electronic music industry. With over two decades of experience, an unrelenting work ethic and a determination to innovate, evolve, and entertain thousands, Dubfire's story is one that inspires and surprises in equal measure. 

Here, he sits down with BE-AT.TV presenter Marcus Barnes to delve deep beneath the surface of his past and discuss the records that changed his life.

Shipwrecked Records 01: Dubfire (BE-AT.TV)

Having laid strong musical foundations with early releases on Supdub, including debut album ‘Breakthrough’, Rostock’s Carlo Ruetz enjoyed another career defining moment with the 2014 release of ‘Controlled By Robots’. A label debut that lead to his inclusion as one of the new generation of Richie Hawtin’s Minus artists. 

Fast forward to 2016 and Carlo has spread the love further, featuring his music on the likes of KD Raw, Deeperfect, Trapez and most recently Elevate. He closes out the year with his SCI+TEC debut, the impressive double-header of Instinct / Distorted Perception. 

The disconcerting darkness of Instinct with it’s purring bassline and waves of echoing synth create an electrically charged calm-before-the-storm atmosphere. Its tempestuous twin, Distorted Perception, lulls us with its initial hypnotic beats, before finishing with a flourish of metallic strikes that stir the senses.

Keys in the ignition, no turning back: Dubfire and Miss Kittin are about to take us on another late night road trip. And this time there are two very special ways to ‘Ride’…

Plotting new routes from where they last dropped us off in 2014 with ‘Exit’, and presented in Miss Kittin’s own artwork, the two long term friends and musical kindred spirits cover a side each with two version journeys you’ll never forget.

Kittin jumps straight on the autobahn in a tank-shaped techno hummer. Thumping the tarmac down with every gas-guzzling kickdrum, lights blur and trace and the mission gathers momentum as we cruise almost majestically into a brighter unknown.

Dubfire brings us back home via the trusty widescreen house plains. Roads running parallel with the grand, emotional highways he once took as Deep Dish; the vanishing point is far on the horizon where a vast sky of twinkling stars opens up with a feeling you could ride for days on end.

Unhurried, restrained and timelessly crisp and futuristic: trips like this don’t come about very often… The keys are in the ignition, care to take a ‘Ride?’
