LSE Director, Minouche Shafik (MSc Economics 1986) and Ruth will take part in a fireside chat about the role of LSE and how it can shape the world in turbulent times of economic uncertainty and social transformations. Their discussion will also touch on the importance of diversity, lifelong learning and Ruth’s own career path from her time as an MSc student at LSE, to her current leadership role. Following this Minouche will be in conversation with Martin where they discuss his time at LSE (where he was elected General Secretary of the Students' Union) and his ongoing relationship with the School (he serves as a Governor) and the impact that has had on his hugely successful career in a number of different industries. Ruth Porat is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Alphabet and Google. Ruth joined Google as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in May 2015 and has also held the same title at Alphabet since it was created in October 2015. Prior to joining Alphabet, Ruth was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Morgan Stanley. At Morgan Stanley, Ruth held roles that included Vice Chairman of Investment Banking, Co-Head of Technology Investment Banking and Global Head of the Financial Institutions Group. Ruth is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Aspen Institute Economic Strategy Group and the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. Ruth holds a BA from Stanford University, an MSc from London School of Economics and Political Science and an MBA from the Wharton School. Minouche Shafik is Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to this she was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England. An economist by training, Dame Minouche Shafik has spent most of her career straddling the worlds of public policy and academia. After completing her BSc in economics and politics at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, she took an MSc in economics at LSE before completing a DPhil in economics at St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford.

The standard route to success in modern life goes as follows: work hard in high school, score high on your SAT, get into a good college, do well in your classes, get a good job. 

For some people, that path works, but for a lot of people, it leaves them disengaged and frustrated because it doesn't actually lead to a life of fulfillment. 

My guest today has spent his academic career studying individuals who have bucked the standard formula for achievement and found success on their own terms. His name is Todd Rose. He's a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the co-author of the book "Dark Horse: Achieving Success Through the Pursuit of Fulfillment." We begin our conversation discussing what Todd calls the "Standardization Covenant," including how it developed to serve institutions rather than individuals and why following the standard path often leads to frustration. Todd then explains his idea of an alternative "Dark Horse Covenant" and what it looks like theoretically and in the lives of those who've followed it. He then walks us through the steps that dark horses follow to find success and fulfillment on their own terms, including focusing on "micromotives" to figure out where you fit, making decisive choices, creating your own options, and trying new strategies until you find something that works. We end our conversation with how Todd would like to see the Dark Horse dynamic incorporated into our educational system.

Your Brand Will Be The Only Thing Left

The fact that Nick Santonastasso statistically shouldn't even be alive is unbelievable. But then you see what he does in the gym, and "unbelievable" takes on a whole new meaning. The 20-year-old from New Jersey was born missing both of his legs, his right arm and all but one finger on his left hand. He's one of the most inspiring people you'll see in the gym because he has never let that get in his way.

Santonastasso was born with Hanhart syndrome, an extremely rare condition that left him legless and missing an arm. According to his YouTube post, "My Life Story," Santonastasso is one of only 12 people that have ever been born with the condition. "Of those 12, 8 of them are dead," he said in the video.

His Instagram is full of videos and pictures of him in the gym, coming up with creative and inspiring ways to work the muscles he does have. He doesn't use prosthetics to get around—he is pictured usually standing upright on what is left of his legs, rarely without a massive grin.

And he is now touring the world speaking alongside Tony Robbins.

Santonastasso gained fame as a teenager with his prank videos—notably, this one where he dressed up as a zombie and scared Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus. Today, he spends most of his time in the gym and doing motivational speaking.

This guy is a prime example of living life to the fullest, and is seriously motivating. One thing is for sure: After checking out his videos, Santonastasso leaves with literally zero excuses for the gym.

Clinton C. Sparks (born September 18, 1975) is an American DJ, record producer, songwriter, radio personality, and marketer from Boston, Massachusetts. Check out his new book - http://winbiginmusic.com

He initially started his career as a rapper, dancer, producer, and DJ who gained notoriety by making bootleg remixes and mixtapes and parlayed that into hosting radio shows on Boston's Hot 97.7, Baltimore's 92Q, Hartford's Hot 93.7, and Sirius XM's Shade 45 (among others). He was the long-time host of a worldwide syndicated radio show called SmashTime Radio (also referred to as Get Familiar with Clinton Sparks). He is the current host of Get Familiar Radio on Dash Radio, a digital radio platform for which he also serves as Vice President of Business Development.

In 2012, he was nominated for a Grammy for his production work on Lady Gaga's Born This Way. That year, he also won a BMI songwriting award for writing Pitbull's "Shut It Down" and has since won several ASCAP Awards with DJ Snake as part of his Get Familiar Music publishing company. He has written and produced songs for a number of notable acts, including Akon, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Uzi Vert, Big Sean, and numerous others. Sparks has also made music of his own, including the 2005 album, Maybe You Been Brainwashed, and the 2014 EP, ICONoclast. He was featured on the song "Saturday Night," which was featured on the soundtrack for the 2016 stand-up comedy film, Kevin Hart: What Now?.

Additionally, Sparks co-founded the mixtape database, MixUnit.com; served as music correspondent for the E! series, The Daily 10 and E! News; and has held executive positions at a variety of companies including Karmaloop, Islide, PingTank, IC Realtech, and, currently, Dash Radio and FaZe Clan.
