We discuss their work AND the new seminarian process that was just rolled out this year that is being used in all dioceses.

National Vocation Awareness Week 2023

The ability to collaborate with colleagues in the same field is important, especially in Catholic school enrollment. Sharing ideas, plans, and social media campaigns, provides everyone the opportunity to see what can work best for different audiences. 
 
This week, hosts Marianela Nunez and Michael Bress spoke with colleague and fellow school enrollment professional, Kristin Moore, Director of Marketing and Enrollment for the Office of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Seattle. The group discusses Kristin’s career path, starting with her career as a Catholic school teacher, then to her role as a school-level advancement director and how she ended up working with over 70 schools at the Diocesan level. 

Moore talks about her philosophy on working with principals, teachers, advancement directors and, of course, parents. The group rounds out the conversations highlighting Moore’s work on creating materials for not only the schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle, but also other Dioceses around the country and why it is important for Catholic education to have a consistent, strong brand message everywhere.

Kristin Moore on Catholic School Advancement

For our last podcast of 2023, we welcome in beloved and award-winning Talking Saints podcast co-host Laurie Power to discuss Advent and her newest vocation, consecrated virgin. She has now entered into a new status within the church by becoming consecrated into one of the oldest orders of the Catholic faith, which took place on November 21 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where Bishop Dennis Sullivan celebrated the Rite of Consecration to a Life of Virginity for a Woman Living in the World. Laurie chats with Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh abut her discernment path, how this vocation differs from that of a woman religious, and what it is expected of her.

The role of the Director of Catholic Identity is a very special one at the high schools in the Diocese of Camden. The priests that hold these positions are not only spiritual directors for the student body, but are often seen as advisor, counselors or someone to talk to when a student is having a rough day.

The Diocese of Camden’s Office of Catholic Education recently welcomed its newest staff member, Sarah Kerins, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent for School Services. On this week’s episode, host Marianela Nunez and co-host Michael Bress talk with Sarah about her journey through Catholic education as a teacher, principal, and most recently, Director of Enrollment and Marketing for the Diocese of Allentown as well as her own Catholic faith journey. 

The group also discusses Sarah’s decision to join the Diocese of Camden, her hopes for the new role, and her thoughts on school safety, working with parents, and government programs.

As Talking Saints kicks off a new year, Laurie and Pete unpack the life of Saint Angela Merici, a 16th century virgin and foundress.  This devout young woman, called by God to establish the Company of St. Ursula, devoted her life to the education of young women and the care of the poor.  On her feast day, may we follow her example in caring for those God has placed in our lives.

What a week!

This week, Jen Mauro and the Diocese of Camden’s Vocations Advisory Board had the pleasure of touring Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY, also know as Dunwoodie, to learn more about how the school has introduced the propaedeutic stage to their seminarian program. Including a walk through of the great facility, the VOAB group were able to sit down with seminarians currently in this new intense beginning stage of seminary that was only recently rolled out in the United States after the announcement of formation changes by the Vatican a few years ago. 

Joining us on the show this week to talk about the stage in depth is Fr. Adam Cichoski, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Camden.

The Propaedeutic Stage

It’s Catholic Press Month so we decided to bring in a few heavy hitters, Gretchen Crowe, Editor in Chief of OSV News and Jennifer Brinker, Reporter for the St. Louis Review. Catholic Press Month with Gretchen Crowe & Jennifer Brinker

For the past four years, a seasonal homeless shelter has operated in Atlantic City that is like no other in the history of the resort town. The Saint Joseph Winter Shelter at Quaremba Hall on the campus of Saint Michael Church (the Parish of Saint Monica) in the city’s Ducktown area has been the newest outlet for the charisms of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. Joining us on the show today to discuss the shelter, the amazing work of the volunteers who support it, and the nature of the religious community that infuse the shelter with its unique properties are returning guests Sister Ann Kateri, C.F.R., and Sister Joseph, C.F.R.

The trio talked about the journey to their current role, the uniqueness of the job, and the highs and lows since taking the reins. Education Technology with FACTS

Naming Saint George the Patron of England, King Edward III referred to him as “the most invincible athlete of Christ.”

Talking Saints - George of Lydda

It’s another laughter-filled episode of Talking Catholic, as co-hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh  welcome a new guest to the show: Deacon Dean Johnson, who serves in Church of the Holy Family, Sewell.
 
First, Deacon Dean shares what he learned during his time in the diaconate program – both educationally and spiritually. “The more I got to know about the Church, the more I fell in love with her,” he says.
 
He goes on to share how the diaconate is a way of life – one full of joy, patience, listening and understanding – whether he’s at the altar, teaching in a classroom or jamming on his guitar.

Talking Saints - Philip & James

The spring sports season is in full swing for elementary and high schools across the Diocese of Camden, which means it is time to check in with Catholic Star Herald sports reporter Mark Zimmaro.
 
Co-hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Bress join forces once again to talk with Mark about team outlooks across various spring sports including baseball, softball, track and field, and boys and girls lacrosse. They also discuss Mark’s ability to balance family – with two children now! – while covering area high school sports, and so much more.
 
Mark also talks about how he tracks down coaches and athletes before and after games and how discovers the story beyond the stats.

“The things that we love tell us what we are.”  These were just ten of the thousands of words attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas, influential Doctor of the Church, Dominican friar, theologian, and philosopher.  On his feast day on this Monday, Laurie Power and Pete Sanchez kick off a new year of “Talking Saints” with a look at the life and work of this incredible 13th Century thinker who still guides Church doctrine and thought through this present age.  Laurie and Pete also share stories on his privileged upbringing, the attempts of his family to dissuade him from a religious life, what he thought about boring people, and the origins of his school nickname “The Dumb Ox.”

“Lord, you inspired Saint Thomas Aquinas with an ardent desire for holiness and study of sacred doctrine.  In his example, may we understand and live the truth of Christ.  Amen.”

The rallying cry for the Cristeros who sacrificed their lives in defense of religious freedom, this phrase was uttered by the youngest of the revolutionaries, 15 year-old Jose Sanchez del Rio, just before his brutal death in 1928 at the hands of the oppressive Mexican government.  On the now-saint’s feast day, Laurie and Pete unpack the courageous life of this martyr, and how his fight for the Catholic faith can inspire anyone, young and old, to stand up for the truth of the Gospel. Who is Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati? Faithful son and brother, amiable friend, avid mountaineer, social activist, and devotee of the Blessed Sacrament. Saint John Paul II called him “The Man of Eight Beatitudes.”  He has been a patron of World Youth Day.

In 1889, an Italian Catholic nun named Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini sought the permission of Pope Leo XIII to go to China as a missionary. “Not to the East, but to the West,” he replied, urging her to travel to the United States and serve the impoverished Italian immigrants in New York City.  So began Mother Cabrini’s prolific ministry to the poor, sick, abandoned, and uneducated throughout the United States and around the world.  As the Catholic Church today celebrates the feast of the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Talking Saints hosts Laurie and Pete unpack the life of this faithful and courageous woman, the first American citizen to be canonized, and still much-loved in New York.
