Scott Rosner
Professor of Professional Practice; Academic Director, M.S. in Sports Management Program, School of Professional Studies

As Academic Director of the Master of Science in Sports Management program, Scott Rosner leads all programmatic and curricular development efforts, creates professional development opportunities for students, and manages all strategic planning efforts for the program, including marketing, enrollment, student life, and alumni affairs. Rosner is also a Professor of Professional Practice, teaching graduate-level courses in the discipline of Sports Management.

Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia in January 2018, Rosner was a Practice Professor in the Legal Studies and Business Ethics Department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Faculty Associate Director of the Wharton Sports Business Initiative. He taught courses in Sports Business Management and Negotiation and Dispute Resolution to undergraduate and MBA students, and taught Sports Law at both Wharton and Penn Law School. He was a five-time recipient of the prestigious Whitney Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching (2006, 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2017). He has been the co-host of the Wharton Sports Business Show, a weekly look at the business of sports on SiriusXM’s Business Radio (channel 111), which has been heard on Tuesdays from 4–5 p.m. (Eastern) since its debut in January 2014. Rosner was also the Academic Director of the Wharton Sports Business Academy, a summer program for rising high school juniors and seniors. Prior to being promoted to the rank of Practice Professor in July 2016, he was a Practice Associate Professor from July 2013–June 2016, a Practice Assistant Professor from July 2010–June 2013 and a full-time Lecturer in the same department from July 2002–June 2010. He served as the Faculty Associate Director of the Wharton Sports Business Initiative since its inception in 2004 and served as the Faculty Mentor to the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s basketball team from 2003–2008.

Rosner has led consulting projects with a variety of clients both in his role as a faculty member leading student project teams and as the Principal of Hudson Sports Consulting, a sports advisory firm that provides a wide range of services in the business and legal aspects of the sports industry. Sim Segal
Academic Director and Senior Lecturer in Discipline, M.S. in Enterprise Risk Management Program

With 30+ years of experience in measuring and managing risk, Segal is a globally recognized ERM thought leader with ERM experience in a variety of sectors, such as insurance, banking, credit cards, technology, consumer goods, biotech, telecomm, hospitality, energy, services, timberland, education and research, nonprofit organizations, and government bodies.

Segal is author of Corporate Value of Enterprise Risk Management (Wiley, March 2011), which is required reading on the syllabi of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and leading universities in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, China, Italy, Croatia, and Egypt.

Segal has designed and coauthored several ERM research studies. He has also authored numerous articles in publications such as Forbes, American Banker, and Corporate Finance Review and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Global Finance, National Underwriter, and Rough Notes. Segal is a frequently invited speaker to ERM conferences and events and has made over 300 ERM-related presentations globally.

Segal is active on industry committees. He served as the inaugural chairman of the Risk Committee of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) (a global education and research organization), leading the design and implementation of its ERM program (2009-2011). He also served as chief editor of Risk Management, a quarterly international ERM publication (2008–2009). Segal currently serves as vice chair of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) ERM Applications Committee and as a member of the Joint Risk Management Section’s ERM Symposium Program Committee, jointly run by the Casualty Actuarial Society, the CIA, and the SOA.

Prior to SimErgy, Segal led ERM consulting practices at Deloitte Consulting, Aon, and Watson Wyatt (now part of Willis Towers Watson). Prior to his consulting experience, Segal was an officer at MetLife, where he was a key player in the first successful adoption of economic capital by a U.S. insurer, assisting in its integration into strategic planning, capital management, pricing, and financial reporting. Segal also led one of the internal teams to convert MetLife into a stock company.

Beth Fisher-Yoshida
Academic Director; Professor of Practice; Vice Chair of Faculty

As Professor of Professional Practice, Beth Fisher-Yoshida teaches classes in negotiation, conflict resolution, and conflict analysis. Her approach to learning is based on her core belief that when we improve communication by developing more self-awareness, we will have better relationships and improved negotiation practices.

Dr. Fisher-Yoshida is Co-Executive Director of the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict and Complexity (AC4) and Director of the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) program, both housed in the Earth Institute at Columbia University. In her role at YPS she has been working to develop systemic approaches to building more effective communities through youth leadership in Medellín, Colombia, using a Social Lab approach.

Dr. Fisher-Yoshida partners with clients to develop customized interventions aimed at improving organizational performance. She is able to blend the best of both worlds: the knowledge from academia with effective practices to apply successfully to real life situations. Her firm, Fisher Yoshida International, focuses on leading organizations through change by improving communication and creating shared goals and practices to align with the organization’s mission and vision. She works globally with clients and speaks conversational Japanese having lived and worked in Japan for 13 years.

Dr. Fisher-Yoshida is the author of numerous articles, chapters, edited books, and authored a book on transnational leadership. She has a new book to be released soon on women and negotiation. Her main areas of focus are Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM), negotiation, intercultural communication, conflict resolution and transformative learning.

As Vice Chair of the Faculty of Professional Studies, Dr. Fisher-Yoshida collaborates with the Chair of Faculty and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to coordinate and manage the School’s academic governance committees—specifically, the Academic Excellence Committee, Admissions Committee, Chair’s Committee, Resource Allocation Committee, and Reputation, Relationship, and Development Committee.

Dr. Fisher-Yoshida is also a Certified Clinical Sociologist (CCS).

Since 2015, she has served as Vice President, Workforce Solutions and Intelligence, for Lockheed Martin. In that role, she has accelerated the company’s global execution of strategic business objectives through the design and implementation of enterprise-wide integrated talent and workforce strategies. As a trusted advisor and strategist to Lockheed Martin’s Chief Human Resources Officer and executive leadership team, she provides direction for internal and sector excellence across core human capital capabilities, including talent acquisition, strategic workforce planning, HRIS/analytics, leadership development, talent management, M&A, and organizational effectiveness.

Robert Klitzman, M.D.

Robert Klitzman, M.D., is a professor of psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Joseph Mailman School of Public Health, and the Academic Director of the Master of Science in Bioethics program at Columbia University. He co-founded and for five years co-directed the Columbia University Center for Bioethics, and directed the Ethics and Policy Core of the HIV Center for 10 years.

He has published over 120 scientific journal articles, eight books, and numerous chapters on critical issues in bioethics including genetics, neuroethics, HIV prevention, research ethics, and doctor-patient relationships.

Klitzman has received numerous awards for his work, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund, the Aaron Diamond Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation. He is a member of the Empire State Stem Cell Commission and served on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Research Ethics Advisory Panel. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a regular contributor to the New York Times and CNN.

Craig Irvine, Ph.D.
Lecturer in the Discipline of Narrative Medicine; Academic Director, MS in Narrative Medicine

For more than 15 years, Craig Irvine has been designing and teaching cultural competency, ethics, Narrative Medicine, and Humanities and Medicine curricula for residents, medical students, physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, dentists, and other health professionals. He has over 20 years of experience researching the history of philosophy, phenomenology, and narrative ethics, and over 25 years of experience teaching ethics, humanities, the history of philosophy, logic, and narrative medicine at the graduate, undergraduate, and preparatory school levels. 

He has published articles in the areas of ethics, residency education, and literature and medicine and has presented at numerous national and international conferences on these and other topics.

Arthur (Art) Lerner-Lam is the Academic Director for the M.S. in Sustainability Science Program.

Art is also a Lamont Research Professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory a seismologist who has studied and published on the interactions between crust and mantle, the thickness of tectonic plates, the structure of mountain belts and crustal rifts, and active seismicity. He has led scientific expeditions in the Middle East, Europe, Central and South Asia, the Southwest Pacific, and throughout the United States. Over the last 20 years, he has lectured and written widely on natural hazards and society. Lerner-Lam and his colleagues and students have supported the activities of the United Nations, the World Bank, and other international institutions promoting sustainable development in the face of extreme natural hazards.

In addition to being an instructor for Columbia University's Sustainability Science M.S. program, Lerner-Lam also teaches course in the M.S. Sustainability Management, and Environmental Science & Policy programs. With colleagues from political science, economics, and international affairs, Lerner-Lam also has developed related curricula on sustainability management and sustainable investing suited for intensive executive education certificate programs.

Lerner-Lam has held Post-doctoral positions at Scripps and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been at Lamont-Doherty since 1985.  He has been on numerous scientific advisory committees and editorial boards including as a member of the Federal Scientific Earthquake Studies Advisory Committee for the U.S. Geological Survey, as a consultant to the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, and as a contributing author to the U.N.’s Global Risk Update. He has consulted on environmental and natural hazard resilience for the governments of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Chile, India, China, Thailand, Turkey, and Venezuela. He has also testified before the U.S. Congress on the nation’s preparedness for natural disasters.
