Knife Fight Romance - Someday In December

This song is about losing one's grip on the passing of time. The idea initially came from a quote from Alice in Wonderland when referring to time in the 3rd person. Ironically, Ben also got a lot of inspiration from Alice In Wonderland for this album as well. 

The process of creating the music was very technical with lots of time signature changes, so I embraced the theme in the lyrics. It is both experimenting with technical and heavy styles while also embracing steady pounding rhythms at the start and end of the song, representing the more predictable ways in which our lives begin and they end. The chaos can tend to be in the middle. 

Lyrically, I approached this similar to how I write most of my lyrics, which is starting with a feeling and then not questioning or fighting much of what comes to me. I don’t really write any lyrics about any one event or situation, but a feeling or multiple feelings and do my best to express that. This song is about a particular feeling in childhood, when you just can’t wait until you’re older and things will finally start aligning and making sense. Then you start getting older and hope to be wiser, but are more confused than ever. Then you feel like “oh ok, I’m just not grown up yet.” You hope that feeling will come, but then it doesn’t. You get older and nothing is how you thought it would be. You start thinking about the freedom you had as a child and how incredible some of those moments were, and how the weight of responsibility is only getting heavier. You’re never the right age. I think that’s the idea. 

We don’t seem to appreciate what’s right in front of us when it’s happening. We’re longing to be older when we’re children, and nostalgic for childhood when it’s gone. We speak about aging like it’s a disease. I think this was me processing the idea of being fully tied to my own perception, which seems to stretch and expand and retract, especially when it comes to the concept of time passing. I do believe it’s an illusion. The way it’s permeating reality outside of our lives doesn’t actually give us a proper view of what’s happening. I know this sounds like pretentious hogwash but I think it’s true and it was the feeling I needed to express at the time. 

Ironically, enough time has passed now since writing it that I don’t have this feeling at all anymore.  I don’t long for my childhood, but I do still long for a sense of wonder and of freedom. I’m much better at accepting present moments now I think. I’m also in a place of peace and actually of joy with my life. I didn’t have that when I wrote this song. The reality of this album and these songs is we wrote most of it so long ago, that screaming the lyrics in a homemade vocal booth (closet) meant I had to conjure up these feelings all over again rather than write all new lyrics. It was fun to breath life into these concepts again and sort of alter my mental state to another version of myself. I finally got it out.
