For the first single from Milton Gulli’s first album for Tangential Music, the Portuguese/Mozambican multi-instrumentalist delivers a powerful warning about the ability of social media to polarise society. The song title ‘Algoritmo’ (unsurprisingly) translates from the Portuguese to ‘algorithm’ and it is these easily manipulated algorithms that feed into our daily lives and choices that have inspired this haunting yet somehow uplifting song. 

  Milton is on top form here, his 25 plus years of producing, writing and performing funk, hip hop, reggae, electronic and African soul music blending beautifully into a distinctive piece of music that sounds both recognisable and totally fresh. A gorgeously moody synth loop, syncopated claps, lilting acoustic guitar and choir-like backing vocals provide the bedrock for his strong lead vocal line and a killer chorus that truthfully proclaims “We are all in the same boat”. Fuzzed electric guitar, a tight dancehall rap from Milton himself (he collaborated with rapper Simba for a Mozambican tribute to A Tribe Called Quest for BBE Music and worked with Brazilian rap legend Marcelo D2 after all) and a standout guest spot from Mozambican poet Tchaka Waka Bantu complete the picture. 

  Brightly produced by Milton himself, ‘Algoritmo’ has an appeal that transcends the language differences; we don’t need to speak Portuguese to feel the universality of the message or to love the sound. Contemporary African music has been gaining remarkable popularity in recent years but it’s not all Afrobeats and RnB shaped sounds that represent that vast continent and Milton Gulli’s uniquely soulful synthesis of suburban Lisbon and East Africa deserves our attention.

Brighton producer and composer GiwHa has turned his obvious talents to a cover version and fresh as he is, it’s not some dusty old soul groove but a blunt-fuelled slow jam from 2018. 

The original of ‘D’Evils’ was a slow-burning hit for the acclaimed Californian singer SiR who has worked with Kendrick Lamar, Jill Scott and Anderson.Paak amongst many and its reggae sampling message of serious chilling struck a chord with our man. With a music researcher’s attention to detail, GiwHa switched the beat entirely but kept the original sample and melody, inviting his friend Nelson Navarro to add a fresh new verse to make it uniquely his. 

After a number of instrumental only releases, it’s a joy to hear GiwHa showcasing his own unique voicing to his sound. Chilled R&B that is as deep as a (Frank) Ocean.

Like a message beamed soulfully from the late 90s comes this seductive melodic drum and bass hybrid that would have happily opened an LTJ Bukem set back at Bar Rumba. Built around the gorgeous opening bars of Lindsey Wesker's 2015 soul-jazz stunner 'Open Up', the enigmatic former Talkin’ Loud alumni T.O.E. adds a prodding synth bass line (reminiscent of the great PFM - remember them?) that follows Wesker’s vocal harmonies and builds layer upon layer of polyrhythms, percussion and cheeky keyboard sparkles until the track bursts with sunshine energy.

An electronic exploration of space in time, this is a spacious roller of a track, inspired by early Bukem, High Contrast and Calibre but sounding as fresh as tomorrow. The conscious, yet dancefloor floor led remix retains the orchestral majesty and atmosphere, while injecting the song with an irresistible energy with its rolling drum and bass breaks.

How this previously unreleased track taken from the original 2013 recording sessions never made it on the soon-to-be reissued ‘Sincerity’ album (on Tangential) says a lot about the quality on the original record as this is a stunningly evocative slice of post-garage electronic soul.

Suspended synth chords are the poignant bedding that fills this beautiful piece of music, skittering and sparse electronic percussion add space and movement while the (secretive) female vocalist’s song title refrain is snipped and scattered across the track. Magnetic, seductive and melancholic all in one, perfect for that autumnal feeling.
