Tantrums formed in 2009 as an electronic duo project for current lead vocalist and bassist Jade McInally and electronics sequencer Sarah Phelan. After several months of collaboration with various musicians the trio expanded permanently with the addition of drummer James Campbell and multi-instrumentalists John Nguyen and Lucy Rash.

Since its inception, Tantrums have gigged regularly in their home town of Melbourne with several tours to Newcastle (Electrofringe Festival), Canberra, and Sydney, Australia. In the past two years the band has featured at Campus A Low Hum Festival in New Zealand alongside CARIBOU, FOUR TET, and TORO Y MOI and has shared the stage with the likes of MOUNT KIMBIE (Hotflush), PVT (Warp Records), SEEKAE (Rice is Nice Records), and DJANIMALS (Stones Throw). 

More recently Tantrums supported UK electronic heavyweights UNKLE on their 2011 Australian national Groovin' The Moo sideshows in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth gaining the respect of their peers and drawing interest from new audiences. Following the UNKLE tour, a further highlight of 2011 was the band's sold-out headline show at Collingwood's Grace Darling Hotel which drew more than 200 punters to the venue to see Tantrums' ethereal and thoroughly engaging live show. In April 2012, Tantrums' Sarah Phelan entered into solo electronic producer earning the opportunity to support Clark (Warp Records) at Melbourne's Revolt Artspace.

Releasing their first single 'Anomie' in November 2010 via New Weird Australia the band has received national airplay on Triple J, RRR, PBS, FBi Radio, and Vivid Live radio programs curated by Lou Reed during the 2010 festival in Sydney. Tantrums have also developed a solid network of friends, collaborators, and supporters both in Australia and abroad. Having established a strong creative relationship with James Griffith and Pablo Clements of UNKLE, the band travelled to the United Kingdom in November 2011 to record at Griffith and Clements' studio and prepare for a string of exciting releases in 2012. 

Though currently self-managed, the band is looking forward to the prospect of an inspiring and vastly productive year in 2012. It is collective creativity, collaboration, and pooled imagination that have become feature elements of Tantrums' approach to writing and performing music. Likewise, it is the members' shared passion for positive change that has pushed the band to assume the exciting position in which they now find themselves.

"Colourful triptychs of melancholy melodies collide with frosty drum machine ticks and rainbows of atmospherics layered upon eachother. The imploding sound cleverly dubbed “midi-evil disco” is the creation of Melbourne’s T A N T R U M S; Jade McInally (vocals/guitar/keys), Sarah Phelan (keys/production/programming) and John Nguyen (keys/synths/programming). Taking the moodiness and bleak aura of Joy Division, extracting the relative revelations of PiL, and the subtleties of entirely their own doing, they have stumbled upon the makeup of a greatly unique and intriguing band. Like abstract symphonies soundtracking an art school thriller film instilled with the tribal percussion of Telepathe and the airy eeriness of The Virgin Suicides soundtrack, the output of this relatively new band has been documented some, and they’re currently recording some more. Keep your eyes and ears open for their upcoming releases, they’re bound to be interesting."
