New private playlist

Operating out of his Brooklyn studio, Mike Isai is a new name to grace the Meanwhile catalogues as the Australian imprint delivers its 18th release with “Home / 87 North”. A single remix comes from fellow US artist, Forerunners.

A relative newcomer to the Progressive House scene, Mike Isai’s nascent production career has already seen a debut on the Nick Warren led, Hope Recordings, via September 2020’s “Pillars to Butterflies” EP. A March 2021 reworking of Shanil Alox’s “Algorithm” for Droid9 illustrated Isai’s remix capabilities, as the US star now debuts on Meanwhile with his twin-tracker.

Opening proceedings, “Home” is a dark and sultry piece that pulsates hypnotically through its near 9-minute voyage with a panoply of textured layers and white-noise effects. Quickly hitting its stride, a pounding kick is accompanied by an immaculately syncopated synth motif that provides the basis for a counterpoint phrase to sit elegantly on top in glittering repetitive pattern. Reaching a rousing filtered denouement at the mid-point, “Home” drops back into a familiar arrangement as all elements combine to impressive effect in the third movement.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic framework of its partner, “87 North” immediately impresses with its 16th note bassline and seismic kick. Another syncopated synth loop provides an imposing trademark production technique as haunting melodies drift over the mid-range, drenched in reverb and white-noise washes. Coruscating pads add further intrigue as the 7-minute piece evolves, coming fully to the fore in a ‘wall of sound’ breakdown, before the second half picks up the pace again with percussive intensity. The juxtaposition of meandering melodic threads and bassline urgency thus creates an impressively woven dynamism.

Another new artist to grace Meanwhile finds Arizona based Brenden LaBonte creating a potent wave of success with his Forerunners moniker. With over a double century of production credits to his name for some of the finest modern dance imprints, Sudbeat Music, Anjunadeep, and Black Hole have all played host to the US artist’s emotive soundscapes. Reworking “Home”, the Forerunners remix is chock full of the trademark soundscapes that characterise LaBonte’s work, with whispering melodies floating atop a powerful beat and ticking hi-hat groove. A relentless bassline sequence adds weight and poise over the 8-minute offering as subtle variations on Mike Isai’s original make their presence felt. Pausing for breath at a spine-tingling mid-point, cadenced bass groove and subtle melodic prowess hit the heights in the latter stages.

Now, Australian, Mike Rish, becomes the latest debutant to showcase his talents on GMJ & Matter’s blossoming imprint with the 3-track “Beyond” EP.
 
From his home on Australia’s south-eastern coast, Mike Rish has witnessed an impressive rise to notoriety, courtesy of a clutch of high-profile releases on an exclusive set of blue-chip labels. Not wanting to flood the progressive house scene with a swathe of formulaic dance music, the Melbourne resident’s “selective output” is based on a carefully thought-out commitment to “keep people engaged, but also wanting more”. Thus, Rish’s work for the likes of Colorize, Serendeep and Juicebox Music, has seen the Australian carve out a sizeable niche for himself, further enhanced by March 2021’s 12-track “Interlinked” album for UGENIUS Music.
 
Opening his Meanwhile account with the “Beyond” title track, a chunky beat and cavernous bass groove sit tightly against off-beat hats and snare. Filtering into sonic range, an elegant arpeggio provides glorious melodic interplay as white-noise washes and meandering pads pulse gently across the near 10-minute piece. Full of spine-tingling atmosphere, additional melodic phrasing is introduced at the breakdown before extending into the third movement with ease, combined with a raft of effects and masterful touches.
 
A bouncing bass groove immediately finds “Mindgame” oozing with hypnotic force and low-end menace. Sat perfectly in between deep kick and ticking hats, a flowing melodic line ripples across proceedings as it rises and falls with filtered dynamism. Twisted vocal cuts and acetylene-edged synth effects pitch with glissando range adding to the aural collage in a track full of dark and mesmerising beauty.
 
Closing the EP, “Here For You” is characterised by an intricate percussive arrangement that introduces a subtle melodic backdrop. Effects and textured pads span the stereo stage in modulated glory as a pulsating lead melody enters the fray in the second movement. Building steadily before revealing itself fully in the stripped back breakdown, the second half blossoms in commanding fashion with a pulsating confluence of rhythm and melody. The result is a track that illustrates Mike Rish’s unique talent and technique.

amháin, hailing from Ireland’s east coast, the aspiring Dublin born artist has made a mark in his adopted Australian home, witnessed by a career path that continues to rise on a rapidly upwards trajectory.

Performances at some of the leading global festivals are testament to this success as Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle and Rainbow Serpent have all witnessed amháin’s immaculately crafted sets. Able to translate those skills to the more intimate club environment, Berlin’s Sisyphos and Los Angeles’ Pattern Bar are also prominent names on a polished resumé.

EMPHI - The rising star from Stockholm known as Johan started his musical journey at an early age having been born into a family of musicians. He's taken all the elements from his family and has mixed them with his personal touch of melodic and progressive vibes...

These two have teamed up and delivered a stunning original. Subandrio is on remix duties for this one he delivers an absolute belter of a peak time remix. This one is guaranteed to be a big one over the next few months....

Crisp production, and driving beats alongside the elliptical tones of the original 'Softcastle' release, have been re-dramatised by 'Nick Warren & Nicolas Rada'. This track sits nicely being played anywhere in the world, think 4am in a club, festival or after hours, the sun has not quite hit the curvature of the earth, but it will.

Dubby electronic music with an indie dance vibe not really fitting any easy genre, slEdger is the latest musical project from London based Dj/Producer Rob Vision.

Rob has released music under various names over the last 15 years gaining support from people as diverse as John Digweed, Mary Anne Hobbs, Ashley Beedle and Annie Nightingale on BBC Radio 1, he’s also DJ'ed at various seminal UK clubs like Back To Basics, Elements and Turnmills often playing in the more musically experimental back rooms. 

From being a roadie, drummer, club dj, pirate radio host, club promoter, music pr and booker for other artists, Rob's journey in music has been a varied one to say the least, but with slEdger he may finally have found his musical calling.

'Making their Plaisirs Sonores Records debut are production duo, Kamilo Sanclemente & Dabeat, with an incredible three track EP called Lonely Space. The Colombian pair have collaborated for quite some time signing tracks to number of labels like Replug and The Soundgarden.

Opening with a cosmic weapon, 'Lonely Space' develops into an epic deep progressive journey filled with beautiful synth melody, female vocal, fx and hypnotic pads. Elegant and hypnotic from the first bar to the last. Next up, 'Orbital' digs deep too. Opening with more low end grunt, melodic arps float lift the mood midway before deep warm pads float into earshot. Musically rich and utterly satisfying. Finally, Alex O'Rion concludes the EP with an exquisite remix of 'Lonely Space'. Stronger and more intense, sonic fx and melodic patterns are balanced against the percussive bedrock leaving ample room for the main motifs to grow creating a sense of controlled peril.  '
