Jennifer is a Ugandan woman writer who currently resides in Britain after 10 to 13 years of study. She writes prose, short stories but mainly novels. Her work is focused on bringing the Ugandan experience to the attention of international readership, but mainly to engage Ugandans in looking at themselves from a writer’s point of view; forcing them to look at their past and to understand where they are heading. Interview by Naseemah Mohamed

Ilwad Elman grew up like an “average” girl in peaceful Canada, but at 19 heard the call to go back to her native Somalia to work fearlessly for peace, equality and economic empowerment in a nation still struggling with Al-Shabab, patriarchal attitudes, and gender-based violence. 

Eight years later, she has helped bring about unprecedented legal and societal changes while serving as a director at the Elman Peace Center, which rehabilitates former child soldiers and victims of sexual violence. 

Together, we take a journey through the young leader's story from Somalia to Ottawa and back.
