Banded Structures [disquiet0651]

Every old instrument carries with it the memory of its best performance. The broken cello in the back of the junk store was no exception.

Disquiet Junto 0659 had us squinting at a close-up photograph of the back of a cello, and instructed us to interpret the grain and pockmarks as a musical score.

This composition is an interpretation of Nick Drake's "Cello Song", reimagined as a symphonic piece. I spent an inordinate amount of time with a physical modeling synthesizer to try to create the sound of the broken cello. I hope it's convincing.

To hear the music like the junkstore cello remembers it, it's best to use a trusted set of headphones.

A New Earth And New Heaven - #3934 (86R73 Percent 602 Left) By Chair House 240921

This track is an experimental little thing made for the 666th Disquiet Junto. It uses ‘the devil’s interval’ of chords made up from notes 6 semitones apart, a mix of 4/4 and 6/4 and, of course, it’s 66.6bpm. I played with effects to add to the gritty, disturbing sound.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

As per the instructions, the track starts and ends with the sound of a turn signal, which is then processed, cut up and re-arranged and then over ruled by a funky beat. Except the beat is interrupted by the occasional failed connection, to remind me of the dodgy sound systems I had in my car when I was young. And then the beat stops, the turn signal returns, first in bits and then steady and strong. I turn into my driveway, and I am home.
