great sample manipulation and effects, this is a real throwback to when beats could sound like anything with the right timing and effect on the listener

This week I wanted to work on a beat with a positive vibe, which made me think back to this flip. This was probably the first beat I made with a happy vibe, back in 2016 when I first started producing. ( https://soundcloud.com/tapeheadloops/mic-masters ) I found some really nice Ramsey Lewis sample, and chopped it up into loads of pieces, each one was under a second long. This was definitely a big step for me, because I wasn’t chopping a loop to flip it at a different BPM, all of these sounds were from different parts of the sample, which I chopped into a completely new melody that I made myself. Because of that I remember being really gassed off the flip at the time, it just felt crazy to make something that sounded completely new, made the beat feel more like my own creation. Being an old beat the mix is pretty bad, and I’ve been wanting to improve it for a while. I added more low end to the sample, and completely re did the drums, although I kept the original drum groove as an additional layer this time. 

At the time one of the things I was most gassed on was how the Microphone Master Acapella sounded over this beat, so I kept that pretty much the same, and I think I’ve done a better job at doing the verses justice, I think they fit the vibe and tone of the beat really well. Das EFX tracks always have a different kind of energy, and I think the upbeat style to this beat fits that attitude nicely.

Had to drop this whilst I'm still 22.

I was definitely excited about this beat when I made it. I was probably a couple of months into my first term at university, and at the time I was getting waved most days with other 1st year students at my hall and making beats whenever I felt creative after a zoot.

This beat was pretty basic in that sense, I dug the sample on youtube, rated it, chopped it, and flipped it in a way where I wasn't just stealing a loop, which I always tried to do on my beats from day one. Another thing notable about this beat is it's the first time I layered multiple samples together for a melody, in this case I layered bass notes with the strings, both of which were from the same sample, but at different points.

I also tried to be more selective with my drums on this one, which definitely made it stand out from my other beats at the time where I'd put any drums over samples without thinking, because I was mostly focused on hearing what the loop sounded like as a beat, as I was really just gassed to be making music and didn't think too much about its technical side. Although I wasn't thinking technically about the drums on this one, in terms of layering and levels (which I didn't know about at this point), I feel like this track was a step in the right direction at the time, as I was more immersed in its vibe and therefore tried to choose drums that worked with the feel of the sample.

I had only been living independently for a couple of months, so I was still fairly confident in my decisions and way of living, but I do think that cracks were already starting to show due to the darker vibe of the sample, and the haunting, scared sound of the melody I chose to flip (if that makes sense). This only begins to make more sense to me when I think on the acapella I chose to put over the beat at the time , Inspectah Decks verse from C.R.E.A.M. Lines like "Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess, I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed, but I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth?" were completely what I was feeling deep down when I was making the beat, and I remember how happy I was with the final product because the lyrics matched what I was feeling. However, I hadnt truly accepted or even acknowledged these thoughts yet, as I know for a fact I bunned after making this beat, and for the rest of that academic year. It's just interesting in retrospect to see how early my mind was subconsciously struggling with the ways I was living, and how it's shown in the music I was making.

I've now added new drums to the loop and made two versions, deciding to add Raekwon's verse as a switchup after Inspectah Deck, the opposite order to how it plays out in the original track.
