I've got serious love for Hip Hop and a real wide range of artists inspire me, but there's a special place in my heart for DOOM. When I first discovered his music I listened almost exclusively to his different aliases (and MF GRIMM) for a year straight - the year before I decided to get into producing my own beats. I really think DOOM's approach to music properly inspired me to make my own, his style is so unique it really cements the idea of anyone being able to do music as long as it's what they're passionate about. Remixing DOOM is so bittersweet these days. It always hits me so hard how talented he was, and the dedication to music just shows so clearly in his verses, it’s hard to describe but I always get goosebumps, like I can hear his soul and passion in the rhymes. It really is an honour to be able to use this verse for a remix, I’m too grateful for being able to put my own spin on them, the subject matter really resonates with me, and I really wanted to remix this track with my own perspective on ‘ladies’ in mind. Even though he’s clearly having fun with the metaphor on this track, a lot of the lines are mad deep and have a proper realism to them, so I wanted to try and really bring that out in this remix. What DOOM’s talking about is deep at the end of the day, a relationship with drugs is a serious topic and in this generation, I’d say it’s widespread, and to be honest I see it as completely endemic of being unable to face reality and it’s problems, and trying to escape them, choosing an easy route that only keeps you trapped and crushes ambition. That’s just my outlook though, but I really hear that pain and sorrow in DOOM’s verses, and I wanted to build on that and bring it out more by making the beat mad emotional, using vocals (which are actually a mans but sped up) that kind of give the ‘ladies’ a presence behind DOOM’s vocals. The piano is layered from the same sample, which is another melancholic melody that I layered over the vocals/bassline to try and build on that vibe of the track. Overall I’m pretty gassed with what I made here, it’s really different to the original track but I’m happy with that, I just wanted to tap into what I rate and hear in the verses and build on that, which I think I did here.

I flipped this sample back in October 2017, and have already reworked the beat in 2020, but I decided to rework it again for this remix.

The whole vibe of this beat is really dark, reflecting the situation I was in at the time I made it. I had just started my 2nd year at university, and was badly trapped in the lifestyle of smoking weed. I was smoking far too often to escape an unhappy reality which I myself had created through all the bad decisions and destructive life choices I made throughout my 1st year. I can’t remember much about making this beat at all, except I made it late at night, sampling the Fantastic Planet soundtrack, which I knew had been used by Madlib and Rascalz to make beats. I layered two parts of the sample to give it a gritty textured feel, originally flipping the sample at a way faster tempo (around 114BPM). However, I chose to slow it down to 95BPM for a much darker vibe, which I was feeling a lot more at the time, as it fit the general melody I created out of the sample much better.

To me, this beat sounds like I’m expressing feelings of sinking further and further without any hope. Thinking on my situation at the time only strengthens this idea to me, as I was starting another year in the same negative environment that I had grown to hate during first year, so the crushing weight of a seemingly inevitable and inescapable year of unhappiness and regret is shown in the overall sound and vibe of this beat. Because of all that, I thought it would make sense to put this acapella over the beat, because it's a song dedicated to smoking, and this beat is also born out of that place, just from a very different viewpoint and perspective. I think they work well together, definitely very different to the vibe of the original.

It’s so tough to pick a favourite DOOM song, but this is up there for me, always found the verses so powerful and I love the original beat. Luckily there’s an extended version which is a lot easier to remix seeing as there’s no sample just drums, and the delivery is slightly different to the original too. For me what stands out about this track is the amount of emotion, it’s definitely present in a lot of DOOM’s earlier songs but this one is where it’s most vivid I think, especially that last verse, really hits hard. Whenever I’ve gone to remix this track that’s the side of the song I try to focus on and match in the choice of sample etc, and for this one I think it worked well in having a subtle but sad melody which reflects that side of the lyrics. This one took ages, I flipped the sample so many different times to layer ontop of each other, and switched between different layering combinations, filtering etc throughout the track. I wanted the track to feel like a journey almost, building up to a slight crescendo on those last few lines from DOOM as tribute to Subroc. I’ve got another remix for this track which I’m saving for the album, this one will also be on there too but I wanted to release it now. There’s so many tracks which I’m really excited to remix, can’t wait to see what happens and how they all turn out.

Can’t recommend MF Grimm enough as an artist, he worked with DOOM all the way from his KMD days and ghostwrote for some very famous artists. This track is my personal favourite from the EP they did together, such a great project it’s a real shame they never did a full length collaboration. The original version has a much darker beat, and I never really thought I’d remix it cause I couldn’t think of anything that needed doing. When I flipped this sample though I was thinking about the motivational energy it gave off, and decided to see if it would fit with this idea of being ‘dedicated’. Cause it was completely different to the original I really liked how it sounded, and really thought it captured the positive side of what Grimm is talking about here, especially when he says ‘not even death can separate the love’, some crazy lyrics with so much meaning which is why I like him so much as an artist. He really is a master with what he writes imo. Grimms track can be applied to everyone of course like he says, dedicated to all his brothers and his crew. Obviously this track was made when Grimm was still working with DOOM, and you can hear Subroc scratched at the start which is a nice tribute, and in light of DOOM passing away, I cut in visuals of both DOOM and Subroc from the Questions video. I wanted to rework and remix this track as an updated version with dedications from Grimm to DOOM in a way, because the lyrics really are timeless in that sense, so it fit perfectly in my opinion.

Getting really excited for the album now, got a lot done in the past few weeks (this weekend especially was crazy) so I feel like I can drop this one. Really tryna keep all the new beats unreleased until the full project drops. I've released this beat before, but now in retrospect this is the perfect DOOM song to put over it, such an interesting break up song seeing as he's dissing himself, and then the levels to what the song is actually about are so deep it's crazy - I've always rated these visuals for the way they explore that theme - glad to be able to use them here without any issues. 

Hope people enjoy this remix, I've always been proud of this beat and this remix really feels like the definitive one for it, although I still like what I did before, that's more experimental I feel like with DOOM and Mos Def on the same track, whereas this just goes hand in hand, had to make it the one for Fancy Clown. Really lucky that the singing on this track matched the key of the sample too, one of my favourite things about the track I wouldn't have remixed it if that hadn't fit. Peace!

Spent ages trying to remix ‘Deep Fried Frenz’ over this beat but it just wasn’t working, the flow patterns weren’t matching with the rhythm of the sample and how I flipped it. I spent a while thinking about other DOOM acapellas that would fit this vibe and did a lot of experimenting. I was going through his album tracklists and wasn’t really having any luck and almost considered scrapping this beat from the album. I then suddenly remembered this bonus track from Operation Doomsday – immediately thought it would be a good fit cause the sinister idea of hearing voices defo blends well with the dark vibe of this beat. The flow fit perfectly and as soon as I heard GRIMMs verse over it I knew it was the one. I really love the tracks when both him and DOOM are emceeing, I think their styles go crazily well together. Overall I’m very happy with the vibe and end product here, happy to share this one now that the album is only a few weeks away. Thought I’d release this one as a single as it was originally a bonus track, wanted to flip it here and have it as a single – I really want to save the big title tracks for the album stream.

Spent a while working this one out - I wanted to be sure on the best vibe to focus on when remixing this. Overall I think the song is meant to be quite light hearted, it's a nice romance story between DOOM and the mic, very interesting concept and it's cool to see this use of personification in a positive way so early on in his discography, which DOOM then expanded on and went all out with on My Favourite Ladies.

The first beat here is one of the first beats I made specifically to use for this project, I knew I'd be flipping the 'smooth operator' vocals to tie into the title of Operation Doomsday. Originally the first beat played out for the whole of this intro, and I almost cut it completely cause something just wasn't right to me. Then when I was much further into the album I heard the sample for the 2nd part of this intro, and instantly heard these vocals over it. That saved this intro, cause I really like the way it starts, and then that 2nd part is great for building the atmosphere and really feels like it's leading up to something, which I didn't have when it was just one beat for the whole intro, even with all the switch ups and layering.

Had a lot of fun editing the visuals for this one too, I really liked the idea of the cartoons playing out across the background to represent the vocals DOOM cuts in at the start, and then adding to the atmosphere of the build up at the end, showing the backstory of DOOM in a more subtle way.

This was a really difficult track to remix, the original is such a classic so I wanted to make sure I showed respect to that whilst trying to do something different. I didn't want to have the whole album be too melancholic, but for this track it felt like the best direction to go in order to do something different. Although the original beat definitely has a hint of sadness to it, I made it more upfront here with the strings and melodies. I also kept that smooth vibe, choosing this sample for that reason, the bassline especially had a nice flow from the chops I sequenced. 

I knew I was going to sample Sade for this beat to keep the atmosphere and vibe reminiscent of the original, and tried flipping tracks from all of her albums. This was like my 4th attempt at and it was by far my favourite, definitely a chilled vibe to calmly reflect on the classic track that I'm remixing. I put it at the start of the album for that reason, wanted to gradually build into the rest of the project which had higher energy and a bigger focus on celebrating DOOM. Hope people enjoy this one as it's own track!

This is one of my favourites from the album - the original is one of my all time favourite tracks, so I was very happy with how this remix turned out. Ive always loved how grimey the verses are, and I wanted to emphasise that with the beat. Didn't want to try and re-do a grimey piano beat for this though, instead went for a grand sort of vibe with strings and some crazy echoing keys, I was gassed with how it turned out. Also wanted the bass to hit hard on this so I added some extra layers to make sections of the verses hit harder. Had to chop up the same iconic 'get out of my life woman drums', and went all out as always when layering them to get that fat sound.

Rarely use the same sample as the original artist, especially for a remix of the same song, but this sample from the SOS Band is such a gem track I knew there were many different directions to take it. I've always loved DOOMs flip, and in recent years have really grown to enjoy the upbeat vibe of the original sample, so I wanted to reach a middle point between the two for my remix. I still slowed down the sample but not as much as DOOM did, and focused on the more upbeat high energy sections of the sample to match that faster BPM. I had a feeling this would work well cause the vocals and verses are so raw with DOOM and Gunn going back to back flowing crazy off of each other, and for sure I felt like the vocals matched that hectic energy perfectly. I also exaggerated that energy in the drums, the chops for the melody already had drums, but I layered extra chops of soloed drums from breaks in the track, making the kicks hit harder and adding punch to the snare, even added in snare rolls to further that energy. 

This was also one of those beats that was very effortless to make, the whole process went smoothly cause I knew exactly what I wanted to flip and layer, always nice to go into beats with that level of focus.

I was really happy with the change in vibe for this beat, even though it's from a Soul/Funk sample I took these synth chops to make a very chilled almost video game sounding beat. The layering levelled this one up for me, added a lot more atmosphere and weight to the soundscape especially on the low end, and also gave the track more variation. Again the original by DOOM is so iconic and a real classic, so I didnt want to do anything similar. That is one of DOOM's most soulful beats I think, so I went for this more synth/electronic vibe on the sample instead, even though this is taken from a soul song. I thought it fit the lighthearted feel of this track, and managed to chop the acapella to get the beatboxing on beat with the drums. Went for that bouncy vibe on the drum groove here to match the flows of the melody, wanted this to be a track you can chill/zone out to, with some emotive elements to the sample too especially the layering.

Another personal favourite of mine from the album, this was the first beat I made after deciding on doing a full album of DOOM remixes. It was also the first beat I made after having my last day at my old job, so I think that definitely impacted the choice of sample, chops, flip etc. What I like most about this one is the emotion, and how the different flips I got out of the sample transition into each other, varying in levels of emotion and giving the track a real sense of a journey to it. I thought it was a good fit with the autumnal vibes of the vocals from DOOM, and also fits the abstract storytelling of his verse. Overall just really happy with how this one turned out as a remix, Red and Gold was not a track I was certain I was going to remix for this project, but the way it went over this beat was perfect and I was very excited to include it.

I actually made this track ages ago, over a year now, and never released it cause I thought it would be nice as an interlude for a longer project. This beat has always been one of my favourites, it was a very complex flip where I focused on the bassline and had to take chops from all over the place. The thing I like the most about this track is how smooth DOOM's flow is, it's effortless and fits that smooth flow of this beat.

This was the last track I made for the album, I was really immersed and in the flow of things at that point. Was such a great sample I knew I had to flip it, Sade really came through in spades and is all over this album, which was fitting I thought given how it's well-known that DOOM was a big fan of Sade. I also considered using this beat as the remix for Rhymes Like Dimes, but it fit so well with Potholderz, especially going back and forth with the different flips, isolating the bassline to then bring back the sample just worked well with the structure of Potholderz. Also the drums were the perfect fit to both DOOM and Count Bass D's flow, so I knew it was the right one to remix. I did have to pitch up the acapella slightly so that the hints of the guitar from the original would match the pitch and key of the sample I flipped, but it's not too noticeable and actually made the voices fit the atmosphere and tone of the beat better I thought. Hope people enjoy this one, definitely another favourite of mine from the project.

I knew this beat had to be included on the project, originally I was going to re work this remix of Gazillion Ear, but I thought it would work better as a break in between tracks, and would be perfect for one of DOOM's classic interludes. My all time favourite interlude from him is definitely The Hands of Doom, so I wanted to make that standout and put it over this beat, very different to the original.

This was a really complex flip, defo one that took a while to work out, it ended up being very choppy. I've always wanted to remix this track, luckily I was able to isolate the vocals without too many problems, it's always been such an interesting track to me with DOOM singing at the start, and also being relatively short. Very abstract verses too, hope people enjoy my take on it!

Nice that it worked out that this drops so close to Christmas, this sample is tied to that time for obvious reasons. Still one of my favourite beats I've made, thought it was a good fit for the nature of this outro, bringing the album largely to a close, before switching up for the final 'bonus track'. As soon as I put this beat over Hero Vs Villain I knew I had to use the switch up into the darker flip to have one last remix, and was very happy with how that last track turned out.

This was the last remix I added to this album, as soon as I worked out the tracklisting with Hero vs Villain being the last track, I knew that I had to use the switch up to that beat in some way. I had a feeling Rhymes Like Dimes would fit it, the flow from DOOM is so so rugged and I thought it would fit the first beat well, DOOM is really showcasing his skills here in such a dope way so I liked how the first beat keeps it simple and draws the focus to that ill flow. However I didn't want to end the album on that kind of vibe, and new I had to switch the beat up for a more positive one to end the album on. Luckily DOOM's acapella was so versatile and playful so it really fit the change in beat, cause although he's showcasing skills it's also a fun track. This worked well with the outro from Bobbito, I thought it was a nice wholesome way to end the album on a real positive note. 

On that note I can't believe it's the end of the year, so much has happened, dropped my debut EP, hit 1K subscribers on YouTube, made the Crime Side Album and this DOOM Album. Next Sunday is New Years Day so I'll be making sure to start off the year right with a remix, set on matching this years level and hopefully exceeding it in the year ahead.
