Here’s the recording of my eclectic DJ set from Friday evening at Monument Festival 2024. Played during a golden sunset on a warm, beautiful Norwegian summer night in early August, the vibe was pure magic. This set blends dubby deep house, rominimal, house, and tech house — a journey through grooves and textures tailored for that perfect transition from day to night.

For this set I played on 4 CDJ 3000’s and a V10 mixer, using both of its internal effects processors. For every No Way Back set, and for most sets, I try to prepare new hardware remasters and edits of things that I think would be fascinating recontextualized in this setting. But for NWB, it is even more special, a peak moment, so I try to have new records I’m working on in the studio to test out. For this set that means the hardware mixes I’ve been working on for Torrvo and for Andy Toth can be tested, I’m working on this hardware mixing and remastering tone palate, so I spread that to some edits to give them a whole new power. Playing at No Way Back cannot be put into words, though we try every year, it really is inexplicable without experiencing it. It’s the environment you most want to be in, the space is totally transformed, the sound is dialed in, the audience is so ready, very giving and open, and the feedback you get is incredible. People are up for a ride – we start at the Tangent and end up going to the other side of the universe. Freedom within and without. There’s no place I’d rather be, so I thought I’d share this much sooner than we usually do. Enjoy the ride.

We’ve been big fans of Israel Vines ever since hearing him play out in LA warehouses some 15+ years ago. A true veteran of the US underground, Israel spent his formative rave years in Detroit and Chicago in the early 90’s - where he worked at the legendary Gramaphone Records - before going on to become the distinguished producer/DJ we know him as today, with releases on Tresor, Semantica, Cult Figures, and Eye Teeth (sub-label of Detroit’s own @ithqdetroit ).

Both Israel’s productions and sets reveal his encyclopedic knowledge of, and a deep love for, abstract electronic music - always carrying his signature heady sound and flair for bold artistic expression. Israel has played for us several times before at @gradientcampout and other collabs with our homies eternal @printshop.club ❤️ We're thrilled and honored to have his contribution to Palm Reader, our series dedicated to ambient and experimental for wayfinding in stillness. This mix was recorded live at our Palm Reader label preview night (!) on Friday, June 13th, indoors at Plata in Silver Lake. Dubwise atmospherics flood Guy Brewer's third RA Mix.

Hear the word "Dionysus" and you picture the Greek god of ecstasy: overflowing tables, delirious revelry, chaos. Not the austere soundworld of Guy Brewer, AKA Carrier. On the surface, the UK artist's latest alias feels almost Spartan. But look closer and the Dionysian link starts to show:  it's about shedding fixed forms and identities, to allow something more true, more alive, to form. 

RA.1011 marks Brewer's third entry in the RA Mix series, following editions as drum & bass outfit Commix (RA.269) and, later, the techno alias Shifted (RA.310). "I guess it's an effort to step away from purism," Brewer told <i>Resident Advisor</i> back in 2023. "Right now the thresholds between genres are where you find the most exciting music." 

Carrier's phenomenal debut album, <i>Rhythm Immortal</i>, delivers on that promise. Low-end pressure cloaks like foreboding shadows, punctured only by eerie, otherworldly percussion comparable only to Photek or T++. Listen to the LP in full and it feels like walking through a scene in a true-crime drama: a fog-drenched city street in the deep of night, ambushed by gusts of wind, whispers and strange noises—and it sounds totally, utterly original.

Tracing a line through dub pressure, fractured percussion and narcotic ambience, Brewer explores that same world on RA.1011. As with the album, there's a primal pulse that threads through the recording. Walls of negative space seem to hover before dissolving inexplicably, their tension intact; drums move more like the weather than rhythm. - Bella Aquilina
