The avalanche of coverage and inclusion of Burt Bacharach's work into popular culture and classic reference should be of little surprise to anyone. Bacharach's rich catalog continues to garner a groundswell of worship from generation to generation and it was only a matter of time before the magic made it's way to the drum corps performance arena. The 2011 Blue Devils present a rich, and long overdue look into the mastery of Burt Bacharach's music.

The Beat My Heart Skipped

Doublebeat 9000 is an ostinato-based jammy jam for the groovy drumline. Its inherent challenges lie in the nonstop repetition of swing-style 16th notes for the snares, melodic-based diddle patterns for the tenors, and bottom feeder running lines for the basses. This piece could be a cadence, a stadium groove, or simply something for after school.

From the mind of Murray comes another vehicle of danceable battery music for the drumline consumer—BUCKLE UP FOR SAFETY!

Doublebeat 9000 (Murray Gusseck)

This 60-second warmup was heard played by the Santa Clara Vanguard drumline in 2002 and written by David Reeves as a tribute to drum corps icon Ralph Hardimon, who shaped much of what people know today as the SCV percussion sound. Ralph Speak is a rhythmically complex piece which requires both chops and finesse to perform. For drumlines with brains and brawn, this piece is sure to lay it on the line!

Spanks presents a groove challenge for any drumline. Written and designed by Murray Gusseck for the championship 2004 Santa Clara Vanguard drumline, this exercise is 3 minutes of groove-oriented single and double-stroke patterns that are designed to challenge not only the players' sense of time, but also the finer fulcrum muscles of their hands.

Available by popular request! Spice Mon was written for the 1993 SCV Cadets drumline, and has been more recently heard as a popular demo for the innovative Virtual Drumline sample library. This cadence will be the perfect appetizer to spice up your drumline's menu, get the band marching, and the crowd dancing.

Where's Flores? is the latest drumline concoction from the innovative mind of Murray Gusseck. Inspired by various West African and Afro-Cuban styles, the piece is up, down, and all-around outside the box. It's scored for a full battery, including cymbals, as well as a solo tenor 'quinto' player. The multiple layers of time create a very demanding but groovy people mover. The title points to funky bay area drummer, teacher, and recording artist David Flores. The answer to the title's question is right here! Watch for performances of Where's Flores this summer in a parking lot near you.
