This week on FMB Mixtape Series, we’re happy to welcome the vinyl-only DJ & music producer, Tarkno, hailing from Australia. As always, we first caught up to find out more about the mix & what he’s been up to lately…

I am currently getting ready to head back on tour in Europe and play some exciting events. This means a lot of packing, organizing and planning has been taking place.

The mix was actually recorded back in my home studio, in Melbourne, Australia during my holiday break. This gave me access to my entire record collection, so I made sure to select some hidden gems that hadn’t made their way into my bag yet. 

The idea for this mix was to play strictly old school tools from my personal collection. All of the records resonate deeply with me, embodying the true sound of underground techno. While the mix has a consistent theme I made sure to include a few staple tracks that I have enjoyed playing out recently.

Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity and deep reverence for the pioneers of electronic music, Tarkno embodies true techno culture through vinyl-only sets. Employing the use of several turntables in esteemed venues across the globe, his versatility pays homage to decades of forward-facing machine music.

Upcoming highlights include my own all night long in London later this year, as well as an Australian tour, as I return home to headline 'closer' festival.

Awakenings Podcast S321 - Tarkno

Hailing from Australia and now based in Berlin, DJ and producer TARKNO embraces the authenticity of Techno with his groove-centric, vinyl-only sets. The Aussie has been making waves around the globe, playing in cities such as Tokyo, Amsterdam and London and at venues such as RSO, Tresor and Radion. TARKNO has also showcased his mastery of the decks during all-night long sets at Watergate in Berlin and London’s Venue MOT. 

Throughout his mixes, TARKNO delivers high-speed, high-intensity Hardgroove and Tribal/Samba Techno, often laced with unique vocal samples. His knack for sampling in production enables him to transform tracks so thoroughly that the original track becomes unidentifiable. This podcast is up-tempo, rhythmic and banging with seamless transitions.

Marcel Fengler's IMF label kicks off 2025 by unifying different generations on `The Past Voices EP'. It arrives on 7th February and features much-anticipated debut tracks from Tarkno alongside fellow new school talent The Sixth Sense who also goes solo on the flip while veteran Stigmata remixes. Remixer André Walter aka Stigmata has helped to define the techno underground since the 90s with several different projects. His signature sound is often deep and heavy and has come on serious techno labels for decades.

First up the pair offer the muscular bounce of 'Past Voices' with rattling percussive grooves, dusty drums and tunnelling synths that drive on with inescapable force. Frenzy ventures deeper into the night with Tarkno’s After Hours EP (FRNZYREC011), a six-track journey of tension, drive, and subtle reflection. From the start, the EP pulls the listener into a nocturnal world where momentum and mood shift effortlessly, guiding the night forward with precision.

Deadline begins the journey with a commanding push, sharp percussion and rising intensity setting a restless pace. Anxious builds on that tension, darker and more introspective, its patterns fractured yet deliberate. Jacobworld’s remix then takes the track in a different direction, stripping it down to relentless techno energy, where pressure and precision become the story.

As the night evolves, Morning Drive introduces a reflective pause, textures softening and momentum balancing between calm and urgency.
