Bassist, drummer and Agile Experiments bandleader Dave De Rose returns with a brand new project for 2023, called Rave At Your Fictional Borders. To introduce the new group, he has shared an exciting video edit capturing a live performance named “National Phantom”, due for release on March 9th.

This video captures a studio session from the Athens-based band’s second recording day, which went down at Electricity Sound Studio in Athens, Greece in January 2023.

The brand new ‘Rave At Your Fictional Borders’ grouping follows a long and impressive run of releases by Dave De Rose’s Agile Experiments. This new project takes inspiration from its predecessor's improvisational and avant-garde approach, but explores new territory by incorporating ambient, noise, and techno elements. This comes at a time when people are increasingly tired of outdated ideas like territorial control and elitist systems.

"National Phantom EP", a two-track release from the second day of recording, is dropping on March 9th, 2023. The EP includes live performance videos and a free digital download. For the vinyl collectors, there's a limited edition 10" lathe cut version, hand-pressed by LoFi Concept. Keep an eye out for more music from the project - the rest of the recordings will be released on their full-length LP in early 2024, along with additional EPs featuring different musicians.

Dave De Rose tells us, “I've been harvesting this project for over two years, some of that just in my head. Last year it finally started to come together while playing a lot with Marius Mathiszik and various combinations of fantastic sound artists in Athens. The project has a more narrow improvisation concept than Agile Experiments, we are blending the realms of dance-inducing repetition with avant-garde, ambient and techno, occasionally dabbling with an aggressive punk edge. It's been a refreshing experience to witness the project's output getting stronger and stronger over the year and just like with Agile Experiments, it's the musicians we've recruited bringing their own flavor to the band's sound that has made it become its own unique blend. Very excited to share these videos and the next 3 releases taking us all the way into 2024!!

MIMS presents the exclusive premiere of “Autumn 2021” by underground hip hop producer and LA beat scene pioneer, Free The Robots. The track is a fresh drum-laden rework of Italian library classic, “Autumn 2001”, by Italian jazz pianist and electronic music pioneer Gianni Safred, and is forthcoming on Four Flies Records.

Four Flies Records, a Rome-based label, has been at the forefront of rescuing vintage Italian soundtracks and library music since its launch in 2015. They have rediscovered and made available previously unreleased or lesser-known music by renowned Italian composers such as Piero Umiliani, Alessandro Alessandroni, Giuliano Sorgini, and Silvano D’Auria, among others. These findings have made their way into the homes of record collectors, as well as the wider public, including on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and TV shows like Good Girls and Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

With the recent release of Piero Umiliani’s ‘Discomania (Jolly Mare Lifting)’, Four Flies Records has launched RELOVED, a vinyl series where contemporary DJs and producers rework tunes from Italian golden age soundtracks and library music. The aim of the series is to spark a conversation between past, present, and future, joining the dots between Italy’s great film and library-music tradition and a global scene of forward-thinking producers.

The 7” releases are co-curated by fellow independent label Little Beat More, who stated, “We're giving new life to music from some of the greatest Italian composers of the past. It's all about sampling, and that's why we decided to involve not only electronic producers but also highly talented beat makers, and we decided to focus mostly on the 7-inch format which is so popular among hip hop lovers. It's a project with no boundaries. The producers and beat-makers involved come from all over the globe.”

The first release in this series is the 7” ‘Autumn 2001 / Autumn 2021,’ with an original track from Italian jazz pianist and electronic music pioneer Gianni Safred and a rework from musician, DJ, and beatmaker Free The Robots. Free The Robots said about the release: "The sounds used back in the 60's and 70's are partly where I model my own sound and many Italian bands from the era played a big role in the inspiration of my music. To add to the narrative is really just the continued preservation of classic sounds, re-told and flipped in my own way as a producer of this era. My take on Autumn 2001 was more a drum heavy, loopy and spaced out approach to the original song".

Chris Alfaro, aka Free the Robots, is one of the key figures of the West Coast experimental beats scene, a movement that has changed beat making globally, and forever. He is a musician, beatmaker, and DJ known for his ability to jump in and out of different sonic worlds, creating a unique signature sound blending electronic, hip hop, jazz, and psychedelia. His free-flowing imagination keeps his productions constantly moving forward – away from robotic monotony, ultimately freeing the robots. He continues to build his lineup of original recordings in unpredictable directions. The energy and technical skill behind his live performances have landed him a place among the greats, sharing stages with the likes of Flying Lotus, DJ Shadow, and DJ Krush.

Both the 7” vinyl and digital editions of ‘Autumn 2021 / Autumn 2001’ are due for release on 31 March on Four Flies Records.

Phuture Shock Musik keeps it moving with No. 5 in their limited dubplate series, which sees deep house titan Trinidadian Deep return to the Bristol imprint with a 2-track juggernaut of  percussion-heavy riddims and mystical frequencies; entitled ‘Jah Fe Movements’ b/w ‘Casa Profunda’. 

Picking up where he last left off on PSM; with 2021’s ‘Dub Rockas’ EP, and following a recent remix for label mate Rosie From The Block, the NYC-based producer delivers a sure-fire pair of secret weapons, that once again captures his inimitable brand of deeply spiritual house music, with a typically rich medley of African, Caribbean and Latin influences oozing throughout.

Fronting the A-Side is the meditative vibes of ‘Jah Fe Movements’ a tech-infused heater for the late-nighters, where driving 4/4 kicks and frenzied percussion charge forth in unison with an entrancing keyboard riff, largely engulfed by a smoky haze of livity chants and bubbling dubtronic tones immersed in reverb and delay. On the flip is the uplifting, Afro-Latin-flavoured rhythms of ‘Casa Profunda’, which by contrast is a more sky-facing affair but no less aimed at the dancefloor as the lead cut, awash with breezy, euphoric pads and jazzy sax licks, that meander between sultry Latina vocals hovering over percussion-fuelled beats and a rolling bass groove with a tropical bounce.

In striking daubs of bled-out colour and finely sculpted layers of instrumentation, Lord of the Magi arrives on Tartelet Archives with an album of ambient reflections.

Copenhagen-based Theo Nicola Anker has different sides to his musical output. But on Soul Exchange, he shakes off stylistic concerns to focus on a purer emotional expression. It’s an instinctive paean to the pastoral life he grew up with, sent with love from his city-centre apartment. His chosen tools – guitars, pedals, synths – are the medium of the message.

“I appreciate music with personality, character, and charisma,” Anker says, “so I always strive to create tracks that tell a story and evoke a specific atmosphere. No single idea for a track is solely melodic, rhythmic, compositional, or focused on mix techniques. It's always about the bigger picture, the overall vibe.”

Earlier works under the name Paxton Fettel appeared on labels like Great Cottage Workshop, where you could spy his affinity for jazzy musicianship and atmospheric pools of ambient production. On Soul Exchange, the dominant swathes of soft-attack and slow-release chords can be intercepted by pointed flurries of guitar, or even the sparse hiccup of a kick-shaped percussive pulse. From piece to piece, a different story is told – the result of Anker’s investigations into beatless production, manifested as a cohesive body of work.

On Soul Exchange, the overarching mood is an inviting, becalming one, but there’s plenty of space for melancholy and even a little friction. That’s apparent in the natural synergy of the organic and electronic elements as much as the emotional content, rounding out as a wholesome, holistic listening experience.

“The album is a reflection and projection of emotions, thoughts, and feelings experienced during a challenging time,” Anker explains. “It embodies the process of going through difficulties and coming out on the other side, embracing change.”

The exquisite detail of the album comes through in abundance on the lead single ‘Él Es Deê’, which teases its psychedelic leanings in shifting sands of oscillating pads in the middle distance, and a panoply of pointed melodic figures dancing up front. It’s vivid and teeming with energy even as it intones a pervasive calm.

Limited to 150 copies and only available in select shops, the LP comes in a specially designed sleeve that folds out into an A1-size poster designed by a Hamburg-based design agency Bareis-Nicolaus. Out October 13 on LP and digital.
