Core Memories - Inspired by Inside Out

Here's my submission for Tom Holkenborg's #NowScoreThis - Black Mass competition. He asked: "What theme would you have written for James "Whitey" Bulger from Black Mass? Crossing The Border

Ever since watching the first episode of An Idiot Abroad back in 2010, I've been listening to and loving Vik Sharma's beautiful, yet wondrous music for the series. I think it portrays what is going on inside Karl's mind at these moments so well, that I've been wanting to give it a try myself. Now, Karl has finished 3 series of An Idiot Abroad, and now he's on The Moaning Of Life 2. This is now the time for me to give myself the challenge. I believe I have written something quite fitting, with some of the original mood written by Vik, with my own personal touches too. I hope you enjoy!

'Bank Heist' - Triple 9 [Original Movie Cue]

Having never seen any of the Divergent movies or read the book series, I went into this one completely blindfolded. The only thing I have heard from the original score by Joseph Trapanese is the in the end credits; and this is only because I work at a cinema.

I wanted to act like I'd been handed Allegiant as a composer. And so I watched clips of the movie. Several times over. Then I wrote some music. This is what came out of the whole experience.

'Norman Blacks Out' - Bates Motel: Season 2 [Original Music]

Ever since first playing Telltale Games' The Walking Dead, I've had a strong love for Jared Emerson-Johnson's gut-wrenching theme.
Nothing will top the original, but for years I've wanted to recreate the theme and see how it turns out. I did this by ear, so there may be some slight differences. Nevertheless, it was a nice bit of practice!

'City Holograms' - Ghost in the Shell [Original Movie Cue]

Jed Kurzel's score for Assassin's Creed wasn't my favourite, I'll be honest. But, the main introductory theme that plays as the film opens is simply brilliant. Today, I decided to delve into the mind of Kurzel and have a crack at recreating 'Young Cal' - the first track on the soundtrack album. It sounds simple, but make no mistake, Kurzel's style is hard to replicate. This took a LOT of time with volume automation and subtle EQ edits to get it sounding *about* right. It won't be perfect, but as always it was a fun learning experience.

From the ground upwards, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an undeniably beautiful and magical world. Jeremy Soule's music is a key part of the wonderful experience you have; venturing through the towns, forests, mountains and caves. I wanted to try writing in his style, with soft strings and lush movements of air, as if the music is breathing. Hopefully, you can enjoy this track I wrote, greatly inspired by the vast forests available in the game.

I'm Not Ashamed

Inspired by the promotional material for Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk,' I decided to utilise Zimmer's "ticking" approach, by recording my own clock and sampling it into a track. Introducing the piece, and following through until the end, are some woodwind movements that I have heavily edited to sound like fighter planes flying over the beaches. The intense piece then comes to a sudden end filled with nothing but silence.

A track I wrote immediately after I watched Denzel Washington's movie 'Fences.' I've always admired the subtle scores in dramas; piano/string-driven, mostly going unnoticed. I wanted to write something very subtle, like Marcelo Zarvos' work in the film.

'1950s Pittsburgh' - Fences [Original Music]

Although I don't always enjoy action films, I liked Michael Bay's '13 Hours' and Lorne Balfe's music that accompanied it. It's pretty much solid action the whole way through, yet there's a strong emotional core in the centre of it all. I also enjoy fast-paced action scores, so I finally decided to give it a GOOD try. I really put time into this one. The volume automation took hours, but it was worth it. Really brings the brass and string sections to life.

'Annex Rooftops' - 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi [Original Music]

Martin Scorsese's 'Silence' is a beautifully crafted masterpiece. It may not be for everybody - religious or not (I'm the latter) - but it's wonderfully captured, acted and directed, and a thought-provoking experience you simply won't forget.

Here's some ambient music I wrote after watching the film. I think there may be more to come. I have a lot to say, musically.

'In The Silence, I Hear Your Voice' - Silence [Original Music]

Haven't done one of these in a while, so here's my second entry to the 60 Minute Challenge; in which you write, record and (briefly) mix a track. I went a little further than this and also excluded the use of external equipment such as a MIDI keyboard and headphones. This track was literally written with Logic Pro X on a MacBook. Nothing else. I threw in the rain for ambience, I guess.
