The evolution continues...as does the rain!

Opening night at Wonky Town was a vibe and a half, the space was a wonderland begging everyone to come play full to the brim with games, interactive installations, a cosy lamp lit lounge and all sorts of other shenanigans 

It was an honour and a privilege to play on a purpose built stage compliments of the festival and Fulcrum Designs in lieu of Sheila no longer being with us - May she forever rest in bass...

Also worth noting for full transparency and celebration of my musical journey that it was my first time performing live directly on the decks sans laptop and controller which was a whole new world in terms of convenience but all wrapped up in the kinda nerves I thought were behind me

Looking forward to continuing the learning process, experimenting with the weaving and manipulating of sound drawing inspiration from those in the know around me and as always with the highest level of gratitude and respect for the original creators

Love. What does it mean to you? There is a vast spectrum of how we experience love, perceive it, feel it, express it, and create it. During the month of February, I played two sets right around Valentine’s Day that had me organizing all my “love music.” I started to think about  all that love means to me. I noticed that in recent years, I’ve found myself searching for love in the form of a romantic relationship. Searching for a person who wants to receive my love and travel with me on this journey of life. With all that has passed, I’ve often thought, what can I do differently, what can I do better, what is it about me that is too much or not enough? In the midst of my reflections, I happened to come across the following quote by feminist writer, teacher, activist, and scholar Bell Hooks. She says, “I think that part of what a culture of domination has done is raise that romantic relationship up as the single most important bond, when of course the single most important bond is that of community.” It resonated with me so profoundly that I read it out while introducing myself before one of my sets. It made me more cognizant of the fact that the unending support of my community is what has carried me through the empty valleys of the lows. All that I am, all that I have, all that I can be, is rooted in community. I’m so grateful for all of you who are part of my life and continue to invest your time and energy into our relationship. It has been a hard last 6 months. With work causing me to retreat from my usual relationships, I have felt like an absent friend to many. A friend who hasn’t shown up isn’t who I want to be, and it hasn’t felt good. Nevertheless, I feel you. I get your messages of support. I know you are there for me even when I’m not able to be there for you, and that is so appreciated. While my community has carried me through my lows, you’ve also lifted me up to my highest highs. The collective joy we create on the dance floor is absolutely incredible. Bell Hooks writes in All About Love: New Visions, “whether we learn how to love ourselves and others will depend on the presence of a loving environment. Self-love cannot flourish in isolation,” and in a separate passage, “rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” I wouldn't know how to love all parts of myself and others if it wasn’t for the loving environment that I am supported by. This community propels me to love more, to be love, and to embody it in my everyday interactions. I heal when I am with you. This last quote by Hooks is a reminder of how I can continue to grow my practice of love in my life and expand my notion of community. “We can begin the process of making community wherever we are. We can begin by sharing a smile, a warm greeting, a bit of conversation; by doing a kind deed or by acknowledging kindness offered to us. Doing this, we engage in love practice [... and] we lay the foundation for the building of community with strangers. The love we make in community stays with us wherever we go. With this knowledge as our guide, we make any place we go, a place where we return to love.” This mix is a dedication to you, my community. My best friends. My family. My loves. Morning Mojo, a much anticipated maiden voyage collaboration for The Shady Lady and Blossom Medusa merging their shared love and devotion to Meditation, Yoga, Music, Dance and Tea giving the people what they so desperately need by day three...a cuppa, a spangle informed stretch sesh and a thoughtfully designed soundscape to ease everyone into their day.

We were also so so spoilt on the day to have Cecilia Caleandro join us for the last portion of the set winding everything down to an eventual Sivasana Serenade with ethereal vocals, harp and flute leaving us all in the floatiest of moods. Alas this was not captured and stored as a recording on the day but the memory will stay with all who were there to behold.

The first and last chunk of this set is best enjoyed taking it easy in a cosy, comfortable position with soft or even closed eyes if that’s something that feels good for you then allow the music to be the guide. The pace rises and falls again with many worthwhile messages to be absorbed throughout and a Hare Krishna/Coolio remix you probably didn't know you needed!

The tracks selected were already well and truly adored by at least one or both of us but now have found themselves etched even deeper into our souls and psyches, destined to always be treasured and remembered together as though they belong. The beauty of sharing this home recording in lieu of the live set is that it gave me the ability to leave a number of tracks intact with their original flow and integrity rather than slicing, dicing or skipping along to squeeze everything into my allocated time slot. 

On that note, ran out of time to play the final track I had hoped but it is so so beautiful and fitting to the event i've chosen to include it in hopes it still reaches the ears of who might need to hear it <3

Never Stop Dancing is a mix series dedicated to all those who find themselves locked in the groove, time and time again. To those who find themselves eyes closed, lost in the music. To those who say "one more song" more than once. To those who live for the collective joy, community, and boundless self-expression of the dance floor. To those who never stop dancing. This mix series is focused on amplifying the sounds of DJs and producers in the Kootenays and British Columbia who honour the rich tradition of house, disco, and techno in their sets.

Never Stop Dancing 12 is a playful mix by none other than Kootenay veteran, mother, and all around wonderful human, Lady V. Lady V has been a staple of the Kootenay underground scene for many years. Her signature chugging yet driving sound consistently captivates dancers, locking them in a deep, bouncy, hypnotic groove for hours on end. Many moons ago, I stumbled across Lady V playing a set at my favourite stage in the Kootenays, and thought to myself, “this is it – this is the place.” Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Lady V, and have grown an appreciation for her humility, kindness, and passion for her tasteful, slow-house sonic journeys. Her selections always transport me back to the blissed out mornings at the open airs in Köln. Her Never Stop Dancing mix is a seamless, groove-laden journey that’ll have you wanting more. Enjoy!

This mix is the sound of spring and the changes it brings. Holding onto the highs, the trebles, the tweaks and the whimsy. In a world that seems intent on getting smaller I cherish the flavours and colours from far and wide. As our spring rains fall they draw me outwards to a place of light and hope. Still holding on to the steady rhythms of the deep months that are almost behind us, those deeper tech beats that I’m always drawn to still remain. Memories drawn from old tracks made new ..
