Live @ Nevada City E Dance // 12.12.23

Tonight is our third Ecstatic Dance Cobourg event, and as it is January, I felt that it would be meaningful to balance gentleness with space to shake and move all the pent-up feelings that can come from the holidays, and the expectations January may bring. In this dance we explore the beauty of the dark undercurrents inherent to human life, and rather than suppressing these more sombre feelings, as we might usually do, we make them into our treasured dance partners.

This time, we had to make the switch to dance on Zoom due to a major snowstorm. I am choosing to envision our whirling around with the wind and the snowflakes...and it was such a beautiful group, tonight ❤️❤️❤️

Dance Church Revival {Ecstatic Maui Dance Mix by MIKAYA}

Description: An ecstatic dance designed to explore the nonlinear and sometimes painful path toward self-love, this set meets people in their sadness and doubt, shows them glimpses of the joy, togetherness, and spiritual meaning for which they are searching (“Look For Light,” “Brighter Days,” “We All Move Together,” “Above My Head” – a song which reminds them, “You have no choice but to find your feet”), and then plunges them deeply into their beautiful, sensual and ferocious shadows (“Empowerment,” “Levent-Ozbay,” “Karuneshh”) before catapulting them into a retrieval of their self-love. In this set, dancers will be encouraged to view all love songs as songs about themselves (the “I” and the “you” are both parts of the self). The process of self-love retrieval is complex; it is sometimes impossible (“Living”), sometimes ambivalent (“In & Out”), sometimes deeply heartfelt (“Beautiful,” “I Found You”), and sometimes joyful (“Alright”)…and always worthwhile.

The sunrises in the desert are something extremely special and even more so when I had the privilege of DJ'ing for the first time at Burning Man ~ at one of the most unique places and experiences on earth - on the sound art car, Rexan, a "burnified" South Arican double decker Safari jeep from the Sundowners Burning Man camp. This set is actually re-recorded since in true dusty fashion - you never know what can happen, the set did not record. So here it is re-created for your listening pleasure. In dust we trust, except... when it comes to digital sound recording equipment. Dreaming of that glorious morning with you all. Until next time....

Special note: as I re-recorded this set, I at times, closed my eyes and transported myself back to the desert....and the feeling of forgiveness came to me. For my eldest brother Steve who has not spoken to me in over 20 years. I forgive you; I forgive myself and I "pray to see the day" where there will be different "versions of ourselves", able to meet each other with grace, love and forgiveness. You deserve that and so do I. Freedom.  Life is way too short to hope for anything else.
