For The Spring To Come

Camera Magmatica co-founder Prg/m and fellow Italian artist Neel come together for Mirabilis, a new EP that fuses ambient tones and techno flavours. Five tracks come on the vinyl 12", plus two digital bonuses.

Camera Magmatica calls back on board Neel, after the experimental outing cassette he curated some years ago. He is of course a revered sonic sculptor who works as one-half of Voices From the Lake on labels like Token Records, Spazio Disponibile and Spectrum Spools. He ended 2022 on a high with his EP The 808 Archive on Non-Series, and now continues that form in 2023. Prg/m, meanwhile, is a musician, live act and multimedia artist who also has a highly crafted sound that is rich in immersive pads and deconstructed rhythms. As well as working solo, he has collaborated as r²π with his label co-founders Retina.it and Ruhig while also releasing on Semantica, Midgar and Concrete Rec amongst others.

This new EP continues the Napoli Arcana vinyl series and pays homage to the mystic Neapolitan region. Mirabilis in particular is dedicated to the Piscina Mirabilis site that was constructed in the 1st century AD when Augustus was Emperor. It was an enormous reservoir at the end of the Aqua Augusta or Aqueduct of August and it provided drinking water for Naples and the Roman fleet.

'Idra' opens up in a cavern with water droplets and sonic ripples sketching out the vast size of the space. Atmospheric drones make for an increasingly heavy atmosphere as deep sub bass moves things forwards and spoken word snippets arrive with thoughts on climate change. 'Priapo' immediately sinks you into a deep and weighty techno rhythm that is loopy, organic and hypnotic in equal measure. It's sparse yet tense and leads into 'Misenensis' (Neel Version), an edgy sound world where unresolved drum loops rock backward and forwards with ambient pads and icy sounds layered to eerie effect. 'Mitra' is another smooth, heady techno rhythm that suspends you in space and time and 'Mirabilis' resets with two minutes of ambient that sounds like it was recorded at the earth's core with molten lava slowly flowing all around you.

The digital-only track 'Misenensis' (PRGM Version) is rubbery techno with gloopy drums and bass, pulsing synths. It builds with the tension of approaching danger as if an eruption is just about to come, then the second digital cut 'Leone' carries you away on another wave of serene and cerebral techno that is brought to life deft sound design.

This is an artful exploration of high-concept techno that works as well up close on headphones as it does in a darkened club space.

CM002 Neel & Prg/M - Mirabilis Ep [snippets]

With great delight, we welcome to our premiere section Slak's newest track Under Control, from Lab's upcoming Patience EP. This shared release with Datafive will officially be in stores in vinyl and digital format on March 1st, while it is already available for pre-purchase via the label's Bandcamp. The track, which consists of hyped-up, prancing beats with futuristically groovy drives, dunks and scours the veins of the UK's broken-techno golden currents. Urban, metropolitan vibrations carve an upbeat path to a suburban warehouse, promising a low-light dancefloor to make oneself feel at "home". Once reaching that destination, the stylized, darkened patterns and fissuring breaks conjoin in a continuous, mild, and dance-oriented loop for some rewardingly expressive moments behind the big garage doors.

To relaunch his seminal imprint, Infrastructure New York, Function presents his new 12", Green EP. Celebrating 27 years of Function releases this year and the label’s 25th anniversary, the label will serve as an outlet for his new material, reissues of out of print classics from Synewave, Sandwell District and Ostgut Ton (and of course, Infrastructure), as well as developing new artists and launching a long awaited Bandcamp page - exploring the annals of nearly 30 years of the Function sound. No doubt fans will be excited.
As a member of the Sandwell District collective, David Sumner aka Function, from 2007 onward was instrumental in cultivating and ushering in a new sound of dark, cerebral hypnotica - forcing the hand of change in global techno. Green EP serves as a testament to this, further exploring these depths. The EP pays homage to the day when David arrived in Berlin with his green suitcase where his record “Isolation” on Sandwell District was released, hitting the ground running and springboarding into an incredibly successful career, becoming a stalwart DJ/producer, after years as a struggling artist.

Green EP encapsulates the same raw power and hypnotic energy of his genre defining Sandwell District releases Isolation, Anticipation and Variance, updated with a modern flair. Subject f (Function) has clearly transcended, as expressed through the opening track “Initiation” arriving at his “New Designation”. On the b-side Function communicates his divine alignment through the broken beat, etheric “Aeternum (Meridian)”. Finally, Function closes Green EP with a live extraction of “Desire and Memory”, a brooding club stormer in contrast to the more experimental leanings of the original version, which appeared on Rrose’s label Eaux. One thing is clear: Function is back on track and more on form than ever!

Fabrizio Lapiana returns to his Attic Music label for more well-crafted techno trips, signing his third EP of the year, this time with a remix from renowned sonic sculptor Donato Dozzy.

The cinematic 'Plenilunio' is an ambitious track with a real sense of narrative. A growling bassline builds through wispy sci-fi melodies and smeared pads until kick drums arrive and you take off through the cosmos. The deft details bring the rubbery groove to life as percussion brings more texture and drive so that you end up somewhere very different from where you started. Then comes 'Riflessi' which explores more driving and dynamic moods from the off: the supple drums and rolling kicks lock you in as minimal synth modulations ripple endlessly across the face of the track. It's fluid yet forceful, a deep techno adventure with psychedelic colours forever raining down. 
Remixer and Spazio Disponibile co-founder Donato Dozzy has already assured his legacy. His signature sound is uniquely deep and well crafted with meticulous ambient details and elongated grooves that melt the mind whether working solo or as part of Voices From the Lake. He flips 'Plenilunio' into a kinetic broken beat beauty that flutters like a manic butterfly. Flapping kicks and rugged loops bring the energy while the original's gorgeous melodies twinkle up top like a distant star. 
This is another high-class and cosmic techno exploration from Attic Music.
