The Historic Crown Theatre in Crown Point, Indiana is a Northwest Indiana staple on the town square. Many Region Residents remember some of their first theatre-going experiences at The Crown. Listen to the storied past of The Crown and what the future holds for the landmark. This radio documentary won 24th Annual Indiana Broadcasters Association 2011 Spectrum Award for Best Special Interest and Cultural Programming.

This is a sample of my conversation with Air Force Sgt. Don Taylor, a Northwest Indiana native and radio DJ during the Vietnam War.  Don and I sat down to listen to one of his last recorded shows overseas, and revisit his days overseas from ’69 to ’70.  This is Don’s own real-life version of “Good Morning Vietnam”.  I thank Sgt. Taylor for his service, and his time spent with me.

January 20, 2014 marked the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.  The official King Holiday website, www.MLKday.gov, encourages to use this milestone as an opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service.  The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

In the spirit of this day, Lakeshore Public Radio developed a project to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We recruited a diverse group of 5 students from Merrillville High School.  The students were of different age, race, color, and ethnic backgrounds.  The one thing they do have in common, is they’re all part of the current Merrillville High School Thespian Troupe.

Each of these five students were willing to sit in front of a microphone, and speak the words of Dr. King.

Thanks to Merrillville High School Students – William Akins, Nia Wells, John Irak, Christina Nillson, and Tyreak Thomas.  And, a very special thanks to Mr. Thomas Mackey from the Merrillville High School Thespian Troupe.

Lakeshore Public Radio MLK Day Project

Super Bowl 46, in Indianapolis, is far bigger than the game itself. This epic event starts 9 days before the contest, referred to as, “Super Bowl Week”. There are all kinds of other festivities outside of where the journalists, reporters, and broadcasters gather. Downtown Indy is just a “Hail Mary” pass away from Northwest Indiana, where I live and work. Lakeshore Public Media was granted media credentials, but I decided that I was going to cover it from a fan’s point of view. However, because of the press credentials I was already wearing around my neck, it was pretty easy for me to wander in to areas I probably wasn’t allowed… like “The Dan Patrick Show”. Listen to my adventure, captured in this piece.

Cut me in half and count the rings... For nearly 20 years it has been my pleasure and passion to work in many different aspects of broadcasting. I have worked a variety of positions, wearing multiple hats in different formats of commercial and public radio and television. Music. News. Talk. Sports. I've been in-charge. I've been in front of the crowds. I've been behind the mic. Before I was the man at the desk, I was the man on the street. Not only am I confident in my management, marketing, and on-air talents, but I have all the skills you develop from working in the trenches of broadcasting.
