Dark Spaces

A 25 minute immersive soundscape designed to be looped over the timeframe of Constellations Of Us audio visual installation at Lightwaves, Media City, Salford. 4th -7th December 2025.
An immersive, interactive installation that weaves projection mapping, sound, poetic language and spatial design into a contemplative sensory experience.
Here, the presence of each viewer activates a digital starscape transforming it into living constellation poetry.

Constellations Of Us

Inspired by deXter Bentley’s One Minute Wonders feature on his Resonance FM radio show, The Hello Goodbye Show, I decided to build my own collection starting with the two tracks that I submitted to his radio show.
Expect improvisation, short explorations with modular, live coding and various test pieces using an assortment of  iPad applications.

Ephemeral Frequencies

An improvised performance using iOS apps, Ableton Live and midi keyboards. Field recordings of young Barn Owls still in their nest have been combined with synth layers and granular synthesis to produce eerie textures and a sweeping ambient soundscape.

A more ad-hoc approach to composition. Occasional discordant sounds and quieter moments. In the perfomance the piece responds to itself over time with differning elements having a conversation.

Recorded via Ableton Live with minimal secondary mastering for upload. Dark Space Part 1 Live is an improvised, textural and ambient piece slowly evolving with found sounds and feedback distortion.

Dark Space Part 2 Live is an improvised, textural and ambient piece slowly evolving with dark feedback, distortion, a rolling arpeggio and bassline.

Constellations of Us

A shortened version of the immersive soundscape developed for an audio visual installation for Constellations of Us premiering at Lightwaves Salford, December 2025.
The original full track is 25 minutes long and was mixed for a 7.1.4 channel surround system. This is a remixed 10 minute stereo version.

Constellations Of Us 10mins

This track was developed for the Cities and Memory Spring Project. A global community of sound artists are remixing sounds to form new and imaginative works shared via podcasts and a global audio map.

The audio that I selected for my own reimagined track originated in the Gare Du Nord, Paris. It contained the sounds of everyday travellers passing through the station alongside other ambient sounds and intriguingly fake birdsong being piped onto one of the stations platform.

This original audio was recorded in February 2026 by Cities and Memory.

One of a series of tracks produced in response to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Aiming for a more laid back vibe.
Words in mind are: Sameness, distance, reflection, listening, in limbo, calm, disquiet, drifting, downbeat and upbeat.

Transition 1

COVID-19 and the subsequent societal lockdown has intensified our contact with our immediate surroundings and has heightened our appreciation of the local. This piece is a meditation on the passing of time here, and of our own overall lack of agency with change.
Using a map of the area near to Grasmere in the Lake District for reference, this experimental track creates an evolving ambient and multilayered soundscape experience.
Audio samples taken from the restricted daily walks around my home location are used alongside a musical composition informed by Frere Jaques, the traditional nursery rhyme, often sung as a round, plays with the futility of time and repetition.
Text to Audio software has been used to capture geographic related words that echo and repeat in different voices as all current contact with others is mediated through technology.
This experimental track may form the basis for a longer piece of work.

Transition 2 - Frere Jaques

This track is a reworking of Transition 2 - Frere Jaques without the layered vocal elements as part of a plan for a much longer track. The melodic theme from Frere Jaques is modified and enhanced, alongside additional field recordings and a simple reference to Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’

Sounds of Silence Commission

Is This Just One Day? is an evolving ambient and multi-layered soundscape experience of a journey through the Lake District. The piece picks out locations around the Lake District, which have particular value to the authors. From these areas, field recordings from the landscape were taken and put to music to form a collection of sonic verses and words totaling 30 minutes. 

This piece is a meditation on the passing of time across in the Lake District, of the repetitions of our experience and of our overall lack of agency with how this space can change.

Emma Nuttall grew up in the Lake District. She is a creative writer, producing stories and experiences for multiple mediums including audio, augmented-reality, virtual-reality, interactive stories, location-based digital experiences and film. She is currently working toward completing her PhD, which focuses on narrative perspective in digital fiction.
 
Taylor Nuttall lives in the Lake District. Trained as a visual artist, he has exhibited widely with painting, installation, and digital media. CEO and Director for the arts organisation Folly 2001-2011. Recent creative work is exploring sound art and electronic music. He is currently Chair of Festival of Noise.

Since relocating to Dumfries & Galloway, Taylor has concentrated on improvisation, using software‑based modular systems and iPad performance tools alongside Ableton Live. This focus typically yields ambient, generative soundscapes. He also performs with Sonic Labs, an improvisational collective based at The Stove in Dumfries.

Taylor Nuttall is a composer, artist, and sound designer who deliberately avoids confining himself to any single genre. His work blends a wide array of influences, incorporating found sounds, data sonification and other personal material.
