Random Methodologies #1 (Dice Drawing) was inspired by young tbC member Damien McIntyre’s ability to see numbers in colour (synaesthesia). For Damien the number 1 is black, 2 is yellow, 3 is green, 4 is blue, 5 is red and 6 is pink. The artists at tbC found this number-colour sense fascinating and many discussions followed leading to a range of artistic ideas, actions and outcomes – the first being a series of generative abstract drawings, directed by the roll of a dice. tbC has since established a loosely scientific art methodology that inspires creative, collaborative inventions and outcomes. Experimental, accidental and random methodologies are encouraged. tbC uses collaborative, social and game-like approaches to unite the group’s artistic cohort in a range of artistic outcomes. tbC’s Random Methodologies #1 (Dice Drawing) and Random Methodologies #2 (Sound) facilitate participatory, collaborative arts making via aesthetic, interactive and ‘game’ concepts. Dice and other arbitrary practices ‘direct’ artworks. 

Random Methodologies #2 (Sound Works) is a collaboration between tbC and visiting sound artist Roderick Price. The roll of a dice directs the creation of a multi-layered aural experience/composition. The works were composed of randomly selected (activated and deactivated) sounds. These sounds are collected and made by tbC and mentor artist Roderick Price. Each sound is attributed a number from 1-6. These sounds are programed into a midi player and cued by the roll of a dice. There are 36 possible cues from which the soundscape can be built, embellished and redirected. (6 number one buttons, 6 number 2 buttons etc). Without knowing what sound will appear or disappear, the piece takes on an organic and unpredictable trajectory.

Each work is unique, original and yet programmed. Whilst guided, no two works can ever be the same due to the randomness of the numbers rolled by the dice. This work is a highly participatory experience. Participants roll the dice and engage in making an artistic work, whether that be a dice drawing or a sound composition. Regardless of whether or not the participant is a practicing artist they participate in composing a creative work. They become an artistic collaborator, a composer, an artist. Random Methodologies breaks down the conventional distinction between artist, art work and audience, creating a relationship that allows the non-artist or participant to collaborate in making the work.
