I've broken the bars and locks on the doors 
     of the prison I built for me
Leaving the city 
     and all of its memories
Here in the cold fields of winter the grasses 
     are brown and the sky is gray

A Delightful Night With Irene

Coming up on four years ago my teacher Steve Peplin gave me the John Coltrane album Master Takes Live at The Village Vanguard. It was the first jazz album I ever heard, and my life was never the same. After listening to Spiritual I knew I had to get deep in to this music; and since i have consistently, obsessively studied the jazz and related musics repertoire, technique, and way of life. Always keeping a very strong focus on the work of John Coltrane.

I think I wrote this in the Spring of 1979 and our then freshly formed band ("Riffin" ?!) performed it on what would have been my brother's 20th birthday at Huset Park in Columbia Heights. A number of friends and relatives attended and my grandma (MacGowan -) Wells, who I think also read a copy of the lyrics, commented I should work on music and poetry -- not computers! :)

We must have recorded this the following winter or spring, by then the five-some "Little Wing". Dale on drums; Tom and Steve on guitar/bass (not sure which, they might remember) and background vocals. Jim Young-Guy on keys. C'est moi on somewhat quavering vocals and guitar.
