What a year it’s been for Loadstar. Exceeding every possible expectation with their debut album ‘Future Perfect’ in May 2013, the duo won critical props and appreciation from every possible corner: from The Guardian to Mixmag, Hype to High Contrast, MTV to Radio 1… Love for Loadstar has been overwhelming. 

Naturally the love goes both ways. Here the Bristol duo provide an early Christmas reboot bundle, bringing 2013 to a fittingly heavy climax. Six remixes in total (two digital exclusives from a heavily subscribed RAM remix competition) the package features D&B reversion’s from some of the label’s most talented artists. 

First up is a remix from Loadstar themselves. Flipping the switch on their electro-bass burn-up ‘Losing You’, they ante up with pummelling drum dynamics and a bassline that screams bona fide murderation. True subversive heavyweightism. 

Up next, ‘Need You’. It began as a turbo-charged techno monster. Now, under the careful spell of Frankee, it’s a rush-coated, star-gazing roller built on a solid bed of bass textures. Twinkling and terrorising in equal measure, Frankee once again shows why he’s been rated as one of drum & bass’s brightest prospects. 

Those hungry for jugular-focused damage should jump on DC Breaks’ take on ‘Give It To Me’. Riddled with insane levels of energy and attitude, this is strictly peaktime business right here, confirming the duo’s current do-no-wrong status. 

Rene LaVice is also on chop-slapping form with his incendiary rub. Processing the demonic dubsteppy intentions of the original into a rocket-powered stepper, it has the sound (and impact) of someone setting fire to entire firework factory and running off at full speed. Genuine audio damage. 

Finally we have two digital exclusives. Swotting off the competition from hundreds of fellow hopefuls, both Ality and Abstr4ct are more than well-deserved winners. Ality adds oceanic sheet metal textures to the bass that’s neatly countered by tight weaves of dreamy synths while Abstr4ct takes the original’s distinctive paranoid riff and galvanises it with an iced out, steppy riddim and an array of system-blowing glitches. It’s so heavy Andy C included it on his recent ‘Nightlife 6’ mix. 

Six remixes, six reminders of Loadstar’s raw power. The perfect way to end a future perfect year…

In truth, it's not actually been that long since we last caught up with the Playaz affiliated duo, Annix but since March of this year they've been putting in the work, DJing in far flung places and releasing their Past & Future EP on Playaz a couple of weeks back. They'll next be appearing here in Room One at the Playaz Carnival Special on Friday 22nd August so to mark that and the release of new Annix material, they've put together another sharp blast of the kind of drum & bass they're currently representing ahead of the event next week...

The drum and bass scene is looking strong. From the sweaty recesses of the grimiest jump-up raves to chart-topping, ad-soundtracking mainstream acceptance, 2015 has shown that this music has the full spectrum covered. And Technique Recordings, as always, has been up there at the forefront of the movement. This compilation, drawn from Technique's releases over the year, is here to confirm that point.

As you'd expect, the veteran artists are representing in force. The mighty Tantrum Desire is a consistent presence showing off multiple facets of their anthemic sound, with tracks like “Sea Breeze” and “Oblivion”, plus quirkier offerings like the stripped-back DJ weapon “Pump”. And of course, their huge collaborations with Matrix & Futurebound and Drumsound & Bassline Smith are here too. Talking of the label bosses, they haven't held back on their contributions either, treating us to the euphoria of “I Need Somebody”, the filth of “Spring Heel Jack” and plenty more besides. All that before we even get into the floor-filling monsters provided by the likes of L Plus, Crissy Criss and MaxNRG.

Alongside those battle-hardened Technique warriors are newer recruits to the team. Document One have made a huge impact this year and the soulful vibe and dancefloor energy of tracks like “Follow Me” and “Jazz Club” demonstrate  why. Aussie representative Spectrem brings some melodic jungle sensibilities to the album with “Say Goodbye”, while Erb N Dub & Skope deliver something powerfuly individual with “Drummer”. Neuro-specialists Gradual and big-room filler Kronology each deliver a couple of heavyweight pieces to cement their status too.

Then there are those artists whose names you might not instantly associate with Technique. Brian Brainstorm drops some full-on break-twisting jungle with “Pon Di Streets”, for example. Melinki and North Base take us back to the sunshine with “Summer Solstice” and “Bikini Dance”, and even the legends Digital and Decoder & Substance grace us with their presence.

Like the drum and bass scene as a whole, this compilation has flavours in abundance. As a marker of the work Technique's put in this year, bringing through new artists, showing off the best of established ones and delivering a rarely-paralleled variety of D&B styles, this delivers on all counts. The only thing left to the imagination is the question of how this can possibly be equalled in 2016. Better strap in for the ride.
