An attempt at a completely self contained, random patch using 6 modules of the Pittsburgh Modular System 90 (plus OUTS). Sample and hold is being pinged by a slow square wave LFO, which chooses a random Slewed CV pitch voltage for the oscillator. This signal is going into a highly resonant filter, for which the cutoff is modulated by a slow looping envelope, which has it's rise CV slightly altered by the initial clocking LFO (as a triangle wave). Only reverb added in post.

Introduction

A simple 3 part melody recorded in one take on a Pittsburgh Modular system, and influenced by SynthMania's latest Trident Mk. II video.

Timing is run by the Timerunner, with its /1 clock out running a Gamesystem in Percussion Programmer mode. This sends triggers out to run the Bass envelope and the Lead sequencer/envelope. Timerunner /16 output is sent to the Mode input of the Gamesystem, effectively giving us 2 32 channel trigger sequences, instead of the usual 16 channels. the /16 is also going into a Sequencer, which deals with the pitch changes of both the Bass and Chords.

Bass is a simple Waveforms Saw going into an LPG with minimal resonance. 

Chords are 3 separate Tri Waveforms tuned as a 1st inversion minor chord, and mixed into an LPG on the BOTH setting, triggered by a fairly slow ADSR.

Lead is a dual tri DNA waveform, one an octave above, affected by the "delay" parameter. There is a slow LFO blending between the two voices. It is pitched by a Gamesystem Music Programmer, originally tuned to a melody in the G Phrygian mode. Halfway through I turned on the random function, allowing for improvisation, while remaining in the Phrygian key. It is mixed into a Pgh Filter, and sent out to the Analog Replicator on a decently slow delay.

There is a little effect using noise. I wanted to do a highhat, but ran out of filters, so I have noise running into a DualVCA that's modulated by a sequencer. This opens the noise output on step 5 very briefly, which corresponds to an off beat feeling when running along side the master clock. In addition, there is a Chain Reaction influenced LFO going into the Sequencer Add input. This randomizes the opening of the VCA a bit, since I thought it sounded pretty cool. This noise is then sent to the same filter as the Lead, and follows the signal through the Analog Replicator. 

I also wanted to add an underlying kick, but didn't have any spare filters or oscillators, so I thought to trigger the PING inputs of both LPGs from the /8 TimeRunner. While the internal vactrols didn't produce a steady sounding kick, I think it did the job of having some sort of driving force. 

The Lead, Bass, and Chords were mixed together and sent to the Verbtronic, and out to Logic where it was caressed by a bit of EQ, Compression, and a touch of stereo reverb.

After a long hiatus, we return with a lot of new equipment. This was a test of panning functions of the WMD Performance mixer, as well as of two modules from Mutable Instruments, Rings and Clouds. 

The main driving force of this piece is two melodies created on two Game Systems. Both are a minor third apart and playing the same steps, however every so often Pamela's New Workout sends a random gate that makes one of the Game Systems skip a beat, creating a sort of offset phasing between the two melodies. Mutable Instruments Rings provides plucked string-like bass going through a Pittsburgh Phase Shifter. Highhats are a simple noise source going through a Pittsburgh Filter, with the modulation slightly modulated by a random sample and hold, as well as the envelope.

The Kick is a ping of the vectorial in a Pittsburgh LPG going through a  Pittsburgh Crush for some nice bit crushing effects, negating the need for another filter to shape that sound. The Analog Replicator functions as a voice by itself, with no input going into it. Utilizing excess fragments of the internal buffer, we modulate the decay time and feedback with a random sample and hold to create a somewhat odd, yet totally recognizable BBD delay swirl.

Everything is being sent to a Mutable Instruments Clouds, which adds a little bit of extra noise here and there, as well as the freeze buffer pad in the beginning.

No. 6

This was first experiment with the Moog Drummer from Another Mother. After sending a few hours going through all of the templates that Moog provided, I started to mix what I learned together to create the main beat, albeit at a much slower tempo that anything in the manual.

The slow nature of the beat lent itself to copious reverb from Mutable Instruments Clouds and Pittsburgh Verbtronic. A simple 3 note phrase was added using two Waveforms oscillators, with both the SAW and SUB used to make a perfect fifth interval. They are both going into a Pittsburgh Binary Filter that is slowly modulated by a triangle wave from an LFO2. There is also a single repeating note that is triggered by the Trigger output of the Pittsburgh Envelope, which has it's decay being modulated by a medium triangle wave to add some tempo movement. Lastly Mutable Instruments Rings is being triggered every now and then by a slow moving Envelope to ring the piece to a close with Clouds.

A modular synthesis experiment found in the depths of a hard drive. A focus was places primarily having two distinct halves: a bass created with Pittsburgh Modular oscillators and filters, and an etherial shimmer created with the Mutable Instruments Clouds.

A modular synthesizer experiment, focusing on the random nature of chance utilizing a number of sample and hold circuits. Voices created with Pittsburgh Modular oscillators and filters as well as the Mutable Instruments Rings. Percussion created with a filtered noise source with a kick from a pinged Pittsburgh LPG.

A modular synthesizer experiment in minimal performance. A Moog Grandmother shows the main melody, with a single Pittsburgh Oscillator providing bass and a Mutable Instruments Rings providing the bells.
