Extraordinary experiences ( 2020- ongoing)  uses photography as a conduit for emotional interpretation of reality during a time of turmoil. Created in the streets near where I live, on daily walks, the images depict a dark exploration of the landscape interspersed with motifs of my family and of animals. The resulting images come from an intuitive response to my surroundings, the images interplay with photography’s ability to make eternal what is fleeting.

There are a set of psychological phenomena that can happen to the bereaved, loosely named Extraordinary Experiences. One of them is a visual apparition of or "seeing" the loved one. This work allows me to make tangible those feelings, the apparitions of emotions, memories and dreams embed grief into the photographs, the final images a reflection of myself as the photographer, rather than the subjects photographed.   These images explore the idea of being haunted by the past, of reckoning with history, and the eternity of the natural world.'

In response to three months of restricted movement between Saturday June 26th and Monday 11th October, “Windpipe” explores the expansion and contraction of the trachea in deep respiratory relief.

Without your mother considers the nature of absence within maternal relationships. An absence is a state or condition in which something expected, wanted or looked for is not present. We begin our lives looking for our mothers. Do we ever stop looking for them and do they ever stop looking for us? As we grow, we make attempts to detach ourselves in order to become independent and live adult lives. What remnants of this relationship that defines our early lives remain in the distance of adulthood? Amid absence, our memories morph, the details become duller and distorted over time and we’re left with a summarised version of what might have happened, similar to a photograph. Some edges will blur and some will sharpen until those are the only parts we can remember.

"My memory is not particularly good.
 
A couple of years ago I received a couple of rolls of film in
the mail that I had left at my photo lab some time ago. Everything was as I expected, except for one roll of medium format film. I had absolutely no memory of taking one of the photos on that roll while the rest was totally familiar. The more I looked at the photo, the more I got lost. I couldn’t understand where or when it was taken. It didn’t look like anything I’d shot before.
 
The image is out of focus and blurred in only one corner where a man seems to be walking towards the camera and a woman follows him. Their clothes recall the ’50s, and their faces are unclear. The place looks like the entrance of a mansion and reminded me of a post-funeral scene, or maybe a wedding. Even though I continued looking at the image for months, I couldn’t figure out where it came from.
 
I was at war with my memory. Photography had turned against me. My efforts at capturing the situation had turned inside out, leaving me with confusion and ambiguity. A moment of clearness gave way to skepticism. Once again, I started reflecting on why I photograph. I often find myself attracted to the in-between situations in the landscape of isolation and detachment in society. There is some- thing that fascinates me about how we handle those moments of daily purgatory. I don’t usually photograph people but when I do, I find myself in some ways looking for their “ghosts”.
 
This time, they seem to have found me."

"Looking West, by Laurence Watts, is a photographic work that examines performative masculinity in Australian Rodeo subculture and the iconography of the Cowboy. It aims to destabilise notions of masculine identity by revealing its construction through social performance. The series is underpinned by a semi-narrative throughline of ‘searching for the cowboy’. This search finds that long after the West has been won, and the Frontier closed, the Cowboy exists as a set of visual cultural ideals through which masculinity is articulated in Rodeo sub-culture, utilising the sartorial codes of the Western hat, boots, shirt and belt buckle."

"Sly Morikawa’s ‘Heaven Doesn’t Want Me’ invites us to suspend morality and reflect on our desire for the forbidden. A continuation of her zine, ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’, released with Catalogue Library in 2021, this series develops her ongoing study of sex, subculture and self. 

For Morikawa, beauty and unorthodoxy are inextricable. Her photographs reveal an enchantment with the underground, the taboo, the freak. Through her lens, we see the outsider rendered vulnerable and human. The inherent softness of her work further conveys a sense of stillness and peace amid disorder. 

This series of photographs examines intimacy and exposes our primal connection to others. The works capture feelings of tenderness and purity alongside moments of corruption, allowing the audience to be seduced by the allure of the perverse. 

‘Heaven Doesn’t Want Me’ suggests that there is freedom to be found in chaos. Goodness is overrated. Angels are sexy. Authority is fragile; disregard the rules. What need have I of Heaven when I am not of Earth?" - Lucy White

Hani Hanbali has provided us with a beautiful mix to accompany Jason Koxvold's exhibition in the windows: 'Calle Tredici Martiri'

'
Calle Tredici Martiri (Alley of the Thirteen Martyrs) is a fictionalised photographic reinterpretation of Koxvold’s grandfather Aldo Varisco’s campaign of direct action against the Nazi occupation of Italy. 

The project’s title refers to the location of the Venetian headquarters of the National Republican Guard at Ca’ Giustinian, which Varisco’s team destroyed with explosives in 1944, killing 13. The following day, the German military shot 13 Italian prisoners in retribution for the attack; Varisco and his team were later captured and extensively tortured. After the war, the street alongside Ca’ Giustinian was renamed “Calle Tredici Martiri.”

This project explores the impossibility of photographic truth in the context of the contemporary nexus of capitalism, fascism and consumerism within which we locate ourselves.'

Ashes focuses on a small town on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand, that has recently gone through an industrial change & a shift in the ecology of the area.
 Treating this town as a case study for wider symbolism of fractured communities, I’m interested in the effect globalisation has had on industry firstly on a local level but also as with my previous work, how identity is formed through place.
Having such a prosperous yet reliant relationship to finite materials binds one to the land, to the area and to the vocation. This commitment therefore forges identity over time. Ashes asks the question of how identity can be shaped and what different factors have in creating identity.
 The focus being a collective attachment on a localised and now defunct industry. Is this lost when the physicality of place is removed? How does this supposed fracture present itself?
 Seeing this brutal landscape seem unperturbed by a change that was so obviously impacting those who inhabit the area. Why in such remote places does a sense of self seem more amplified? The link of stoicism between land & individual is something that only exists in these areas, the people reflect the area in such a way that it arcs back again to their overall identity.
