Good things take time,” TC Silk sings on Genuine Jamaican Silk, the first release from the burgeoning South Florida artist since returning to his musical roots after a prolonged absence from the local scene. The exuberant seven tracks contained within the EP, which was released across digital and physical platforms on September 15th, 2023 aren’t just cuts that would be at home on any tastemaker’s playlist — they’re a fulfillment of that promise. 

TC Silk is Brandon Norris, an artist operating in the uncharted space between cloud rap and bedroom synth-pop, a first generation Jamaican American, and an unabashed South Florida lifer. Inspired by the many different phases of the local music scene he’s been a part of, Norris spent his formative years spent studying classical and jazz trumpet, and refined his sound through both formal education and his experiences as a self-described “weird kid who went through every phase from punk to rap with connections that span from trap houses in Lake Worth to mansions on Palm Beach Island.”

Written and produced at his home studio and refined at OnBeat Studios in West Palm Beach, his new EP represents the culmination of a prolific creative period in Norris’ life. In a time where most music is stuck on adolescent or gangster concepts most cannot relate to, Norris tackles topics that are rarely discussed in the hip-hop genre. The seven tracks that comprise Genuine Jamaican Silk boast lyrics that skewer the affluence of Palm Beach living while emphasizing the struggles of American young adulthood outside the 1%, coupled with contemporary production that introduces a melancholy twinge to bouncy and effervescent beats. In his own words, Norris describes the TC Silk sound as akin to “the angelic version of Travis Scott, or Future if he never sold drugs and loved Devo,” and those characterizations ring truer with each new synth patch and production flourish as the record unfolds.
