Raleigh, NC’s Gray Young is the ultimate musical paradox. Somewhere in between soaring, atmospheric riffs and nuanced, delicate melodies, the band navigates extremes like a weathered mountain climber. Gray Young’s songs seethe with intensity and susceptibility, emerging in Technicolor, wielding energetic bass lines and intricate chord progressions that flow seamlessly. Unlike artists whose instrumentals are merely bolsters between hooks, Gray Young’s are a constant push and pull between calm and chaos, and every climactic swell bears the power of a riptide.

With the release of their first album, Firmament, in 2009, the band quickly became known for the roiling tension of their musical creations, delivering build-and-release epics in three to four minute sprints rather than marathons. Their second release, 2010’s staysail, was a departure from their previous effort, reigning in some of the band’s melodic squall and allowing the vocals to play a more prominent role.

The secret to the band’s sound can be found in the delicate balance struck between its parts. Singer/guitarist Chas McKeown’s shimmering guitar and haunting vocals wrap around bassist Dan Grinder’s melodic, driving basslines, while the propulsive attack of drummer Jeff Dopko lays a foundation upon which to build. Gray Young’s songs are created as a unit – each member’s contribution equally vital to the atmosphere the band creates.

With its new album, Bonfire, Gray Young is at its fullest and most focused, returning to the mostly instrumental mesh of mood and melody that made the band’s early work so promising. But this is no retread. This is the sound of a band moving ahead into exciting territory with an assured sense of what they are capable of. Bonfire, with its nimble balance of U2 structure and Explosions In The Sky ambiance, is a dynamic effort that highlights the band’s ability to create a mood and expose all of the complexities within. This is Gray Young at their best.

I'm borrowing a friend's Dr. Z M12 amp and I just bought a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 audio interface, so I thought I'd throw something together to see how they both sound.

This is the result of ~4 or 5 hours of work start to finish, so obviously there's a lot left to be desired with mixing, drums, etc.

All guitars are a parts Telecaster with Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups. The M12 is plugged into a Dr. Z open back 2x12 cab, and I had the Celestion V30 mic'd. For microphones I used an SM57 and a Rode NT1000. All tracks have both mics mixed in. For the SM57, I used the TRANY 1 H emulation (API 3124+) and for the Rode I used the SAVILLEROW preamp emulation (Helios Console).

For overdrives I used both the Walrus Audio Voyager and Mayflower.

Since this was a test, I honestly just threw up the mics and left them there. They sound ok, but if this was the real deal I probably would have spent more time on mic position. I also kind of arbitrarily chose the preamp emulations. I scrolled through them real fast and picked the ones I liked best from a brief first listen.

For plugins, I did use the Slate Audio VCC on the RC-Tube setting (I haven't bought the full plugin yet). I also used the Waves SSL bundle... the EQ and channel strip on most of the tracks and the compressor on the master buss and drum buss. Drums were programmed using Addictive Drums. For a super quick master I used Izotope Ozone 5.
