I really like both “What’s the ugliest part of your body?” by Frank Zappa (https://youtu.be/-1WJyLQjypo) and “Tous les garçons et les filles” by Françoise Hardy (https://youtu.be/_V-b8QIYOpM), and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to combine them into one song.

This song was mostly recorded for fun, but I perhaps thought that the “ugliness of the mind” mentioned in “Whats the ugliest part of your body?” is what possibly leads to the “loneliness and longing” mentioned in “Tous les garçons et les filles”.

I didn’t really know how I wanted to end this song, a fade out would’ve probably been best, but in the end I liked the abrupt end of the loops, so left it as that.

I’m aware my French “accent” is terrible, but I thought singing “Tous les garçons et les filles” as a monotone, nearly-30-year-old English man was quite different from the original “sexy”, French ingénue… even though the lyrics are just as appropriate.

“I should’ve asked you about music…” is about holding on to an idea and thinking that if I had asked someone a question, everything would be different… hindsight basically, but in a creepy context…

The title of the song may imply that it isn’t a “song to myself”, but I think the lyrics “…I should’ve asked you about music…” are not intended as a question to someone else, but more of a frustrated, hindsight statement to me. Perhaps “… should I have asked you about music?...” would be more appropriate if it was a question to the intended person, although that has a creepiness to it as well… Eeeh, sorry…

I’m worried that this is probably the “creepiest” song on the album, as it does reference a real-life event. I don’t imagine the person “I should’ve asked about music” will listen to the song, and it doesn’t use their name or any other details, so I hope it’s okay… apologies if not. Whilst I may secretly hope the person in question hears the song, it’s more intended to highlight the creepy, hindsight thoughts I have and how they haven’t really achieved anything but making me creepier (I think)…!?!

I used the “Rock 1” beat from the Casio VL-1, made famous by Trio in “Da Da Da”, you can listen to that here: https://youtu.be/lNYcviXK4rg. “Da Da Da” is one of my favourite songs, as I think it manages to convey a very specific emotion/feeling using very little instrumentation and few lyrics. “I should’ve asked you about music…” is the opposite, I think it has too many confused lyrics which I try to hide behind too many tracks, so I maybe used the “Rock 1” beat as an “anti-nod” to the fantastic simplicity of “Da Da Da”… or I just used it because I love “Da Da Da”…!?!

It’s a “sort of” cover, as I have changed some of the lyrics (I apologise if this is seen as sacrilege!). The original is (presumably) a relatively “light” song, with Jonathan reassuring a love interest of his faithfulness, in his usual charming(?) way. My version is about self-obsession, wasting time worrying, giving up, and how these things have led me to my current baffled state. I really like a lot of Gospel music, but the “certainty” of a lot of the lyrics sometimes amuse me (not intending any disrespect!). I feel that everything in my life is uncertain, I don’t know why I do what I do, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. This song was intended to “celebrate” uncertainty in the way some Gospel music “celebrates” certainty.

“’round in circles…” was written in 2014 when I was about to start a new job, which I wasn’t sure about. The job I had at the time was great, I really liked most of the people I worked with, but occasionally felt I “didn’t have a place”, or there was no opportunity/attitude for development. The new job “on paper”, seemed to offer development, but without the friends I currently worked with. I’ve never thought of myself as a “career person”, but at the time I was wondering if I “should” be, and maybe questioning what my priorities were, and what they “should” be…!?! During this time, I don’t think I wrote or recorded many songs, so “’round in circles…” is probably a result of the frustration/confusion I was experiencing then.

I ended up working the new job for two days, and then went back to the old one… Selfishly causing a lot of bother for everyone else involved… Eeeh, sorry…! As mentioned in the album description, these songs are all very self-indulgent…

“Would it change anything…?” is pretty much about talking yourself out of ever doing anything…!

I don’t think I’m a particularly ambitious person, but do find myself occasionally thinking “…what if…?”… I’m usually quick to dismiss any ideas like this and tell myself “…yeah, but everything is alright as it is…!”. This song details a few “…what if…?” ideas I’ve had and then cheerily ignores them, until the middle part of the song where I admit that I think “…I’m only fooling myself…”, but ultimately question that, wondering if I’m just hiding behind some false nonchalance, or if I am genuinely content…? The song then goes on to me thinking “well, I could find out if I try…!”, but ultimately admitting that my (possible) nonchalant “pose” will probably stop me from doing anything…? Who knows eh…!?

Ultimately, I think the song was meant to encourage “trying things you think you want to”, but there’s always the risk of doing something for the “wrong” reasons or affecting others negatively, so I’m not really sure…

“That lurking guy…” is about me attempting to acknowledge that I am a lurker/creep and trying to change my ways, although the solutions presented in the song are probably quite lurk-y/creepy themselves… Eeeh…

I think the lyrics are generally pretty straightforward, but fear that certain lines only re-inforce my “lurker-ness”… for example “…I’m trying not to worry so much…” possibly implies a lack of concern about being a lurker, but is intended to explain that I think worrying about being a lurker is something that makes me more of a lurker (but is that exactly what a lurker would think!?!), and that “…need to take the time to learn to care…” suggests an inability to care unless learned (which is maybe true of everyone!?), but I worry it may make me look like an emotionless psychopath (which maybe I am!?). The line about “…forgetting rules when drunk…” reiterates the emotionless psychopath theme and is about the time I said one of “the worst things I’ve ever said” whilst at a friend’s music festival. I dislike the line “…trying to be nicer…”, as “niceness” is a matter of opinion, and one persons “nice” could be another’s “creepy”, but I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate, and I could spend all day worrying about this sort of thing…! Eeeh, I just don’t know how other people experience emotions/life…?!

“My old mind” is about being unsure if holding on to the past is a good thing or not…
I often find myself thinking back to when I was younger, more enthusiastic and got a lot more done (I think!?!) and hoping to recreate how I was then. Being enthusiastic and getting things done is great, but I think what was once “youthful naivety” has become “old ignorance” and I can no longer justify the things I think I want to do (in my head), or maybe I’ve just become more lazy…!? In some ways I feel I have changed very little in the last 10 years, but I’m not sure if it’s through a “lack of ambition” or just “stubbornly-holding-on-to-the-past”… and as the song says, “I suppose that’s why I’m in this mess”, but I’m probably just trying to make excuses… Eeeh…

Um... I know I should never do covers of songs I actually like, because I always ruin them... So, I’m not really sure why I did this, because Home is probably one of my favourite songs... Sorry about that... Er, apologies for using lame Reverb and Echo effects to attempt to hide the weak singing and also the guitar is rather quiet, but it was all recorded just strumming and singing into one mic, so it’s all one track and I don’t really know how to mess abooot with the levels really...
