PT009: Offbeats Hustlings - Oolya EP [Pinkturban]

Offbeats Hustling's debut 'Rio Ritta EP' on Pinkturban smashed into the world with widespread DJ and radio support following its premiere on BBC Radio 1 by Toddla T. Now, the Belarusian bass producer AKA Dzmitry Kulikouski returns to the label for a second installation.

His follow-up EP features two eastern-influenced, high-energy dance floor monsters: "Oolya" is infectious and deep with its rich layering of ethnic synths, looped Indian vocals, and a relentlessly driving bassline. "Flute Tribe" is uniquely experimental and contrasts mysterious flute melodies with the intensity of its beat.

Arabic Square Kufic artwork for the release is provided by Egyptian calligrapher Mahmoud Gafar, which translated means "Love is the secret of the Universe."

Following his debut EP release on Pinkturban, Evan Hatfield returns to the label with his next offering, 'Confused Ravi EP.'

"Confused Ravi" is a luscious mix of house, techno, and Indian classical music. It features a seductive sitar performance by Evan himself, escorted by deep groovy rhythms and synthesizer syncopations.

The track is inspired by the moment world-renowned sitar player Ravi Shankar discovers that George Harrison of The Beatles is coming to India to study sitar with him. Considering how, at that time, the West generally paid little attention to Eastern culture, it came as a great surprise to Shankar.

Hitting it hard on the B-side is 'Time', a gritty dancefloor track featuring Evan's sitar and oud skills. Both tracks marry a balance of other-worldly soundscapes and tasteful composition that further defines this unique artist.

Otm Shank is back. He's ready, and this time, it's personal…

The alter ego of British electronic music producer and owner of the Los Angeles-based Pinkturban record label, Rik Dobson, is now ready to reveal himself in his debut full-length 10-track album, 'Who is Otm Shank?.'

The album follows his Indian-inspired dance tracks such as "Ravish," "Bounce," and 'Kaida," which received international airplay across stations such as BBC 6 Music, 5FM, and Kiss FM and were remixed by high-profile artists such as Ahadadream (Boiler Room), ZDS (Dirtybird), Jey Kurmis (Hot Creations), and Bakongo (Roska Kicks & Snares).

'Who is Otm Shank?' is an exploration of identity. Deep, intense, rich, lush, colorful, psychedelic, groovy, and experimental, it's a reflection of Dobson's journey of discovering his deep connection with Indian culture and music.

The project is a concept album based on the Indian hand drum tabla. Born as a result of his devoted study of tabla with his guru Debasish Chaudhuri (nephew and disciple of world-renowned tabla master Swapan Chaudhuri), Dobson used many varying tools and techniques to present tabla in an electronic form quite unlike anything that's come before.

Featuring big and bouncy analog house tracks such as "Otm" and "Dirt," contrasted with experimental psychedelic experiences such as "Tamdrin" and "Maharaja," and tabla composition-heavy performances such as "Rela," "Biryani," and "Baya," the album is a cosmic collision of East meets West.

Drawing influences from 60s minimalist artists such as Terry Riley, techno and house artists such as KiNK and Claude VonStroke, and true to Indian classical music, Dobson took a live improvisation approach to make the album. Stepping away from his usual sample-based production style, 'Who Is Otm Shank?' was made almost entirely with analog synths, drum machines, and outboard gear.

Dobson mixed the album under the guidance of legendary producer and mix engineer Adam Moseley (Trident Studios, Tina Turner, U2). The artwork features Egyptian artist Mahmoud Gafar's Square Kufic calligraphy skills, which reads "Otm Shank" in Arabic in the shape of a question mark.

Since time without beginning, artists have sought to unravel the mysteries of life through their work. But does great art provide answers or only stimulate further questions? In his debut album, Dobson explores many questions to find his ultimate answer to 'Who is Otm Shank?'
