The second of three collaborations see Kiwi artists The Doqument and Surf City joining forces on the track ‘Dice’. The song combines the laid-back, psychedelic vibes of indie rock band Surf City with the philosophical lyrics of urban rap group The Doqument for what is truly “a clash of the genres”. 

With both parties bringing such diverse musical talents to the table, creative differences were an inevitable and essential part of the journey. [It was] “really interesting blending the rules of hip-hop with the rules of indie guitar pop”, says sound engineer Chris Chetland. 

When it was agreed that hip-hop would form the basis of the track, beat maker Shaqles of The Doqument went away and composed the skeleton of the beat. Then “after a bit of back and forth, we put our heads down and came back with something truly unique”, says $ikeOne.  “Once we reached a common ground on beat selection and melody, the track pretty much wrote itself.”

Solid Steel (29th August) We welcome Fort Romeau to Solid Steel in Hr 1 with a rather fine mix and this is what he said;
“This mix was done with no planning just using what's in my record bag at the moment. There are tracks here that I’ve been playing out a lot  as well as some older, possibly lesser know bits and a couple of classics. Its important for me to have a good mix of old and new when I’m DJing and I like finding connections between tracks regardless of whether they came out in 1983, 1997 or last week. Context is everything when it comes to how we perceive music and I think re framing older tracks in the right way can create a feeling that somehow the music is existing in some uniform yet indefinable time period. Listening back theres definitely a strong Vocoder House / Electronic Disco strain running through the mix, but everyone loves a singing robot don’t they?”

For this album, Ebo joined forces with 12-piece band ‘The Pelikans’ — from the Cape Coast region of Ghana — led by Bessa Simmona, with rhythm guitarist Fifi Orleans Lindsay. A genuine ‘holy-grail’ of Ghanaian music and one of Ebo’s most saught-after.

The album was released on the small Abookyi label. Named after a nightclub they played in called PELIKANS, and sung in English and Fante, this was the first album where Ebo sang on tracks, such as the classic ‘Come Along’, on which he also plays keyboard. This song clearly defined a new direction in highlife and has become a Ghanaian funk anthem. ‘Come Along’ formed the basis of Sadat X’s ‘Remember That’ hip hop jam from 2011.

This official Mr Bongo re-issue is packaged in our new & improved heavyweight ‘tip-on’ sleeves; printed in Japan, pressed on high quality vinyl, audio restored to the best of our ability, with label designs and artwork as per the original release.
