If you’ve been keeping your eye on the Los Angeles D&B scene, then you’ll know all about Slogun and iOh. Hailed as “Ones to Watch” by Kmag in 2013, their deep respect for junglist history and culture has fuelled a steady rise to prominence both as DJs and producers. Now, they’re ready to take the next step, and make their mark on the international scene
as part of the Technique roster.

So, after the warning shot of Razor Sharp on the 15 Years of Technique LP, it’s time to welcome the team now known as Kronology with their first full release.

You & Me kicks off proceedings in an unmistakeably US style. Evolving house keys establish the percussive heart of the track as classic synth tones add a touch of euphoria. Then a rising siren provides a call to action, delivered on by a funk-filled pizzicato bass and ultra-crisp drums. With this one, Kronology manage to balance an effortless, liquid vibe with rolling rhythms that aim straight at the dance floor.

On Submerge, Kronology team up with some fellow Los Angelians, the DJs, live performers and producers Divine Elements. The result is some highly grimy bass and mightily hard drums all topped off with some finely chopped samples. At its core, this track is all about that rhythmic motif in the low-end, an irresistible rave engine which this production supergroup constantly disassemble and re-engineer to keep this fresh from beginning to end.

Then Kronology recruit the singer-songwriter known as Without My Armor, to show a whole new facet to their work. Monster opens into a claustrophobic atmosphere, with dark pads vying for space with the vocals and creating a level of tension that begs for relief. And that relief comes as the bassline and counter-balancing mid-range bursts onto the scene. The contrast between the constricted metal influence that weaves through the track and the open, big-room sound gives this a vibe all of its own.

So Kronology have arrived, and they’ve got some flavours that you might not have heard before. While fully immersed in drum and bass music, they’ve brought their own influences of American EDM, house, punk and metal to work into the formula. Straight out of the San Fernando Valley, here’s something new for the D&B scene, encapsulated in their first release, the Timelapse EP.

There's a storm on the horizon. For those that know what's up in the bass-heavy music scene, the forthcoming Tantrum Desire album, “Diversified”, is one of the most anticipated releases of 2015. You just need to check recent sets and radio shows from heavy-hitters like Friction, DJ Hype and Drumsound & Bassline Smith to see that cuts from the LP are already making their presence felt.

And now here's “Oblivion”, the single that shows just how monumental the Tantrum Desire sound has become.

This track encapsulates multiple sides to that sound. The intro is pure seduction, with a slick rhythm section of bass plucks, laid-back drumming and piano chords under the light and grace of Solah's vocals. As an edge of percussive hardness creeps into her voice, all of a sudden the energy builds and it's clear there's a switch-up coming. Then the drop delivers that to full capacity, cutting through the smoky atmosphere with high-energy synth hits and the type of call and response between bass and mid-range that mark this out as pure Tantrum Desire.

The breakdown gives us yet another facet, as jungle breaks float in and around the piano and vocals to offer gratitude to the old skool. Then there's a second drop to put it all together, showcasing weighty bass, euphoric high-end and a deftly technical approach to delivering the chord changes.

“Oblivion” is Tantrum Desire in concentrated form, a lethal dose of musicianship, ultra-clean production skills, respect for their D&B heritage and dancefloor hype. This is a killer which is immediately going to find its place across raves and airwaves. Check it, and hold tight because the album “Diversified” has a lot more where that came from.

Let's not beat around the bush. Anyone who knows anything knows that this album is going to be big. It's absolutely clear Jay and Dev have put the graft in over the last decade to claim and maintain their D&B-elite status. For one thing, production mastermind Jay has put in the studio hours to hone that distinctive, arena-sized Tantrum Desire sound. And, as DJs, they've proven their ability to take that sound into the real world and make it connect with the biggest crowds bass-heavy music has to offer. There are a handful of acts that can simultaneously kill it in the underground and the mainstream, and we're about to find out why Tantrum Desire is one of them.

So, time to break this down.

Obviously, this album contains more than its fair share of showstopping anthems. “Oblivion”, for example, seduces us with the uplifting innocence of Solah's vocal style, before moving the sound effortlessly from naïve purity to gritty toughness. This, all woven together with stomping bass, jungle drum fills and a stripped-back piano-led breakdown, means that it's going to connect with listeners' emotions as much as ravers' dancing shoes. Some tunes, like the Laura Bayston-laced “Underground” and the syncopated madness of “Genesis”, have already been making waves for a while among those who keep their finger on the pulse. And the aggressively percussive US-influenced “Pump” is currently a key weapon of choice among DJs when it's time to turn up the hype levels.

Then there are a couple of almighty supergroup collaborations. For one, Drumsound and Bassline Smith join the party on “I Need You Here”. This takes the big-room build-up to Empire State proportions. Gentle synths build to a soaring sing-along vocal hook, which in turn give way to huge polyphonic chords. Then the drop is a virtuoso display of drum programming, with a heavy bed of half-speed kicks and snares supporting subtly-switched up samples. But then just when you think you've reached the limit of what the track has to offer, there's a breakdown and another build into a full-speed, full-power drop that's going to hit like a tactical nuke in any rave. Matrix and Futurebound pass through too, to bless “The Shadows” with their skills. Elegant harmonies melt into a sinister dialogue sample and the dark funk of a pizzicato riff in the low registers. The track builds into straight up modernist techstep, taking the classic paradigm and applying contemporary sensibilities of energy control.

But this album isn't all about the big ticket items. It's not just a collection of singles, but a cohesive vision, a journey mapped by a pair of DJs and producers immersed in the music. This is made clear right from the beginning, with the drumless title track setting out the template of movement between vibes and styles. Delving deep, there's “Goddess of Love”, with its unapologetically constant level of tension, reiterated and reinforced by ever-changing sample-manipulation. And there's “Back for Love”, featuring Julie Gordon and Smokesta, an almost lo-fi excursion, which takes tropes from trip-hop and the Bristol Sound to create something that's sure to strike a chord with old skool junglists.

Let's be clear, though. These are just some of the things “Diversified” has to offer. There are sixteen tracks here which, together, crystallise the multiple, complex layers of Tantrum Desire's take on bass-led electronic dance music in 2015. The joy for DJs, ravers and listeners alike is going to be discovering those layers for themselves. So go discover.

Since Document One stormed onto Technique's roster, this production duo have set about marking out their very own niche in the D&B spectrum. Songwriters' musicality and an appreciation for multiple genres, while still keeping focus firmly on the dancefloor, makes for a powerful combination. Now, with this latest release, they're back to consolidate their status and draw together some more threads in their ongoing multi-form musical narrative.

“I Got a Fever” wastes no time in laying out the formula. A swing-time low-end perforates smoky jazz club ambience, with loose percussion holding down the beat. The bass morphs between upright plucks and synthetic sweeps to neatly underline Document One's approach of providing a slick modern twist on foundation sounds. As the track builds, a vocal sample signals its time for the bass and drum to tighten up and drop into a cowbell-led funkstepping ride. This is summer music, as much about fun and partying with a smile on your face as it is about serious musicianship.

Then there's a whole different take on the summertime vibe for “Follow Me”. Ethereal vocals float over crisp and punchy drums, accompanied by long liquid bass tones, delicate trumpet and laid-back keys. It's a gentle soulful roller... But then it's suddenly not that at all. Document One puncture the atmosphere like a sharp intake of breath and kick us with a boot made from filthy bass. And now the light and floating sounds from before just serve to accentuate the heavyweight drive of the rave engine this tune has become. When the dancefloor needs a kickstart, here's one to draw for.

So, Document One have proved once again that they not only understand the palette of sounds and textures offered by jazz, funk and soul, but they're also willing and able to twist them into their own paradigm. They make music to make musicians nod in appreciation, but to make everyone else rave hard.

15 Years of Technique – Summer Selection Album

It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

Brimming with multi-genre experience, this team has come well-equipped with a fresh and clean production style, overt musicality and uncompromising levels of funk. This release reasserts their commitment to the dancefloor while showing off yet more colours from their palette.

“Run the Block” takes the tough but smoky sound that Document One has made their own and adds a layer of East Coast hip-hop flavour. The rap-along vocal, that trademark upright and synthetic bass fusion, the popping drums and live-instrument arrangement combine to make this tune a definitive statement of Document One's musical heritage. And of course, that means it has that jazzfunk dancefloor energy in abundance.

Then “Small Steps” flips the script, darkening things up in a way you might not be expecting from these guys. The intro is the sound of approaching menace, as military drums call the dance to order. An eerie dialogue sample ratchets up the tension, before a building kick pattern is deployed as a call-to-arms. Then the drop is all about those twisted tendrils of bass, snaking around techstep drums and ghost-in-the-machine stabs. This is what happens when musicality meets aggression on a hell-bent mission to mash up the rave.

So, as well as keeping a firm grip on their low-down dancefloor funking credentials, this release has proved that Document One have a love and talent for all sides of this music. As their track titles declare, they “Run the Block” in the funk neighbourhood and they're making “Small Steps” into the shadowy technoid realm. Now they've shown they can kill the dance in both, it's clear the Document One operation doesn't believe in boundaries.

The Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic  productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads, though, will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. So, which corners are explored on this EP?

Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard, dancefloor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick production science.

Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dancefloor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effects which makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.

You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dancefloor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible

The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

We've barely recovered from the sun-scorched assault of Technique's Summer 2016 album, and yet, already, there's more Drumsound & Bassline Smith material for us to get our ears around. Proving they've got too much fire for one label to contain, their recent excursions on Playaz and Function Records have been setting raves alight, and now they're back on their home turf. So, what have the Technique bosses cooked up for us this time?

First on the menu is “I'm Gone”. And this one isn't just a Tune with a capital T, it's also a Song with a capital S. Bully hasn't just provided a singalong hook, but a fully structured lyric which drives the track just as much as the relentless bassline. From the lighters-up intro through to the soar of the build to the solar-plexus strike of the drop, this is going to deliver everywhere from festival main stages to early-hours after-parties. No watering-down, no gentle chaser, just a neat shot of pure vocal drum and bass.

And then it's time to handle “The Truth”. The original hit hard when it dropped at the end of last year, but now Drumsound & Bassline Smith have unleashed the VIP and things have got even more serious. First of all, the intro has an extra level of cinematic sci-fi epicness, which perfectly sets us up for the additional brutality of the drop. The militantly staccato bass of the original is given a re-lick with more unpredictable twists and turns. This is one for selectors to pull out to ensure they keep the rave in the palm of their hand.

To put it simply, here are two dancefloor-wrecking heavyweight pieces from the ever-prolific DBS team. To put it even simpler, it's Drumsound & Bassline Smith, so what did you expect?

TECH 143 – Tantrum Desire – Repeat feat. Coppa (Document One Remix)

Tantrum Desire's 2015 debut album “Diversified” demonstrated the sheer range and depth of music that the TD studio was capable of delivering. With tunes as varied as the gigantic “I Need You Here”, the aggressively percussive “Pump” and the classically lo-fi “Back for Love”, this LP reflected almost every flavour that D&B has to offer.

The project isn't over yet, though. Now, we're being treated to a series of remixes to offer even more twists to the formula. For this instalment, the Document One boys have dissected and reconfigured the Coppa-laced “Repeat”.

The elements of this tune suit Document One's jazzfunk-hip-hop approach to D&B perfectly. A darkly atmospheric intro drops into Coppa's vocals backed by a subtle half-speed beat. We get a moment to get used to nodding our heads to this before things are twisted into hyper-rave-mode with synth-stabs signalling it's time to get set.

Then the grimy warp of the bassline hits, with Document One's signature popping drums and funk energy. Coppa's bars ride over the top, providing extra boosts of percussive energy to keep the dancefloor bubbling. And the old skool breakdown and big build into the second drop means that this is more than just a simple roller, it's got the weight and power to do serious damage in the rave.

This is only round two of the “Diversified” remix series, and already it's clear that there's way more to explore in the Tantrum Desire sound. And with the kind of talent that Technique have on the roster for relick duties, we should expect nothing but fireworks.

2015's “Diversified” album proved unequivocally that Tantrum Desire has a spectrum-spanning palette to draw from. What with the undercurrent of deep house influence running through the tracklist and the excursions through tech, jungle and old skool sounds, it's clear that TD refuse to be pinned down to one classification.

One of the tracks that made a huge impression across raves and airwaves was “Pump”, championed by some of the biggest DJs on the scene from the moment it surfaced. Now, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have stepped up to reconfigure it for this series of remixes. So, we already know it's going to be killing off dances for the second time around.

DBS stamp their signature on the track right from the first note. Cinematic horns sculpt the intro into an epic, hands-in-the-air moment. And then it's all about the build. Arpeggiation meets the eponymous FXed vocal sample with a stomping kick progression to leave us in no doubt an almighty drop is coming.

The original version matched sparse drums with percussive plucks of synth-bass to create an irresistible skankers workout. This remix takes the elements and rearranges them into expert energy-building format. Drumsound & Bassline Smith begin with that stripped-back trap-style bass and beat and proceed to add complexity every sixteen bars. As it shifts up through the gears, this track takes the dance's hype levels with it.

These “Diversified” remixes continue the story that the LP started. The initial tracks demonstrated the multiple facets of Tantrum Desire's sound and now, even more layers have been revealed. This is an array of tunes equipped for every selector's set-list.

After our anticipation was pushed to breaking point, it's finally here. Pieces of this album have been circulating for a while now, chalking up support from the likes of Radio 1's Friction, DC Breaks, Tantrum Desire, Crissy Criss, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and a whole host of other heavy hitters. And you wouldn't really expect anything less, given this artist's pedigree. He's been in the game since the late nineties, chalking up some hugely successful releases on some of the biggest labels in drum'n'bass. As a DJ, he's a regular fixture at huge shows in his native Slovakia and beyond. And, since signing exclusively to Technique in 2011, his position as one of the scene's top tier producers, able to flex engineering skill and musicianship in equal measure. So strap in. It's L Plus's debut LP and it's a monster.

The title track, “Hideout”, lays out the blueprint. Never quite predictable, the tune takes us on a quirky journey through unexpected chord patterns and structural experimentation, and that's just in the intro. Make no mistake, though, L Plus hasn't compromised on sheer rave-hyping ability either, the huge build-up is definitely warranted by the weight and power of the drop. And that trend continues. You'll probably already be familiar with cuts like “Creature Must Die” and “Avenger”, which strike that perfect balance between individuality and dancefloor energy.

And that's just the start of what the album has to offer. Take the warm nostalgia of “Battleground” for example. There's real depth of emotion in the classic-synth melodies, delivered in a way you won't have heard before. Then there's “Make You Feel”, a twisted and techy journey through rhythm programming, and the half-speed madness of “Get Ugly”. The one constant feature is that all of these tunes, however expressive or resistant to pigeon-holing, are built to make ravers move.

Of course, this wouldn't be a Technique Recordings album without some heavyweight collaborations. The mighty John B passes through on “Original 80's”, to push some synth-pop and electro flavours to the limit. Muffler joins in on the uncategorisable orchestra-meets-filth of “Cinematic”. Drumsound & Bassline Smith add their spin to the melody and griminess collision of “Jetpack”. Plus the rock-solid mic man Coppa graces “Lock to the Greatest” with his presence to add a whole new facet to the sound.

You'd better believe this just scratches the surface. We all know L Plus's productions have layers to uncover, so this album is going to bear repeated listening as well as heavy rotation in raves and across airwaves. When that's true of every single track on an LP, you know we've got something special on our hands. The anticipation was justified. Check it.

Without compromise, without fuss, the Document One boys have established themselves as certified production dons. They've managed to weave strands from soul, jazz, hip-hop, techno and funk together into something that's always just a bit unpredictable. Well, that's not quite true. The one thing you can predict with certainty is that, every time, they'll do some serious damage in the dance. And here's their new release to prove it.

“How Low Can You Get?” opens in a sci-fi landscape populated by sweeps of pad and distant shimmers of reverberating hits. As high-pressure swells of bass signal the approach of the drop, digital glitches in the high-end take us further into tech paranoia. How low can you get? Pretty damn low, as the stripped-back, kick-heavy beat supports the drop of weighty sub-shattering basslines. This is dark, insistent and powerful, playing at the borders of the DnB genre without ever sacrificing dancefloor vibes.

“Girl”, on the other hand, might just be Document One's deepest excursion into soul territory so far. An RnB vocal riff, surrounded by loose percussion and fragile keys that meld into pads, hints at where this track is headed. Make no mistake, though, along with the melodic elegance and that beautiful lighters-up breakdown, there's an undercurrent of energy. Expertly constructed surges of bass drive the track onwards under popping beats. This is fluid drum 'n' bass music for raves and airwaves alike.

Once again, Document One have shown their ability to combine production technique and musicality with the fundamental quest to get the party moving. The two tracks on this release are almost opposite in tone, night and day, tech and soul, but the fingerprints of Doc One are unmistakeable on both. It seems there's still a lot more genre-bending innovation left to come.

Since Document One's first release on Technique Recordings, they've formulated a particularly volatile compound of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and tech. And they've proven its effectiveness by chalking up enviable levels of radio airplay, DnB chart status, and rave destruction. Now, there's a brand new five-track EP to deliver another dose.

This time, Document One are exploring the darker side of their nature, guiding us into the shadows with the upright-bass-meets-murder-minded-rap of “Haunted Spaces”. The EP's title track builds through a sparse intro into a rhythmically-twisted drop. The punch and snap of kick and snare are coupled with a driving fusion of natural and synthetic basses. There's a heartbeat of dancefloor funk, but this is no laid-back, casual groove. It's a gritty, evil piece of music that sets the template for the rest of the release.

As we move through “Pulse” and “Newton”, we're taken deeper into the neuro side of Document One's sound. Epic sci-fi landscapes build into claustrophobic cyber-nightmares, populated by gritty basslines and metronomically savage beats. “Pulse” explores the call-and-response structure, giving us an intergalactic frequency-range war. “Newton” does things differently, focusing on laser-guided missile strikes of low-end to drive the track along. Here, these producers prove they can strip away the jazz and go for the pure dark tech flavour without sacrificing any of their dancefloor energy.

“Rudeboy Fashion” does something different again. Still, though, there's no lack of that wide cinematic space, even when the rap vocal motif rolls in. The ultra-clean drums that drop with pitch-bending and modulating basses give this a feeling of classic techsteppers but brought bang up to date. Here, Document One show that they're capable of exploring multiple sub-genres without losing the essence of their style.

To round off the EP, “Clergy” adds yet another twist to the tale. Reverberant pads and effects swirl around a restrained but rolling beat. Basslines morph and modulate in the low registers, while the emcee verse conjures night-shrouded imagery. This is a stripped-back production, with Document One combining just a few perfectly-constructed elements to create the vibe. Very dark, and a tune that discerning dancefloors are going to love.

This EP is set to reconfigure our expectations of Document One. It has their production fingerprints all over it, but presented in a different, more midnight-tinged, package. It just goes to show the artistry in their style, and it's clear these tracks are another milestone in the onwards-and-upwards Doc One progression.

When Tantrum Desire dropped the multi-dimensional “Diversified” LP in 2015, it seemed that we must have finally witnessed every facet of his sound. We'd seen the epic orchestration, the soulful depths, the gut-wrenching nastiness, and the straight up dance-bubblers. But then there were remixes, which took things even further. And now, somehow, there's a new EP which twists the TD style into yet more configurations, and this release gives us a glimpse.

“Ricochet” features the vocals of Laura Bayston, who last linked with Tantrum Desire on the big-room thunderclap of their track “Underground”. Once again, she delivers a soaring, emotive performance that draws us into the music over trip-hoppy atmospheric vibes and a hands-in-the-air chord sequence. And then, under-pinning it all, is a subtle arpeggio, which guides us through the harmonic changes and pulls us upwards until we're dropped into a sea of bass.

That bassline wraps around the tune enveloping it with warmth and power, while a typically-tough Tantrum Desire beat lays out the rhythm for the ravers. That arpeggio moves through the mix, taking us further on the journey into the sound, until extra layers of melody bring the vocal back around again. This is late night, float-away-on-a-cloud music, that will keep dancefloors deep in its thrall.

Bear in mind, this is just one track cut from Tantrum Desire's “Horizons” EP, but, even by itself, it leaves no doubt that we're listening to the product of assured mastery. To create the balance between banger and beauty is something not every producer is capable of, but it's intrinsic to the skyscraper-large TD sound. And you already know the rest of the EP will have even more to reveal.

The biggest drum 'n' bass event on Earth, bringing together tens of thousands of ravers and hundreds of artists over three days and nights, is Let it Roll. As if that wasn't insane enough, this August, the award winning Czech festival will be graced with a Technique Recordings Label Night. And, there's brand new music to mark the occasion properly. Opening proceedings is a VIP relick of a tune from Drumsound & Bassline Smith's massive 2017 album “Wardance”. This version of “Control” ramps up the energy from the first bar, with insistently percussive synths leading the way. Then the pulsing, stomping drop, driven by a bassline with an extra layer of grit, is sculpted for maximum rave destruction. “Vybez” delivers us into a trademark Tantrum Desire cinematic opening. Expansive pads stretch into the distance as subtle hints of drum edge towards us over the horizon. There's no way you're going to see the dark, scything drop coming, with a screwface bassline that screams out for a reload. Then Technique's latest recruits, No Concept, take to the stage. They've already proven capable of creating multiple styles, and with “Make Noize” they've built a monster. The long tension-ramping build supported by that “make some noise” sample writes a very big cheque, but the drop is more than capable of cashing it. The warping and twisting bassline, those gut-punch drums, and the adrenaline-shot fills combine into an absolute beast of a tune. Finally L Plus gives us “Let Roll the World”. Gigantic uplifting arpeggios set the tone in the intro. The “let it roll” dialogue clip adds an extra boost of hype. And then there's an almighty drop which rattles off a full polyrhythmic ammo belt. A syncopated pattern in the bass weaves in and out of switching percussion instruments while a rock-solid kick and snare provide the scaffolding that holds it all together. Even in this four-track mini-compilation, the strength and depth of production skill on show makes it very clear why Technique is such a revered label. And it also demonstrates exactly why their Label Night at Let it Roll in August is going to be unmissable.

Hailing from Bratislava in Slovakia, D&B producer L Plus has already  
forged an enviable career as a DJ and producer. Since signing  
exclusively to Technique Recordings in 2011, he’s been honing his  
unique sound, with releases like his “Time Travel” EP, “Catastrophe”,  
and remixes for scene luminaries like Crissy Criss and Tantrum Desire.
 
This style is evident in this release. The title track sets out L  
Plus’s blueprint straight away, with sweeping atmospherics cut with  
strong vocal hooks. The bass hits hard, but it’s the melody that  
drives the tune, evoking the early days of rave while maintaining  
precision-tooled production quality.
 
Next, “Taking Me Higher” moves even further into old skool euphoria.  
The beautiful vocal and filtered strings of the intro, swooping into a  
instant-classic riff, offer a perfect lighters-in-the-air moment.  
After an epic drop, L Plus twists things up with another of his  
trademarks, a half-speed breakdown allowing the harmonies he’s created  
to shine through.
 
As the name suggests, “Challenger” goes harder. L Plus is a master of  
atmosphere, and here he shows off this skill to build tension. His  
high-end patterns blend and contort until the drop, when he throws  
down a complex array of synth-work to send ravers crazy.
 
The last track, “Close To You”, takes us back in time again.  
Mid-nineties spacey sounds are held together with the eponymous vocal  
sample. Percussive stabs and building drums introduce the low-end  
which sparks the track into life, which L Plus balances with his  
customary melodic work.
 
This EP shows exactly what L Plus can do. He’s a true music producer,  
not a “beat-maker”, able to manipulate melodies and vocals as easily  
as he can twist up a bassline. Add this to his calling-card soaring  
atmospherics and it’s clear that these tracks are equally capable of  
blowing up dances and airwaves.

It's been clear for a while now that Tantrum Desire's name on a track makes it a download-on-sight proposition for discerning selectors. Now, back on his home turf of Technique Recordings, it's time to see what he's got for us next.

Up first is “Unleashed”. Discordant orchestral swirls and an incisive blade of bass surround us with shadows. But, then, a rolling, evolving drum pattern shows us the light at the end of tunnel, building to an elephantine drop. TD smacks us with an insistent pulse of low-end and aggressively stark beats. This is militant music aimed straight at the dancefloor, reconfiguring elements of jump up to maximise the hype levels. But, make no mistake, the weight in the bassline, the punch of the drums, and the clinically lethal production make this, above all, a Tantrum Desire tune.

“Twerk It” has a hint of that tension-building darkness in the intro, but Tantrum Desire has much more to show us. As chords and bass rise and fall, morphing between keys and moods, leading us to one of TD's signature huge builds, the tune becomes epically cinematic. And that's before it's even dropped. Then raw savagery of the bassline cuts through the atmosphere with ninja precision, and things get even more hectic from there. Some wickedly slick modulations and kidney-punch drums make this an essential weapon of dance destruction.

Tantrum Desire's got this down to a science. His tunes are consistently at the business end of the download charts because they consistently connect with ravers. And, judging by this release, that's not likely to change any time soon.

We're not even close to recovering from the sonic assault of Technique's twentieth-anniversary 'Remix LP' but the follow-up strike is already upon us. We've seen classics from the back cat get the treatment from the likes of A.M.C, Bladerunner, Marky and Digital, but now it's all about looking to the future. With ten brand new killer tunes, the Technique Recordings gang are already setting a benchmark for 2020.

And, judging by this album, the picture of what's to come is multi-hued and multi-faceted.

The break-focused future-jungle tear-out of Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Ruffneck Soldier' – already a tried and tested deejay weapon on dub – sits alongside the cinematic expanse of L Plus's 'The Planet' and the controlled aggression of NC-17 and Exile's 'War'.

As if to emphasise the variety, No Concept's Kerizma-laced 'Electrify' rubs shoulders with Tantrum Desire and Youngman's 'Precision', offering us a horror-influenced stomper and a soul-meets-staccato dancefloor workout respectively. And that's before we even get into the contribution from DJSS, 'Only Get Better', blending subtlety and savagery in equal measure.

This is Technique's 2020 vision, setting out a blueprint for the type of beat and bassline science that's going to be lighting up drum 'n' bass dancefloors over the coming months. Ukrainian drum and bass pioneer MaxNRG signed to Technique Recordings last year, and instantly proved his credentials to the UK scene. His debut EP, “Prometheus”, showed off a melodic sensibility that provides an ideal counterpoint to his tough beats and basslines, resulting in heavy radio and rave rotation. So, time to show off more of this flavour.

And that flavour, as MaxNRG has already proved, has a lot to do with melody, which is at the top of the agenda for “Hide Away My Heart”. A sing-along refrain and cleverly interweaving riffs create the calm before the firestorm of the drop. An, proving the flexibility of this style, on top of the D&B mix, there’s a selection of other delivery systems for the payload. A Radio Mix, an Instrumental Mix, a savage Dubstep Mix and even a electro-plosive House Mix, proving that, whatever your flavour, MaxNRG’s style can get you hyped.

This flavour’s all about melody, but that’s not the end of the story. “Danger Zone” flips the musicality into another dimension. Now, it’s deployed to create an unsettling horror-movie landscape, populated by tormented samples, before filtered beats and a gravelly bassline slowly move into view. On the face of it, this is a simple, if dark-hued roller, but as the tune progresses, sounds become modulated beyond your wildest expectations to draw you further into this paradigm.

output vital parts of any selector’s armoury.
