Dark side of techno

Adam Beyer invites the legendary DJ Rush to make his Drumcode debut, as the pair link for a stirring maiden collaboration, ‘Restore My Soul’.

The DC boss holds a deep respect for the iconic Chicago artist, the relationship stretching back 25+ years to their time touring the German techno circuit in the 90s. The title track builds dramatic tension via elastic synths that oscillate alongside Rush’s vocal, taking things to heady levels. ‘Control’ is a thick wedge of industrial-edged rhythms, with Rush’s famous vocal providing a commanding presence throughout. ‘Take Me There’ is stirring in composition, transitioning from crushing percussive loops to deep techno funk, before working towards a teased out crescendo as Rush’s hypnotic refrain echoes in the air. A deliciously pumping DJ Rush remix of ‘Restore My Soul’ rounds out the package.

Since years Steve K. is deeply connected as a DJ, now he gets the accolade by having his debut with our Lauter Unfug Musik No. 028. Being a nightowl by himself, this EP is called like this and includes two catchy originals, each with one stunning remix.

“Nightowl“ attracts with an intoxicating drive, which is caused by a dirty-low bassline and effective long-lasting sequences. When the notable voice begins, you’ll definitely know why getting captured can be a delightful feeling. Swiss-based Kellerkind chips in with the next remix on Lauter Unfug and thrives again. Adding a highly dramatic thrill on top of the shaking rhythm, plus a stirring tack on the synthbass, are the ultimate way to electrify the floor.

The „Inner Demon“ of Steve K. unwraps the slightly wobbling groove side. It’s a subtle and neat work. The resonating sounds and baffling elements are winding subconsciously into the minds and directly to the legs, as if it’s an endless dancer. Sascha Dive puts on one floor below in his remix - sprinkled with hushed cracklings. Wide open and highly intense, he creates a stimulating deepness which is right perfect for warm summer nights.

Mark Reeve makes his welcome return to the Drumcode fold with a powerful three-tracker ‘Far Away’.

In recent years Mark Reeve has become a pivotal member of the Drumcode crew. His 2015 EP ‘Run Back’ was a standout, before he backed it up strongly with ‘Nine of You’, his collaboration with Adam Beyer that featured on A-Sides Vol.5, ensuring his place in the hearts of DC fans. As further evidence of his importance to the collective, Beyer has selected him to suit up for the inaugural Drumcode Festival happening this August in association with Awakenings. 

Harking back to formative times in the ‘90s when he’d frequent Sven Väth’s legendary Omen in Frankfurt, the title track to Reeve’s ‘Far Away’ is a timeless beauty, driven by a celestial melody line and emotive bass notes that lobs it into the kind of laser-kissed territory that would make even the most jaded of raves throw their arms skyward. ‘Fragile’ follows, a classy bass-driven cut that makes its mark with deep subterranean stabs and punchy kicks. Rounding out the EP is ‘Redemption’ a tougher, heads-down techno workout imbued with plenty of energy thanks to a crafty bass melody that runs throughout.
