This trio is based on my quartet of a similar name. As is usually the case, when I return to a piece with a fresh ear, new possibilities present themselves. 

Almost always, I love the new version more. Generally, as in this case, the material has greater focus.

The original was based loosely on the first three bars of J. S. Bach's "Chaccone in D minor," which I know mostly from having spent years trying to teach my left hand to play Brahms' arrangement. It may be the most enjoyable to piece I have ever practiced. I performed it once... for a colleague's class... after suffering for a few minutes, she politely interrupted saying they had to get back to their lesson plan.🤣  (Well that's not the whole story... I had just played the entire solo version of "Rhapsody in Blue," which they liked well enough to want an encore... yes, hard to believe, I know.😊)

This version is much more closely involved with Bach's masterwork.
