“Dead eyes” are what you see when the spark of presence is gone, when the gaze becomes flat and unfeeling. They don’t track the world with curiosity, don’t soften with warmth, don’t betray the smallest flicker of life behind them. Instead, they look vacant, as if the person is only half-there—or not there at all.

Psychologists might call it dissociation, emotional numbness, or the drained look of depression. Trauma can hollow the eyes until they no longer shine, leaving only a glassy stare. Burnout, exhaustion, even despair can strip away the subtle movements we instinctively expect, making the gaze uncanny in its stillness.

What unsettles us is that eyes are supposed to reveal the soul. When they go lifeless, it feels as if something essential has slipped away. The body is alive, but the windows look out onto nothing. And that nothing stares back.
