Last year, New Jersey group OSSX wowed us with a mix of completely original material that blended infectious edits of Janet Jackson and September with tracks like "Split Wig"—one of last year's indisputable breakbeat anthems—that showed how the then-duo could bring together generations of American dance music into one compelling, vibrant mix that celebrates all shades of East Coast club.

Their RA Podcast might not be an all-originals mix, but it shares the same spirit. OSSX—now a trio, with Juke Bounce Werk member Elise joining original duo Equiss and Lektor Scopes—sprinkle the mix with more of their excellent unreleased originals, in-between canny and clever edits new and old, like DJ Sega's rework of Basement Jaxx's "Where Your Head At," which makes for an early highlight, along with DJ Swisha's Baltimore club edit of Robin S.'s "Luv 4 Luv" and the bouncy DJ Problem version of Mary J. Blige's classic "Family Affair." You can hear both the evolution and history of these genres through this mix, along with cuts that touch on UK garage, ballroom and jungle. Trust us when we say that this is over an hour of pure fun, showing the ingenuity and timelessness of American dance music through the decades.

A. I’ve been a part of the ny music scene since like 2017-18

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. This mix was recorded during a moment of pure disdain… for everything. So I titled it “pissed” originally. Pressed record bc I felt like I had no other options and I’m really happy with what came out. Found myself going back to my roots as a dj and blending it with my current style. I always used to pretend I was djing on my fav nyc radio stations as a youngin like la kalle 105.9, kiss fm 98.7, wbls 107.5, hot 97 and power 105 (when they had actual djs and not robots) and one radio station from gta 3 that blew me away, msx fm. hope u enjoy ……

Next in the series we welcome Zambian DJ and producer SHE Spells Doom.

SHE Spells Doom is an Electronic music project created by Zambian producer, Wamya Tembo. It draws inspiration from a number of his influences, such as: 80s Sci-Fi/Horror movies, (Congolese) Rhumba/Soukous, Gqom and early 2000s Rap production, which he mixes with House and Techno elements he picked up from time living in Geneva, Switzerland. His style can best be described as hazy but driving - usually seeking to create a visceral atmosphere without neglecting the dancefloor by combining trademark airy synth-lines with heavy drum programming. The past few years have seen him release work on labels such as Creme Records, Monstart, Sweat Equity, HTS, All Centre and Tresor. He has also dabbled in contemporary art projects - FELTWORLD, his art installation which was exhibited at BKhz Studio & Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa during a residency with the Fak'ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival in 2019 and in 2021 he scored "Nobody Is Okay" - a collaborative art installation between Swiss artist, Andy Storchenegger + Zambian poet/writer, Marita Banda - on show at Grosse Biennale 2021 and in 2022 at the National Art Gallery in Livingstone, Zambia.

For this mix, I tried to capture the frantic energy of the kind of week I was having when I made this mix. 
Felt a bit all over the place but mostly excited about a few changes coming up, musically + w/ life in general.
Expect lots of tempo switches, swooshes + rushing drums from some new favourites + artists who have inspired me/the S.S.D. project up till this point.

Since the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd, there have been renewed efforts to shine a light on dance music's roots in Black communities. Still, there's a critical need for more Black-forefronted collectives and programmers—as well as more thoughtfully curated and balanced rosters of talent in clubs and festivals—to keep the origins of electronic music alive. 

In comes Brooklyn’s dweller festival, founded in 2019 by Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, which aims to highlight exclusively Black talent from across the globe. This year’s edition featured a live RA Exchange with Nigerian-British selector OK Williams, who spoke to RA music critic Kiana Mickles about some of the deep-rooted inequities that continue to bar Black artists from contributing to the contemporary dance music landscape. They also discuss Williams’ ascent on the global stage—beginning from her Early Bird residency at NTS and full-fledged touring career post-pandemic—and her first forays into production.
