Dub wisdom and global fusion that hits like a brick landing on a featherbed; LIONS GATE “PORTAL” is a musical movement and a spiritual evolution. The group consists of 3 NYC based veteran multi-instrumentalist artists that answered a Universal call to create this powerful project during the opening of The Lions Gate Portal in 2021 at Highest Frequency.

Patrick Dougher, Yako 440 and Erik Rabasca applied the full force of their combined talents, taking us on a trip from London to Lagos and from Kingston to Motown. 11 tracks that drop heavy reggae, moody trip-hop, lava hot hi-life / afrobeat, smooth soulful funk and deep jazzy drum ‘n’ bass. All delivering a positive message and warm earthy for deep listeners and expressive dancers. 

LIONS GATE sound is rebellious and militant, raw and sophisticated. “PORTAL” is a mix of eclectic influences - imagine Fela Kuti, Funkadelic, Roots Radics and Portishead jamming at a Brooklyn house party.

LIONS GATE “PORTAL” is live instruments with electronic overdubs, expertly mixed by Alan Siegler at his analog studio Cardboard Alchemy in Brooklyn. Mastered by Eliyah Heinrich at Beyond Groove Studios in Zurich, Switzerland, and featuring horns by saxophonist Sean Nowell and trumpeter Dave Levy.

This week we have something special: MOTHER DUBBER dug deep into her record collection and brought us one hour of heavy-hitting, old-school dubstep. 100% vinyl, recorded live at our launch event two weeks ago.

Born in Geneva, Switzerland and long time member of the O.B.F Sound System’s DUBQUAKE family, Mother Dubber has been digging records since 2001 and considers her vinyl collection an anthropological archive. Her aim is to find parallels between the great precolonial African traditions and the postcolonial expressions of the diaspora –– starting from the West-African disco records inherited from her father, to the contemporary electronic music productions that dominated her childhood. 

A strong universal struggle and alliance can be heard through her musical curation; focusing on a particular era or region with every set. She however has a particular affinity and obsession with the 88-92 era, a period of true sonic innovation, which she ultimately attributes to the technological harmony of that period. According to her, the tools available during this time were both dialectically and simultaneously primitive and sophisticated enough to have enabled a futuristic sound, still interacting in close proximity to human intuition.
