Despite refusing to stick to a single genre, Deft is one of those immediately recognisable producers, which is nice because it means we don’t have to waste any time comparing him to anyone else. 2013 saw the Croydon man skilfully hopping from headphone to dance styles, often within a track, his signature blend of cinematic soundscapes and crisp, intricate percussion covering hip-hop, house, and ambient. What’s more, his noteworthy contributions to the burgeoning UK footwork scene means the young producer can now count Mark Pritchard, DJ Shadow and Rockwell among his biggest fans, and boy does this boy have fans, check this Bandcamp review of his Project Mooncircle EP Voight Kampff:

Emeralds opens with bubbling synths, building into epic space-station jungle juke with haunting toplines and heart-shaking bass. Cavernous electronic atmospheres introduce A Little Kiss, which interleaves percussion and stuttering bass with the incredible attention to detail we’ve come to know and love.

Octavia is a feisty younger sister to Loqux & Past, the Maya Jane Coles-championed hit from his Space Hardware EP; warm, headnod house joined by a SHOWER bass-line that roundhouse kicks its older sibling in the face for hogging the limelight. Maintaining the hyper vibes, Perky couples spiky footwork beats with slowly-evolving chords creating euphoric rises and falls, leading perfectly to the epic reflection of closing interlude On The Other Side.

All in all, Deft is an artist who continues to develop in awesome and interesting ways, increasingly able to balance striking dance music with immersive ambience. And finding his path with similarly ambitious labels like WotNot, there’s a not-too-distant future where Deft no longer worries that it’s always greener on the other side.

Continuing a strong line of afro inspired works, men like Pedestrian & Jasperdrum drop another scintillating technoid excursion on 2nd Drop. Deeper, moodier with dynamically carved esoteric angles, 'Origins' moves forward from the superb Kalakuta, the afrobeat meets bass music bomb supported by Giles Peterson, Scuba, Midland, Mr Scruff and many more, from last year, to deliver a heads down destroyer. Off kilter, wonky and expertly crafted, Pedestrian & Jasperdrum's ‘Origins’ is pure class, led by a host of syncopated percussion, haunting flute lines and distorted vocal samples, this is what Fela would have sounded like if he'd teamed up with Carl Craig in 2014! 

On the flip we welcome Alix Perez, best known for his DnB production, but widely talented as shown by his Arp101 outings on the likes of Eglo. Here, Alix takes the tools to Kalakuta, transforming the original's afrocentricity into a tense, punchy roller, dominated by a bass line that literally jumps in to your ears. Toss in a stabby synth line, rifle shot drums and plenty of bass with space, this a beautifully crafted refix. 

On the artwork, we’re really happy to welcome back the supremely talented Jimmy Turrell, a well-respected designer and illustrator who has worked with everyone from Fiat and Nike to The Guardian and Dazed & Confused. Asked once again to provide something inspired by a darker aspect of Afrocentricism, he came back with a strikingly bold image that evokes the essence of the music. In 2018 Jacques Greene released an hour long YouTube mixtape of unreleased music. The tape included the track 'Nordschleife' - released this year as an Adult Swim single. The music there was committed to an hour long limited tape sold on his bandcamp. The finished songs we're then released as the "Fever Focus" ep: a double vinyl ep sold in two parts. CID RIM has also had an incredible year, moving to London and writing numerous singles with collaborators. The first of which 'Control' came out in November and moved straight to 6Music A-List. He's continued touring. We released a double single of club tracks under the alias CD_RM, and he produced the entire Petite Noire album "Noir Wave". 

'Kids Return' was made in London in four hours. You can hear how vital and bold all the sounds are here. Something about the limitation of time can force some great results. The track is the title track of the series this year.
