Just one step beyond rag-tag
We sailed from Madeira
The sky couldn’t have been much clearer
And I made good friends that day
Manuel, Agusto, and Jose
They came from the Fortunate Island only to become Hawaiians
Cast off from the shore of the Macronesian Archipelago
Hey where’d he go?
Oh yeah don’t forget Jao
The four of them were cabinet men 
And they knew they couldn’t pretend
They didn’t need money
So they went where it’s sunny
With a hogshead of raw sugar
They became contract laborers
On a Hawaiian Plantation
But their love of music couldn’t be quenched on the ocean
They heard a legend says the people there would
It was a small little device made from a gourd and played real nice for King Kalakawa
If it was made from a gourd it wouldn’t be fit for a lord
So they drew up plans with their Portugese hands
They standardized for the king
A little device with four strings
And re-entrant tuning
Then one night out on the sea
The four of them they had the same dream about
“Roseabell,” a ballad that tells
Of a daughter, apparently, of the St. Claire family
Who was swooning
For the heir of Lord Lindsay 
Tall and handsome so they say
They decked their halls for a ball
At the family seat at Rosslyn
So against her family’s warning she sailed the Firth of Fourth
Turns out she drowned
The next day they compared their stories
They asked the captain about his forays
Captain Biggam said, “That ballad was so sad,”
He knew it from Sir Walter Scott
Who wrote the poem that has got the namesake of the boat
The castle of which he wrote
Ravensgrag was the name
Of the castle and the boat, one and the same
So they interpreted the dream as though it had seemed
Roseabell was the inspiration so they made a dedication
To her memory
But somehow the dedication got lost in the translation
When the islanders would see
They called it “The Dancing Flea”
When they arrived on the scene
“The gourd was Guam,” said the king
“We used no gourd (and) just one string!”
In Hawaii (they) called their’s the Ukeke
Guam called their’s the Bell-am-Bo-Tu-Yan
The One-string Belly Echo
The cabinet-makers-turned-sugar-laborers took instead the Taro Fiddle
The well-known Braghina, you know
Four strings of the Ragoo to the body of the Braghina they moved
They took the word, ‘Ukeke’ and blended it with ‘mele’
‘Ukeke’ meant Hawaiian string bow
‘Mele’ meant song, you know
It was fun to play
They called it the Ukulele!
