In the dying light of each day they gathered, the long shadows of the dojo scaffold casting darkness across the solemn faces of the keepers of their art. Each took his turn to tell a part of the story, handed through the generations by their masters. Components of a tale of the overwhelming horror of a past that others preferred to bury in myth. They spoke of a time when the coming of the night spelt death for those in the open blackness, with the pressing undead mass reaching from beyond the grave to extinguish the last embers of life, locked in a desperate struggle to crush the final beacon that sheltered the living. They spoke of he who blocked the crushing sea of extinction in the depths of each night, shielding the fragility of life with the perfection of his brutal and efficient form. The eyes of the living only greeted each new day because of the immortal techniques that had now been passed to them, the new guardians of the beacon, masters of an art now evolved – watching, waiting, perfecting their deadly art… ready for the return of those beyond death.

Following up the immensely successful Karate LP from core Eatbrain artist L 33, comes a deadly second approach to some of the most blinding tracks from the album - reimagined by a collection of apex predators in drum & bass. PROLIX delivers an exhilarating and forward-leaning groove with his take on CLUBLIFE, whilst JOE FORD percussive prowess and intricate and on-point production pushes DROP IT DOWN LOW into dynamic and fresh realms. The freshest name on Eatbrain - SYNERGY deliver their justice to RAZOR BLADE, with its twisted and rough sound whilst NEONLIGHT unravel a paranoia-inducing and edgy take on title track KARATE. The valley was a lush place, with flora and fauna of all types contained between its mountainous peaks. This way it had been for ages untold, and those who lived there wanted for not in their idyllic existence. Untouched they were by the world, hidden away in a pocket of paradise unknown to all others. Indeed, theirs was a blessed existence, but such gifts were a treasure that could not go unnoticed by all. On that fateful day, a shadow had passed the sun, and it was in the duration of this mid-day’s night that from high upon the mountain a thunderous roar did erupt. On a cold frigid wind came a new beast to the valley, with scales that glittered white as fresh fallen snow. Reptilian as it seemed, upon vermillion wings did it soar, and from its breath came the fury of deep winter’s hoar. It withered the forests that those who lived there called home, and those caught in its wake were frozen to the bone. Not even stone could stand against the great being’s wrath, and reduced to foundations were all buildings in its path. From within these ruins it plundered an invaluable hoard, taking the treasure of the valley’s great lord. With one final roar the beast then took to the skies, returning to the mountain from whence it came on high. Down below lay the valley, its inhabitants frozen firm, in fear under the shadow of that great ICY WYRM.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN to debut his latest EP, which follows in the destructive wake of his Dust Devil EP on the label as well as further recent releases on labels including Neuropunk Records & C4C Recordings. Filled to the brim with the producer’s characteristic ferocious tones, the EP features a set of four tracks surging with serpentine basslines and deviously distorted sonics as MIZO leads the latest onslaught of the EATBRAIN horde from atop the eponymous ICY WYRM.

The name Burr Oak should already be very familiar to Trendkill Records’ most ardent followers. The emergent drum and bass supergroup, formed of Toulouse producers Opsen and The Clamps, burst onto the scene last year, striking listeners with their intense, no-holds-barred approach to neurofunk. Drawing on their ever-innovative sound design skills and prolific work rate, the two Frenchmen crafted a whopping four releases for the Prolix-helmed label last year and have since guested on Eatbrain and Cause4Concern in 2020. Now celebrating a homecoming of sorts, October finds the pair returning to Trendkill for the Polar Lows EP, which features a seismic alliance with Austrian duo TR Tactics. 

Showcasing their production prowess, the individual contributions from each member of Burr Oak shine through over the course of the three-track project. As a former member of the innovative trio Signs, well-known for their halftime contributions to labels like Noisia’s Division, Opsen audibly leaves his mark on opener and title track “Polar Lows”, which utilises flourishes of snarling, hip-hop inspired breakbeats before searing synths launch it into a riotous climax. Meanwhile, some of the blistering basslines on show throughout the EP are well-aligned with The Clamps’ signature sound, the sum of the two’s contributions making for phenomenal results. 

Add Trendkill labelmates TR Tactics into the mix on “Washoku” and expect a four-way collaboration of epic proportions, deploying both heavyweight synth work and fleeting, atmospheric pauses. Rounding off the EP is the brooding, progressive “Intelligent Suicide”. Introduced with melancholy ambiances and subdued stabs before hurtling towards a gritty, mechanical crescendo garnished with whirring feedback and drilling basses, the song makes for one of the pair’s most intriguing creations to date, serving as a firm reminder that these two titans of the neuro scene have plenty more tricks up their sleeves.
