I've tried remixing this song a few times this year - here's the version I really love. J.J Cale's been a huge influence on my music, my parents would play his albums 'Troubadour' and 'Really' on repeat when I was growing up so this is a tribute to him.

I’ve struggled with putting words to my music since I started producing, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do but could never follow through on. I started to push myself to write more last year and Back For More was the first song that I really wanted to get out to the world.

Here we go - this is 'Don't Want It' my second vocal release, this song came together late last year over a couple of days playing around in the studio with Beni Giles, a hugely talented multi instrumentalist/ producer/ wizard.

Sometimes when I’m sample digging I’ll listen to the first few seconds of a track and simultaneously hear the new song I want to create out of it - Back To The Start was definitely one of those moments. It would be funny for you to hear the demo I made in that first evening! Most of the song and the ‘Back To The Start’ hook were there but then it was just spending the next few weeks crafting it and then, painstakingly reworking the sample. 

If I’m connecting to a song idea a few lyrics or melodies will come straight away, then I’ll live with the beat and think through what ideas are associated with the words, I might drive with it playing or go for a walk with some headphones through a park in London or back at home in Cornwall. I had a brief conversation with the artist Alyss late last year and she gave me the advice that those first melodies/ words are the song and you need to keep hold of them and build them up. 

When I was going over ‘Back To The Start’ I was thinking about the times in a relationship when you pine after the ‘honeymoon’ stage where everything seems simple and you never argue over anything. It’s easy to slip past potential conflicts in those early stages, you’re both learning about each other and neither of you want to reveal yourself fully and risk creating a divide. Once I have a concept like that for a song the words are easier to find.

Back To The Start

Hey there, 

I hope you enjoy the last song in the 'Back For More' EP!

This track came together late summer 2018, Mathilda came down for a session and I played her a few songs, she chose a beat with really stripped back drums and bass line. It’s always interesting to see other artists workflow, she nailed most of the vocals first take and worked her way through writing the song super fast.

After she left the studio I was left with these tight finished vocals paired with basically just two elements: drums and bass. I spent the next couple days writing the sax lines, keys and guitar to pair with the vocals - I ended up with these lush warm tones that pull away into the original stark bass and drum chorus, at the time I remember having St Germain ‘Mary L’ on repeat which I think nails those moody harmonics you can get from building up layers of reverb drenched guitars and keys.
