Released on August 10th via Viper Recordings comes the second single from The Prototypes hotly anticipated debut LP, ‘City of Gold'.

Fully embracing a summer sound with the A-side ‘Don’t Let Me Go’, the production and DJ duo smoothly combine old school style piano chords, signature energized drums and the pulse-racing vocals of Amy Pearson. Already receiving nationwide radio support, the single package also includes a sultry house remix from the talented Jade Blue and an electro-fuelled "Big Top" dancefloor rework by The Prototypes themselves.

The B-side stays true to The Prototypes heavy hitting, galactic-inspired sound, with the whirring ‘Humanoid’. Exciting and rhythmical use of synth patterns alongside vocal interjections make this the ideal follow up to the hugely popular 'Pale Blue Dot'.

The Prototypes have worked their magic again with this release, combining the euphoric house elements of 'Don’t Let Me Go' with their trademark pumping bass lines and weighty drops in 'Humanoid'. It’s another great prelude to the arrival of their album and will feature heavily on dancefloors across the globe this summer.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. Since Document One stormed onto Technique's roster, this production duo have set about marking out their very own niche in the D&B spectrum. Songwriters' musicality and an appreciation for multiple genres, while still keeping focus firmly on the dancefloor, makes for a powerful combination. Now, with this latest release, they're back to consolidate their status and draw together some more threads in their ongoing multi-form musical narrative.

“I Got a Fever” wastes no time in laying out the formula. A swing-time low-end perforates smoky jazz club ambience, with loose percussion holding down the beat. The bass morphs between upright plucks and synthetic sweeps to neatly underline Document One's approach of providing a slick modern twist on foundation sounds. As the track builds, a vocal sample signals its time for the bass and drum to tighten up and drop into a cowbell-led funkstepping ride. This is summer music, as much about fun and partying with a smile on your face as it is about serious musicianship.

Then there's a whole different take on the summertime vibe for “Follow Me”. Ethereal vocals float over crisp and punchy drums, accompanied by long liquid bass tones, delicate trumpet and laid-back keys. It's a gentle soulful roller... But then it's suddenly not that at all. Document One puncture the atmosphere like a sharp intake of breath and kick us with a boot made from filthy bass. And now the light and floating sounds from before just serve to accentuate the heavyweight drive of the rave engine this tune has become. When the dancefloor needs a kickstart, here's one to draw for.

So, Document One have proved once again that they not only understand the palette of sounds and textures offered by jazz, funk and soul, but they're also willing and able to twist them into their own paradigm. They make music to make musicians nod in appreciation, but to make everyone else rave hard.

To the casual observer, the Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads, though, will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. So, which corners are explored on this EP?

Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard dance floor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick production science.

Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dance floor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effects which makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.

Next up, Anarchist appropriates the tropes of nineties hip-hop-influenced jump-up to give the sound a modernist renaissance. Rather than using a rap sample, Rhymestar is enlisted to provide the lyrical punch. His bars roll out over the half-time intro, and then peppered throughout as vocoded motifs to confirm that old skool vibe. There’s nothing old skool about the production levels, though, as the icicle-sharp drums and honey-and-lemon bassline drive the rave onwards.

You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.

If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dance dance floor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible.

If you’re a full-on DnB purist you might not be aware of the major movements Youngman’s been making. I mean, you’re probably aware of his history of collaborating with artists like Skream, NVOY and Wilkinson, but there’s a lot more to know. As well as being a top tier vocalist, MC and host for our bass-heavy scene, he’s also a highly respected songwriter across genres, chalking up, among many others, credits on Britney Spears’ album. So, given those levels of versatility, this release comes loaded with high expectation.

And, with heavyweight support alredy garnered from the likes of Friction on Radio 1 and DJ Hype on Kiss FM, it’s clear those expectations have been met, in a definitive fashion.

We don’t see many cover versions in drum ‘n’ bass, so taking on a classic UK garage vocal and reworking it for 2017 is a bold move. One that pays off, though. As soon as your recognise the lyrics from Monsta Boy’s original, it’s going to put a smile on your face. It’s got that bittersweet tinge of nostalgia, plus given an extra twist of flavour from Youngman’s subtle yet dextrous performance.

Then we have the drop, delivering rolling beats, delicate piano chords, and punchy low end to keep the dancefloor vibing. There’s a confident restraint in the stripped-back production which gives the vocals room to build and drive the track onwards. This has got all the makings of a tune that’s going to hit raves and airwaves hard.

So, the quality’s obvious, even before your find out that it’s Drumsound & Bassline Smith on production with added composition from Studio 19. There were bound to be fireworks.

With all his other projects on the go, it’s a rare treat to get a new slice of Youngman DnB. Here, with this departure from the norm, he demonstrated not just how versatile he is as an artist, but how versatile the genre is as a whole. Expect to hear this tune everywhere.
