Raised in Winchester VA, Teena May began her music journey at age 4, on a toy piano then on classical piano lessons until age 13, where she started playing classical flute until graduation. Before leaving for her studies at George Mason University, a family friend gave her a modest acoustic guitar and from there she was hooked. 

Her songwriting began in her dorm room, then playing open mics around Washington DC cafes. After graduating college Teena May moved to Los Angeles booking gigs at Silverlake and Echo Park venues off and on for six years. 

Teena May moved to New York City in 2012, playing shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan while building her extensive folk, country, pop and Americana songwriting catalogue.

In September 2021 Teena May left New York City and moved to New Orleans LA where she performs with her drummer Adam Coolsaet.  She also splits her time between New Orleans and Nashville for showcases, co-writes and other various songwriting work.
