IALING / BIG J is a Taiwanese American DJ/producer, interdisciplinary artist and founder of jjjjjjjj. Currently based in Brooklyn, JIALING was born and raised in Baltimore as a classical cellist. They spent several years living abroad in Asia, Australia and the Middle East before returning to New York. They are part of collectives AYI AYI (Brooklyn) and WOE (Baltimore) and have monthly residencies on London’s Balamii and San Francisco’s Hyde FM.
With a series of self-releases under their belt, BIG J’s contribution to our 2-track singles series brings the sounds of East Coast club to our roster. ‘babies’ combines an addictive vocal sample with Bmore breaks, 808 percs and of course the infamous Jersey bed squeak. ‘work this mtf’ transitions from club to warehouse, with techno inspired drum programming. Nonetheless, the playfulness of BIG J’s sampling shines through once again.

TAIPAN TRAX PRESENTS: TT001
Taipan Trax is proud to finally present the first physical release of the label: TT001.
Founded in 2021 by Leeds-based producer Phasmid, Taipan Trax has always sought
to get up and comers heard, championing dark, impactful productions with an
unsettling edge from across the world. As the label hits 50 tracks released to date,
TT001 is a timely showcase of the distinct, bass-led sound of Taipan, with label
regulars and new artists alike drawing upon multiple genres to form this
long-awaited four track VA.
Opening the A side is Australian producer DJ Sunroof. Having previously graced
imprints such as Break ‘N’ Pieces, Extra Spicy, and Finespun Recordings with his
unmistakable sound, his contribution to the release - ‘No Style’ - is a masterful
fusion of UKG and breaks, exploring ethereal pads and eerie vocal work to thick,
warped basslines.
A2 comes courtesy of label founder Phasmid, continuing his steady supply of
no-nonsense breaks-focussed club tracks. ‘Double Negative’ sees abrupt vocal
chops and textured drum patterns collide to create a driving breakbeat number that
begins with stripped-back bass weight, before opening out into a more spacious and
darkly melodic second half.
Kicking off the B side with brute force is Bristol-based K-65. Having garnered a
fierce reputation for his razor sharp electro-breaks, K-65 has pulled out all the stops
with ‘Kingpin’. Wielding piercing industrial bass and slick percussion, this track
makes its mark early doors, moving swiftly into a blistering 4x4 second drop.
The finale of TT001 comes from the notorious Oldboy. Needing little introduction,
Oldboy’s productions have made a major imprint upon the scene in recent years.
Whilst usually dealing in dark and deadly 2 step and 140, Oldboy steps up the tempo
here with ‘Scrap’ which, as the title suggests, is a gritty foray into the realm of
jungle/dnb - with signature Taipan bass.
TT001 will be available to order physically and digitally from the Taipan Trax
Bandcamp from July 14th. Preorders up June 9th.

[PREMIERE] K-65 - Kingpin [TT001]

New Delhi-based producer @mutablemercury brings his first EP, Lost In Chaos, to Scuffed Recordings.

Mutable Mercury is the solo project from Mukul Juneja, who first appeared on London-based label Scuffed in 2022 with his single Vexation.

Now returning with a three-track EP, ‘Lost in Chaos’ sees Mutable Mercury further building on the sound he has been developing on his past releases with labels like Reality Club and Shubzin - leaning heavily on electro, techno and dubstep influences with a heavy focus on percussion and bass weight.

Opening with the title track, Mutable Mercury establishes his sonic palette from the outset, with driving, high-energy drum work alongside staccato vocal chops.
